'Airbags have never been deployed according to carfax history. I was commuting home, waiting at a stop light, when I heard a very loud pop. At first, I thought something had fallen on to my car because the dash did not explode. Reveraling the airbag. I started to smell smoke coming from the passenger side and noticed that the airbag light was on. I wasn't able to start the car given the battery safety terminal disengaged. I am lucky that the driver side airbag didn't deploy, or even deploy while I was driving.

Driver side low beam headlight quit working when ignition was turned on. Headlight was working fine when the vehicle was parked. Blown light indicator on instrument cluster appeared. When changing out the light I discovered all the wires inside the headlight enclosure were damaged due to heat. All of the wires insulation was dry rotted , sections of the insulation broken off of the wires and shorted out together. I have many years of vehicle wiring troubleshooting and design. The wires in the headlights do not have the appropriate jacket rating for the headlight location where they were installed by BMW. I believe the heat from the headlights dried out and made the wire jacket brittle. After investigation of the left headlight housing both headlights require the internal harness of each headlight to be replaced due to heat and dry rot. The shorting of the wires only blew my headlight bulb and not the fuse in the system. This could be the reason for the other persons complained about their headlights turning on and off while driving. If left unchecked this could cause other problems in the cars electrical system and be dangerous if the lights shorted out during a night drive.

BMW Z4 2007 - steering wheel pulls hard to the right. when corrected pulls hard to the left and vice-versa. I've taken the vehicle in 5 times in the last year to 3 different certified mechanics thinking it has to do with the alignment but the issue IS not resolved. I have been advised by a private certified mechanic that this IS likely due to a steering column defect, for which the 2003-2005 BMW Z4'S were recalled. the vehicle IS difficult to control and dangerous to drive at any speed over 40 mph. the local dealership completed another alignment last week, IS not acknowledging the steering problem and claims that the vehicle IS ok. I am now dealing with customer relations at bmw-usa but no action for assistance with this factory defect will be considered until the local dealership's service department acknowledges the problem and quotes the repair. I have lost confidence in the vehicle and at his point the it sits in my driveway because it IS unsafe and dangerous on the road.

A tractor trailer hit my car, a BMW Z4 convertible, ct license plate, in the rear left, as I was moving slowly with traffic just before the overpass, right before I hit the tappanzee bridge as I was heading to nj on friday, august 1ST, 2014, sometime between 11:50-1230pm. I believe it was close or about 12:20pm.my head slammed violently against the top of the wheel from the impact.i looked back after being hit and the driver agreed to pull over when there was room for him after going over the bridge to exchange insurance information. I wrote down his license plate , it was tennessee u514217.i believe the # of the truck was 5318. The driver was a white male, about 40-45year of age.after I sped in front, I pulled over just over the bridge to the right where construction was taking place and I waited for the truck to pull in behind me. The trucker pulled up to the left of my car while he was still in the first lane, and he was moving at a snail's pace; his window was rolled down and he stared me in the face, curled his right hand into a fist, put it up to his neck, raised his right thumb, and dragged his right hand across his neck as if to say he'd cut my throat. He then yelled, "i got somewhere to be! Do you want me to drive back up here after we exchange personal information, come to where you live, and cut your throat!" he had driven past me.i hesitated. I didn't know what to do. , I got a cat scan and had my head wound looked at, and was diagnosed with a severe bruise to the head and received treatment for anxiety I was feeling from the accident and the hit and run threat. A month has passed and I am still feeling anxiety over this; not to mention my car has been damaged.i am looking to find the driver who hit my car and caused me the wound and constant anxiety I now suffer. *tr

Low battery situation over the winter caused the vehicle to slip into "transport mode" where the ac, defroster, and fan speed will not work. this creates a hazardous visibility situation due to the defroster not working. as I understand it, the transport mode IS supposed to be disabled when the car IS delivered to the us but some dealers mistakenly turn it off rather than disable it. to disable it you must return it to the dealer and pay for a high service visit for a few moments of programming. *tr

I've lost control of my steering in grave circumstances and the wheel sticks, where it reaches a point where I cannot control the vehicle whatsoever. The vehicle barely has 47,000 miles on it. While driving 30mph last fall, the steering wheel began to stick and I could not steer the vehicle. I had to apply a great deal of force to get the steering to respond. There IS a continous clicking, almost like a "clunk" sound, from the steering column and the steering simply does not respond well and I feel extremely unsafe. The local BMW dealer says that the entire steering column will need to be replaced, which will cost me over $3,000. I parked the car for winter and recently pulled it back out and the problem continues to persist. *tr

While driving straight, the steering wheel tends to stick, force IS needed to steer to the left or right or to even keep it going straight. Once you start turning it seems to feel normal until you start to move the wheel back to the neutral position, then you realize the wheel IS now stuck in this position. It usually takes quite a tug to get it moving again! it appears to be getting more extreme and requiring more force to move the wheel. I have owned the car for about 2 1/2 years and have always thought it steered a little different, I just figured it was a BMW thing and it being a smaller car that was causing it to handle this way!! I don't think that any more! *tr

• 10182619Discharged Battery Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed: The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle "discharged battery" complaints. In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time in the workshop, it is very important that the diagnostic test plans are performed to completion, with all results taken into consideration. Without performing the energy diagnosis test plan, the root cause of the discharged battery cannot be identified. This increases the chances of a repeat repair.

The ""Service Engine Soon"" (MIL) lamp is illuminated and engine power reduction is perceived. This situation can occur after driving for some time with the engine at full operating temperature. If the ignition is cycled, the engine then usually performs normally. The following faults are stored in the DME: * 2A82 VANOS intake - stiff; jammed mechanically * 2A87 VANOS exhaust - stiff; jammed mechanically * 130108 VANOS intake: control fault, position not reached * 130308 VANOS exhaust: control fault, position not reached For the N54 engine, the following secondary faults may also be stored: * 120408 Charge-air pressure control, cut-out: Boost pressure accumulation blocked * 3100 Boost-pressure control, deactivation - boost-pressure buildup prohibited CAUSE The VANOS faults can be caused by an insufficient oil pressure supply to the inlet VANOS adjustment unit. To effectively move the camshafts to the target positions in the specified time and under all engine conditions, sufficient oil pressure supply to the VANOS control pistons must always be available. If engine operation requires the VANOS system to quickly advance or retard the intake or exhaust camshaft, faults may be stored if the camshaft is ""late"", or does not reach the target position. In this situation, engine power may be reduced and a check control message is displayed. The consequential fault 3100 or 120408 can also be set in the DME fault memory as well."

• 10150160State Inspection and Emission (I/M) Test Fails Due To an Invalid VIN Number. The customer of an affected vehicle may fail to pass an I/M test due to a non-compliant 17digit vehicle identification number (VIN) stored in the DME (Digital Motor Electronic). The VIN read out and displayed on the state test printout does not match the actual VIN of the vehicle. If the DME was reprogrammed using the previously available BMW service equipment (e.g., Progman, GT1), it is possible that only the last 7 digits of the VIN were entered into the DME, and positions 4 through10 may only contain default characters. For example: The state I/M tester or OBD scan tool may read out WBAAA00000A123456 instead of the correct full 17-digit VIN, WBAZZ03492A123456.

• 10148273Check Control Messages Related to Battery Charge During Cold Ambient Temperatures. On cold days with an outside ambient temperature of less than 15F, customers may notice a check control message related to the battery that is displayed on the instrument cluster and the control information display. Under these conditions, the vehicle starts. Various power management faults can be stored: * 213901 - Power management: Reduction or shutdown of individual electrical consumer * 8040BD - Reset or deactivation of Terminal 30F * 8040B9 - De-activation of terminal 30B: Top start capability limit reached * 8020E8 - Reset or deactivation of terminal 30F * 800E89 - FRM: start capability limit reached with lights active during stationary mode * 93076B - Deactivation of terminal 30B: upper start capability limit reached * 93076A - Deactivation of terminal 15: upper start capability limit reached, but deactivation preventer active * 93076C - Deactivation of terminal 30B: upper start capability limit reached, but deactivation preventer or legal loads active * 930769 - Deactivation of terminal 15: upper start capability limit reached Note: When the outside temperatures drop below 46F, the charging system is switch to full charge. CAUSE * The check control message (ID 229) is caused by a heavily discharged battery. * The check control message is triggered when the current state of charge (SoC) of the battery approaches the minimum SoC that is required to start the vehicle (start capability limit). * In low outside ambient temperatures, the start capability limit of the vehicle is higher. Therefore it takes more energy from the battery to start a cold engine. * Without the early warning of the check control message, the current state of charge would drop below the start capability limit and the vehicle would not start. * The vehicle's intelligent power management system actively takes measures to increase the charge of the battery, such as increasing idle speed and reducing or shutting
• 10148179Diagnosis of Compound Brake System Complaints in M Vehicles. INFORMATION 1. Visible cracks are caused by high thermal stresses during rapid heating and cooling of the brake discs. Braking from high speed with cold brake components (less than 212 degrees F) increases the likelihood of cracks to form. These surface hairline cracks are usually spread over the entire brake disc friction area, and have no negative influence on the durability or braking performance. The rotors should not be replaced only for their appearance reasons. When performing routine service on the brake system (pad replacement due to wear), the brake discs should be replaced if surface cracks are found to be greater than 13 mm, or if the brake disc thickness is below the minimum thickness. Always replace brake discs in pairs (per axle). Install new brake pads when replacing discs. By doing this, the service life of the friction pad surface is increased, and an even material loss is ensured. 2. Vibrations and/or steering wheel torsional vibrations during braking are caused by applying the brakes on discs with minimal to heavy corrosion. These vibrations are most noticeable when braking from high speeds with cold brake components (less than 212 degrees F), and will diminish with normal everyday operation. Parts replacement is not required. 3. After high brake loads, running noises can be heard when applying the brakes, and may also be heard to a limited extent after the brakes are released. (See the note in the Owner's Manual). These noises are reduced during normal everyday operation, due to further erosion of the brake pad friction lining. Visible surface cracks or craterlike recesses on the brake pad surface are caused by a minor difference in the material of the pad lining, which will decrease with further operation and should not be replaced due to their appearance.

• 10148087External Engine Oil Leaks and Repairs. During the vehicle's operational life, normal engine oil seepage or sweating, in addition to accumulated road dust, dirt and grime in the engine compartment can cause the appearance of a more severe oil leak. This is further exaggerated by residual oil that remains on the engine assembly after maintenance services are performed, e.g., oil filter changes, "engine oil top-offs," etc. If this visual appearance of accumulated oil on the engine assembly as an "active leak" is misinterpreted, unnecessary gasket repairs/replacements will result. Specifically, our analysis of the claim-related data for vehicles equipped with the engines noted in this bulletin is showing an above-average number of engine gasket repair/replacement claim submissions. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide your workshop with information and a procedure that will help in identifying engine oils leaks that do and do not require a repair.
