The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent dealer and the contact was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The contact did not believe that the diagnostic result was not relative to the failure. Additionally, the contact stated that there were rust spots underneath the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 134,000.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated during the failure. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drove the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer performed a diagnostic test but was unable to retrieve a fault code. The contact also stated that while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to stay in the lane with the assistance of the police and other drivers for approximately 10 minutes before restarting the vehicle and resuming normal functionality. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.
The frame and suspension has overly corroded. The frame is falling apart so bad that when I shut the driver's door chunks of metal fall to the ground. I've had it assessed and they say it should not be this bad. Even in Michigan
I went to have an oil change and when the garage went to lift the truck the frame buckled. There was so much rust damage that the frame was soft in numerous places. The 1999 silverado Z71 1500 truck IS an LT with only 104,000 miles. It has been garaged since I purchased it new. It looks and runs great! The brake lines rusted out 10 years ago and I replaced with stainless steel lines.
Brake lines have rusted through. first the rear brake line burst. a few months later a front line burst. both times vehicle was in motion.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 800 (1500). While the contact was pulling into a parking spot, the anti-lock brakes seized abruptly and the vehicle almost struck a tree. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic); however, the contact did not remember being notified. The failure was similar to the symptoms listed in the recall. The contact called the manufacturer and a case number was provided. No further assistance was offered. Jeff barnes chevrolet (6110 sykesville rd, eldersburg, md 21784, (410) 970-6363) made an appointment for the recall repair promptly. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Fuel leaking from attach point of fuel crossover tube and passenger side fuel rail.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact heard an abnormal knocking noise while starting the vehicle. In addition, the driver and passenger side plastic rollers were fractured and caused the seats to move. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 142,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 70 mph, the driver's seat slid on the track and caused the contact to bump into the steering wheel and dashboard area with force. An unknown dealer diagnosed that the seat rail needed to be replaced due to the plastic seat holders fracturing under the driver's seat. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin and failure mileage were not available.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. While the vehicle was parked, the contact attempted to accelerate and lost the ability to steer the vehicle. The bolts that held the gear box to the frame had been sheared off. The dealer (cooper chevrolet buick, 1300 s quintard ave, anniston, al 36201, (256) 405-4155) stated that the bolts looked like they were torqued too tightly. The dealer and manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 230,000. *Tt updated 12/07/18*jb
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 15 mph, the transmission malfunctioned and the vehicle would not properly accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the local independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission components in first gear were shattered and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Also, brake fluid was leaking from the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the brake lines were rusted and corroded. The brake lines were replaced and the failure was remedied. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 100,000.
Passlock system engages without cause. When starting my truck, it acts like it will and then shuts down after a second, and then the security light comes on. This IS common with past lock system errors. This happens about 1 out of 4 starts. To get the car started, I have to go through a reset process that takes over 30 min, which causes battery drain. This has left myself and family members stranded in unsafe situations several times. Most recently I was stuck on the side of the highway, after stopping to change a flat at 11PM. After not starting with these same symtoms, while trying to do the 30min. Relearn process, the battery did not have enough to start the truck. So I was then stuck there for 3 more hours waiting on a tow truck for a jump. I was stranded for over 3 1/2 hours. this issue has been happening for the last 2 years, and have spent about 4K dollars to try and fix it.
TL* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 (gmt800). While the vehicle was stationary, an abnormal odor was detected inside the cabin. The contact attempted to open the hood, but the latch failed to release the hood. Also, flames were seen underneath the hood. The contact believed the fire originated from the fuse box, which burned the engine wire harness. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. A police report was filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not destroyed. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was unknown.
Brake lines rusted and broke. This caused a loss of braking ability and a near accident. Brake line materials used were inferior and this presents a safety risk for all owners. gm should replace all registered vehicles with stainless steel lines.
The frame broke right over the rear end. . I seen the bed of the truck was not lining up with the cab one day.
Anti-lock brake failure employs when not needed and at low speeds in motion .very dangerous !!! !!!
The full size spare tire that IS mounted under the rear of vehicle fell off into traffic while making a slow turn, on a flat, smooth concrete city street at 4 mph.the tiny cable that holds the wheel rusted completely through. This IS a deadly hazard! Someone will get killed by this flaw eventually
Complete brake failure. Steel lines rusted and burst. On side street, slowing down to stop before entering the highway on down hill location. Stepped on brakes, line failed, just missed rear ending vehicle in front of me, was able to shift in reverse and get stopped before entering highway.
The frame rail on the left side IS broken in 2 places under the cab area. the frame broke while driving. Now the cab sags 1 in lower where the cab meets the box. body lines no longer match up. there IS no reason a 18 yr old truck with a mint condition body and only driven approx 17500 km per year should break the way it did. This perfectly good step side truck IS now useless and completely unsafe to drive.
Brake lines rusted out causing me to be in an accident in motion
Frame and it's crossmembers rusted out. Frame has holes and cracks. Will undoubdtedly fail completely (break) if use IS continued. Seems to be a common problem with this and other similar models.
Metallic brake lines rusted out. Complete loss of brakes.fortunately I was in my driveway getting ready to leave & heard a slight popping noise & lost ability to stop. Got out & brake fluid all over driveway..unable to add photos, truck was towed to service station immediately afterwards
Had to have all the brake lines replaced. the lines burst due to them all being rusted out and corroded. I have a 1994 toyota pick up truck with more miles than my 1999 chevy silverado and the brake lines are not rusted or corroded go figure! I was approaching a traffic light and when I applied the brakes, the brake peddle went all the way down to the floor. I pulled over and looked under the truck and saw a puddle of brake fluid on the ground underneath the drivers door and gas tank. I had the vehicle towed to the local chevrolet dealer and all the brake lines were replaced for $1066.33. I was charge for 8 hours of labor. I am pissed off and will never buy another chevrolet vehicle, because of their use of substandard material on the most important part (brakes) of their vehicles and their failing to acknowledge & correct this serious problem with these model year trucks when it was brought to their attention, instead they made bogus excuses as to why these brake lines were failing! I have purchase nine chevrolet vehicles in my life and like I stated earlier I will never buy another chevrolet again and will discourage everyone I know that IS in the market to purchase a vehicle to not buy a chevrolet because, the way chevrolet failed to resolve the brake line problem with these trucks IS unacceptable!
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. A total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi IS aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis IS closed. For additional information, see the attached closing report.
Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part IS also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake IS intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear IS caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. Odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.
