The contact owns a 2022 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that the rear passenger's side brake light was intermittently inoperable. The dealer was contacted and provided an estimate for the repair. In addition, the contact stated that several warning lights and messages, including "Air Bag Malfunction", "Adaptive Cruise Control Problem", "Collision Mitigation Braking System Problem", "Road Departure Mitigation Problem", and "Auto High Beam Problem", were displayed upon starting the vehicle and while driving, followed by a loud dinging sound. The dealer was contacted for a battery replacement estimate. The dealer provided an estimate but informed the contact that a diagnostic test was required prior to any repairs. The contact believed that deactivating the Auto START/STOP system might have caused the battery failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure might be associated with the short lifespan of the battery. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000.
I am the original owner of a 2023 Honda Pilot with only 17,500 miles. I brought the car to an auto repair facility for its annual New York State inspection. My trusted mechanic discovered that there was a problem with the “rack and Pinion” steering assembly it and could not pass inspection. This problem also ruined the two front tires. He called a local Honda service center to inquire about the problem and check on outstanding recalls. He was told that this was a known problem, but there has not been a recall yet. I have since searched online and found many references to the steering assembly issue in 2023 Hondas. Recalls have been announced for other Honda models. Since there was not a recall yet I had to pay over $4,600 to get this repaired. That is a great deal of money to repair a four year old car with low mileage. I contacted Honda customer service to try to resolve this issue and get reimbursed. I was told since there has not been a recall yet I can’t get reimbursed. Honda is aware of but is not attempting to correct the issue. In particular, since the car could not pass inspection I believe this model is unsafe to drive without these repairs but Honda is not issuing a recall to ensure these vehicles remain safe when on our roads.
We purchased a 2022 Honda Pilot Sport brand new. In 2024, it began shaking while slowing down. Hennessy Honda blamed worn tires. We replaced all four by 2025; the shaking briefly improved but returned. Hennessy then diagnosed bad control arms. On [XXX] at approximately 97,000 miles, an independent mechanic instantly identified a broken steering rack. He demonstrated that both front wheels had excessive play and could move independently when manually checked. He warned that this could cause loss of steering control or a catastrophic accident and told us to stop driving immediately. He considered the failure abnormal for the vehicle’s age/mileage and indicative of a defective component. Authorized dealer Ed Voyles Honda confirmed excessive internal play and a clacking noise inside the steering rack. It also identified an axle/half-shaft concern. Repairs are estimated at $5,274.54. Both an independent mechanic and authorized Honda dealer confirmed the problem. The vehicle remains unrepaired to this day. American Honda opened a case and received the diagnostic findings, but no corporate representative has physically inspected the vehicle. Police and insurance representatives have not inspected it because no collision occurred. The first symptom was shaking while decelerating in 2024. Collision-avoidance and driver-assistance sensor warnings began to appear at the beginning of 2026 while the problem was occurring. No warning specifically identified the steering rack before the independent inspection. This unstable steering system severely endangered our family of seven and other motorists, especially at highway speeds. We unknowingly continued driving after two incorrect diagnoses. We have now been without our only vehicle for more than 1.5 months, with no loaner offered. There needs to be a resolution for us and an official public recall for 2022 Honda Pilot steering racks in addition to the recall for 2023-2024 Pilot vehicles. My 2022 Honda Pilot has experienced a serious safety malfunction involving its Idle Stop system. When the vehicle stopped and Idle Stop activated, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into Neutral and would not allow me to shift back into Drive. I had to turn the vehicle completely off and restart it before I could drive again. This left the vehicle temporarily unable to move in traffic. Since XXX, the vehicle has required five replacement batteries, three installed by Honda dealerships and two elsewhere. In XXX, Honda sent us a letter titled "PGM-FI Idle Stop Software Update" and "Warranty Extension: Engine Does Not Auto Restart After Entering Auto Idle Stop." The notice referenced Honda Service Bulletins 23-008, 23-009, and 23-010. During our most recent visit to Honda of [XXX], the dealership diagnosed a failed battery and charged us $634 for replacement parts and labor. When we picked up the vehicle, we specifically asked whether Honda's PGM-FI software update had been performed. The service representative stated that the update was unnecessary because diagnostic testing did not identify the issue. We have not received confirmation that the software update was completed. I am concerned that the underlying cause of this malfunction has not been identified and that the vehicle could unexpectedly become unable to move in traffic again. I request that NHTSA investigate this potential safety defect. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The issue occurred on 9-15-2026. The engine started making a very noticeable knocking sound, (obviously a rod knock). We immediately parked the vehicle until it could be towed to a Honda dealer. The dealership confirmed it was rod knock, and suggested we put a new short block engine in. Thankfully I noticed before the rod was thrown because if it was it could cause a fire, or cause loss of control due to damage to the power breaks, and power steering. The dealership confirmed it was the connecting rod bearings, and they confirmed there were oil shavings in the oil pan. I have saved all of the paperwork. I tried to work with Honda to have the repair covered because they just had a class action lawsuit filed that covered this exact issue on 2016-2020 models, and they refused even though this vehicle uses the same engine that the 2016’s-2020’s used.
My front camera has stopped working and displaying six warnings. It is available for inspection. 3 of the warnings are a definite issue. The collision mitigation system is not working. Road departure mitigation system is not working and the lane keeping assist system is not working. The other one that are not working are Auto high-beam is not working and the Adaptive cruise control is not working. Also the brake system light stays on. The problem was confirmed by a independent service center. Has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance reps or others. There was no warnings at all. In the morning everything was work fine. When leaving work started my vehicle and all these warnings popped up and has came in ever since. It's been an issue since August 2026.
The contact owns a 2022 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH and attempting to overtake a slower-moving vehicle, the vehicle unintendedly decelerated to 30 MPH. The failure was a recurring failure. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
The car stopped in the middle of the high traffic highway in IL while driving to the airport on [XXX].The car failed to restart on few restart try. Vehicle was put on emergency flashing light and turned off / turned on. it would not start. The break / clause was stiff. We turned off the vehicle completely for few min and then restarted. The vehicle started. it was the scariest thing ever happened. as we were 5 member in the car and the situation was very risky, prone to accident and death. This has happened to me 5 times in the last month or so. It is a safety situation and is scary when it happens. The Idle Stop feature is malfunctioning and could cause me to be rear ended. When I am waiting to turn right at a red light, or waiting for someone to turn at a yellow blinking light, the Idle Feature isn't working properly. Sometimes the entire car actually turns off, the car goes into Neutral, and the dash board shows a crash detection or battery image. This is a safety hazard because in a right turn lane, when I am waiting for the cars before me to go, and then they do go, the people behind me are expecting me to go. Instead, I have to put on my flashers, put my car in park, AND THEN restart my car, then put it in Drive. It is not the usual Idle Stop happening; this is different; the car is actually shutting off and going into neutral and has to be put in park and then completely turned on. It goes into an accessory mode feel. I have a 2022 Honda Pilot Touring.
Multiple dashboard warnings appeared simultaneously and deactivating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Auto High Beam, Blind Spot Information, and Brake System warning. While on cruise control vehicle tends to slam brakes with no reason and nothing in front - major safety issue for driver.
My vehicle continues to stall when coming to a stop which is a huge safety concern. Please reference service bulletin 23-010 which is exactly my problem as well. Local Honda dealership and Honda directly confirm this is my problem. However since my VIN range wasnt reported to you they will not cover the repair cost. Can you please investigate and include my VIN on the bulletin or create a new investigation.
My 2022 Honda Pilot SE recently alerted me to multiple system failures in the Honda Sensing features including Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Warning and Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control. These errors were due to a failing front facing camera mounted by the rearview mirror. There is currently a class action lawsuit for this specific issue with more information here: [XXX] I believe that these Honda Sensing features are heavily marketed as part of the safety systems that Honda has installed and need to be covered by an extended warranty as the camera failure causes multiple systems to be cancelled or inoperable. After Automatic Braking engaged, within a couple days car will make a zipper noise and gas pedal will not work. Have to press it 5-6 times and then it will start working again. Very dangerous when you have cars traveling behind you and you basically start slowing down immediately. But today, not sure if related, backed out of driveway on a slope, car went immediately to park with a large sound like the bottom falling out of the car and shook the car. Several warnings kept flashing (emissions, transmission, and P for park was flashing). I powered car off and back on was able put in N to let it coast backward to get out of the road. Completely shut everything off waited a couple minutes and was able to drive it back to my driveway and there was fluid leaking from underneath halfway between the front to tires. Calling dealership tomorrow
The car has auto idle. It is the default and operates anytime the car is started unless you specifically push a button (each time) to turn if off. Starting about a year ago, the car battery seemed sluggish and then when I was driving if I stopped at a stoplight, the car would completely die and I had to restart it. Thinking it was a battery issue, I had a new battery put in on 10/15/25. But the issues have continued. Just recently, the car has twice died when I am at busy stoplights which could have easily led to me being rear ended. I have to put the car in park and attempt to restart it. It sometimes reads that the battery is dead, but then will start after a couple tries. I am taking it to my Honda dealer today, but they have already said "it's probably the battery - which is less than a year old and has a four year warranty.
Unknown. I took it to a local shop and they did read the codes but were unable to find camera or fix anything. I have 5 warnings that all came on one after one. Can not be cleared. We reset battery and a few simple fixes that didn’t work. Following warnings: Auto high beam problem, lane keeping assist problem, road departure mitigation system problem, adaptive cruise control problem, and collision mitigation system problem. I was driving on a smooth road with no issues and nothing happened, they just started going off one at a time. We have an appointment with Honda dealer on Tuesday September 29th 2026 to drop off to get checked out. I took it to my local shop on 9/24/26 with in an hour of it happening. Picked my car up from That shop on 9/25/26 they checked it out and said it was safe to drive but not something they could fix for me. I called Honda 9/25/26 that morning after picking up my car and they gave me the appointment.
I just parked my car in my driveway and after an hour, i went back to drive but my car wont start at all. No power and cannot start . This happened twice i was in a restaurant and when i went back to my car, it wont start and no power. The first time it happened when i went to the restaurant and i towed my car to the service center and they told me It was a glitch . The 2nd time it happened they could not figure out and so they asked help from honda tech line and recommending to do a dashboard tear down to check the wire harness on my own expense. Very frustrating .
Severe metallic engine knock, metal debris found in drained oil pan by Perfection Honda, pre-intake DTC codes P2651, and active dashboard alert ("Emissions System Problem"). Safety Hazard: Sudden engine stalling/seizure and loss of power steering/braking assistance at highway speeds.
I noticed up and down motion that seemed like a rotor problem. I had them look at the rotors and breaks. It was not them. They balance the tires and that didn't fix it. I asked them to do a NVH test to find where the vibration was coming from they told me they would do it and kept my car for the weekend. Monday rolls around and they tell me they won't do it. I was able to find a NVH app which you will see in the results attached. They still refused to do the test. By government and honda policy they are required to have this equipment. They just refuse to do it because this it is sitting in my driveway accruing non repair time because its not safe or mechanically sound. I still have 13000 miles left on my 5 yr 60000 mile warranty
I was driving and the Idle Start Stop was ON and when stopped, the Idle stop system turn OFF my vehicule it went to NEUTRAL when I took my foot out of the pedal the car didn’t want to turn ON again and I was in the middle of the ROAD and almost someone hit me. This issue has happened before multiple time.
My 2022 Honda Pilot began experiencing this problem in approximately November 2025. Since then, the vehicle has repeatedly displayed multiple safety-system warnings simultaneously, including Adaptive Cruise Control Problem, Lane Keeping Assist Problem, Road Departure Mitigation System Problem, Collision Mitigation System Problem, and Auto High-Beam Problem. The ACC and LKAS warning indicators also illuminate. The problem is persistent but intermittent. Approximately 95% of the time the warnings and system problems are present. On rare occasions, approximately 5% of the time, the warnings temporarily clear and the systems appear to operate normally, but the problem returns. I took the vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership for diagnosis. The dealer documented DTC U3000-49 and diagnosed an “internal failure of the multipurpose camera.” The dealer recommended replacement of the camera followed by camera aiming/calibration. The quoted repair cost was $2,105 plus tax. The repair has not yet been completed because I have not been able to afford the cost of the repair. As a result, I have continued driving the vehicle with these safety systems unavailable most of the time. The failure of the multipurpose camera affects multiple Honda Sensing driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems at the same time. I consider this a significant safety concern because it affects systems intended to assist with collision mitigation/braking, maintaining lane position, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and other driver-assistance functions. The simultaneous loss of these systems may increase the risk of a crash, particularly because the malfunction is intermittent and the systems can temporarily return to normal operation before failing again. The malfunction has been confirmed by an authorized Honda dealership and is documented on the dealer repair order. The vehicle and component are available for inspection upon request.
Engine fails to restart after stopping at stop lights or stop signs when AUTO START STOP feature is engaged. My safety as well as others pasenger was drivers safety was at risk since incidents occured on busy exit ramps in Dallas, TX and Southlake Texas. The problem has only been verbally confirmed by the dealer and Honda Corporate that it is a know defect and will only be handled as an extended warranty.
The unit was purchased in june 2022. All care maintenance completed by an authorized honda dealer. brought to honda of [xxx] on xxx due to camera electronic failure. unit has 34, 162 miles log in. Dtc u3000-49: system indicates camera electronic failure. Recommendation is to replace it. estimated repair out the door is $2,301.60. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2022 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving 56 MPH, the sunroof exploded without impact. There were no other vehicles nearby. The sunroof visor was closed. The dealer was contacted, and a voicemail was recorded. The service representative called back and informed the contact that there was no warranty on the vehicle for the repair. The dealer referred the contact to a body shop. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was 57,200.
My vehicle is equipped with Honda's Auto Idle Stop system. While driving, the vehicle has chronically suffered from a slow crank symptom. On two occasions, after coming to a complete stop at an intersection and the engine shutting off automatically, the vehicle completely failed to auto-restart when required, taking considerable time to restart and enter Drive. No warning lights or error codes were displayed on the dashboard during or leading up to or after these failures. One of these auto-restart failures occurred in active traffic and nearly resulted in a crash. I mentioned the slow start/crank to the dealer on several occasions (before the "no restarts" occurred); they were dismissive of the issue, stating that "All pilots with Auto Idle Stop feature do this. I've gotten to the point where I try to disable the feature everytime I get in the car but don't always remember. The vehicle remains a safety risk to myself and other drivers on the road. I would love a method of shutting this feature off perminently as to not have to disable it every time I get in the car or accidentally forget!
My pilot is suffering from the known safety defect where the engine stalls and force shifts into neutral during Auto Idle Stop. The dealership advisor handed me Service bulletin 23-010 admitting my vehicle matches the exact failure criteria. However, they are refusing to cover the failed starter motor under the warranty extension, even though Honda’s own technical documents state that the starter failure is a direct consequence of the low cranking torque and the tight engine valves. I need a corporate case manager to open an urgent case and issue a goodwill authorization to cover the starter the 23-010 valve adjustment. We have purchased 8 Hondas in the last 15 years, service has been a main reason for our return but after the experience today I’m not sure we can continue. The problem is a hazard.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On June 3, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE22005 after the agency received VOQs and several field reports concerning the Auto Idle Stop (AIS) feature on 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles. The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. Additionally, Honda extended the warranty coverage to 10 years with unlimited mileage for vehicles requiring the second stage component replacement. ODI continues to receive complaints of the AIS failure to restart, with many complainants alleging the campaign countermeasures had been completed.NHTSA has reviewed Honda's Information Request Letter responses involving warranty claims, lawsuits, and consumer complaints in addition to ODI's own data. This Engineering Analysis is being opened to further consider the potential safety defect, including gathering additional data regarding Honda’s service campaign efficacy. ODI is additionally expanding the scope to encompass all vehicles addressed in Honda’s service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009 as well as newer model year vehicles, which are substantially similar to the vehicles covered by the service campaign. To review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
