The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 10 mph, the vehicle lost motive power without warning and there was smoke coming from the engine. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed that the top cylinder was faulty. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer, but the dealer informed the contact that they did not repair vehicles older than 2006 and would only order a part to cover the manifold. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The Vin was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 02V104000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis. The failure mileage was 145,333.
The stock seat belts located in the rear seat of the vehicle do not lock in order to properly and safely install child safety seats. This IS not a one time thing as they will not secure after being fully extended. I have already contacted a dealer after finding an old recall but was told they would not fix as they didn't know what I was speaking of.
Cpsc: purchased a set of the above pistons to replace pistons on a 2001 jeep cherokee sport. The first set failed on the second opening causing minor vehicle damage to the lift gate. The locking clip did not have sufficient strength to hold onto the provided bracket. *Dt *js
Gas tank IS dangerous, just like recall ive seen. Cover has rusted away skid plate gone exposing gas tank
As with many other jeep owners with the 4.0 engine (hundreds that I have seen) my 2001 jeep cherokee's cylinder head cracked. Mine was at 117K miles, and the average mileage for failure seems to be 100K - 120K miles. This IS a definite design flaw. My jeep was well maintained and should not have had a cracked cylinder head. I ask nhtsa to contact current owners of jeep 4.0 engines to really see how often this fault occurs. Chrysler seems to take no responsibility for this, which IS why I am asking the nhtsa to investigate.
In the 2000 and 2001 cherokees with the 4.0 engine head casting 0331 chrysler knew about the cylinder heads cracking. In 2002 they contracted with tupy manufacturing in brazil to remake the head casting that ran until the 4.0 was stopped being used by them. Mine has since cracked and chrysler says that no factory recall was done and such I'm stuck with a cracked head that they knew was faulty.
Takata recall-- I had an accident january 7, 2016, I hit a pole. The airbags did not deploy. I did a search and I found out there was a recall on this jeep. I only had liability insurance. I got in touch with the company they had the car towed to a dealership and supposedly had it checked out but I don't believe it. I myself and my girlfriend was injured and under doctors care. My car IS tore up in the front. Why? Those airbags did not deploy. They could not tell me. I was traveling on rte 49 east.

One day, it just stopped working in the middle of the street, on my way from work. This incident occurred twice. I only had the car for a year and couldn't understand why this happened. I called jeep customer service who explained that it may have been an issue with the key. The next day, my vehicle completely stopped working. I had it towed and taken to the dealership where it was diagnosed to have an issue with the tipm. I had to pay money I shouldn't have had to spend to get it fixed. I later discovered so many other complaints about this issue. There's a very recent, august 2014, lawsuit pending in federal court relating to this issue. *tr
Slowly loosing antifreeze, antifreeze mixed with oil. found to be cracked head, apparently a common issue with this vehicle. Replaced head. a few months after replacement of head, started to loose antifreeze again replaced head again in nov 2014. Had vehicle back for one week, lost all antifreeze, mixed with oil again. Have been told that 2000 and 2001 jeep cherokees and grand cherokees have a very high rate of this happening. there should be a recall. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 2001 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that the air bag indicator illuminated. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
After loosing coolant at about a 1/2 per week, finally decided to pull the head and check to see if it has the famous jeep 4.0L, 0331 head casting and IS known to be weak. Yep, I have the bad head with cracks. There should be a recall for this as it has a high failure rate..... *tr
I have two jeep grand cherokees and have had nothing but problems with both involving the rear tail/brake lights. I have replaced the bulbs on and off for the last 10 years and last year I replace the entire light housing. I am experiencing this with both vehicles and have notice many other jeeps on the road with their tail light or brake lights not properly working. this IS an ongoing problem. The tail lights work sometimes but the brake lights may not work at all, very frustrating. when there have been times when the tail lights will work and the brake light will not, both using the same bulb. this IS a very dangerous situation when applying the breaks and having the lights on the rear of my vehicle not indicate that I am stopping or in fact making my vehicle less noticeable. I have heard there are numerous complaints for this same problem. I am having the same problem with both vehicles - not a coincident but a manufactures defeat. *js

TL* the contact owns 2001 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the drivers side brake light failed to work when the headlights were turned on. the failure was not diagnosed by the dealer. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 176,000.

Car will not start on the first try, and when I did get it running the check engine light was on. Took it to a mechanic when we started the car the engine light was out and when he put the tester on it pulled no codes and no monitors. said they had all been erased. I have had the car stall on my when sitting still, the chime works intermittently when you put the key in the ignition, the head lights will sometime stay on and sometimes turn off rightaway when you shut the car off. *tr
Driver's seat lh seat base frame cracked through and broken. Drivers seat became a "rocking chair" with potential to lose control of vehicle.
No incident yet, just wanting to know when I will receive my recall letter to take to a dealership to get the frame mount hitch to protect my family and gas tank from a rear end crash? *tr
I bought my 2001 jeep cherokee sport last year feb 2012 and multiple issues have been occurring. 3 months into ownership the electrical and fuel systems either stopped working or gave me constant issues (all parts factory). Now im bringing my car back into the shop because the windows wont roll down (again), the evap solenoid IS leaking and misfires. The carfax IS clean with no accidents and I baby this car. Jeeps are cheaply made and not meant to last past 100,000 even after services. *tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
ODI has completed an extensive analysis of rear crash fuel tank system integrity data for the subject Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles (SVs).As of June 2013, ODI knew of 56 post-collision fatal fires, 28 non-fatal fires, and 6 fuel leak incidents (totaling 90 incidents, 75 fatalities and 58 injuries) involving the SVs.Based on this analysis, ODI issued a Recall Request Letter (RRL) on June 3, 2013 requesting that Chrysler recall the Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles due to the rate of fatal, non-fatal fire, and fuel leak incidents when compared to peer vehicles (compact and medium SUVs) built during the same time period. In the RRL, ODI described how the location of the aft-mounted fuel tank made the SVs vulnerable to rear impact crash fuel tank failures.During the analysis, besides the high speed/high severity crashes present in both the SV and peer vehicles, ODI observed a significant number of low and moderate speed rear impact crash related fires and leaks, particularly in the Liberty. The data also demonstrated that SVs originally equipped with towing hitch receivers (trailer hitches) appeared to be under-represented in rear-impact related fuel tank failures. In the RRL, ODI requested that Chrysler provide its response by June 18, 2013, otherwise NHTSA might proceed to an Initial Decision that the SVs contain a safety-related defect.Chrysler responded to the RRL on June 4, 2013 and vigorously disputed the tentative findings of the RRL.Among other things, Chrysler argued that the SVs had an overall safety record superior to their peers, met or exceeded all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) and only experienced fires in severe high energy rear impacts.Nonetheless, while continuing to maintain that the SVs did not contain a safety-related defect, Chrysler proposed a recall (13V-252) of approximately 2.5M (1.6M currently registered) model year (MY) 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and MY 2002-2007 Liberty (KJ) vehicles on June 18, 2013.The recall remedy submitted by Chrysler would employ a hitch receiver assembly consisting of a steel cross-member behind the fuel tank with forward-projecting arms bolted to the frame rails on either side of the fuel tank. For the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee, Chrysler indicated it would conduct a customer satisfaction campaign and inspect vehicles equipped with aftermarket tow hitch receivers, and if necessary, replace any such hitch receivers whose conditionmay increase the risk of fuel system failure in rear crashes.Examination of the available data established that the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee did not pose the same magnitude of safety risk as the MY 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee and MY 2002-2007 Liberty, particularly in low and moderate speed rear impacts.Because the agency has concluded that the vehicles do not present an unreasonable risk to safety, ODI is closing its investigation of the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee.Although it was not within the scope of the Petition initiating this investigation or the Preliminary Evaluation preceding this EA, ODI also examined the performance of the MY 1993 - 2001 Cherokee as part of this investigation.NHTSA's assessment of the available data for the Cherokee did not establish an unreasonable risk in comparison to peer vehicles.ODI does not approve proposed defect remedies. While offering to install hitch receiver assemblies on the MY 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Liberty, Chrysler did not, in ODI's view, provide enough evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed remedy in rear impacts. The Complete Summary for this Closing Resume (EA12-005) can be seen by
