Risk
The sudden loss of power steering assist and hydraulic steering fluid leaking onto the roadway may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2017 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. These vehicles may be missing spot welds on the front side wall, connecting the door portal to the hinge reinforcements in the A-pillar area, possibly affecting vehicle strength in a crash.

If the missing welds affect body strength, there may be an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and Sprinter 3500 vehicles, equipped with folding seats (sales code S20). The unloaded vehicle weight (UVW) label on these incomplete vehicles may be incorrect.
Risk and remedy
Risk
The incorrect UVW label can result in final stage manufacturers exceeding the maximum vehicle weight once the vehicle is completed. A vehicle that exceeds its maximum weight has an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the UVW label and inspect the vehicle to make sure that it is not overloaded, free of charge. The recall began on April 3, 2018. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267.

In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

Midwest will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fire extinguisher with a different brand, free of charge. The recall began on December 11, 2017. Risk and remedy
Risk
If the spare tire holder is not properly secured, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners and dealers will lift the spare tire holder completely and tighten the securing screws as necessary, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact DVUSA custom service at 1-854-888-3214.

The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the mileage was 41,000. It was later discovered upon diagnosis that the mileage was 95,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed knock sensor, debris in the EGR valve, insufficient Selective Catalytic Reduction(SCR), and low DEF. The contact was informed that the knock sensor and the SCR converter needed to be replaced, and the EGR valve needed to be cleaned. The vehicle ws not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 equipped with Kumho Tires, Tire Line: Road Venture TR, Tire Size: LT245/75/R16, DOT Number: H211YD5F1717. The contact stated that while he was cleaning the vehicle, he noticed that the front tires had pieces of tire rubber around the tire and that the tread was delaminating. The contact inspected the rear tires and noticed that there was premature tire wear on the tread of both tires. The contact called the tire manufacturer who directed him to take the vehicle to an independent tire dealer for diagnostic testing where it was confirmed that the tires were undergoing premature wear. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate vehicle failure mileage was 18,000 and the tire failure mileage was 18,000.

The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle experienced a loss of motive power, brakes, power steering, and engine functionality. The vehicle was pulled over and restarted and functioned as designed however, the failure recurred. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine wiring harness replaced. The dealer reported that the harness showed signs of abrasions which caused the harness to ground out leading to loss of power. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.

Every 400 0R so miles the check engine light comes on. Codes are 19de00h and p16cc00 and p18f100 relating to the def burn. I have stopped at three mb dealerships. They look at code and reset system and tell me to drive the vehicle. They also have sent several people letters to request they have the vehicles for two weeks to study the problem. I can't do that.

I have to add a new clamp to fix the issue. Im so surprised to learn that mb have done nothing to fix that issue on all sprinter van... Its a "time bomb" to happen 7 could seriously have a deadly consequence in an emergency losing your power steering

The vehicle was taken to mercedes-benz of pembroke pines (14199 pines blvd, pembroke, fl 33027, (954) 644-5033) where it was diagnosed that the transmission sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10.

The crosswind assist IS not working. Because of the high profile on this van, it becomes very dangerous in windy conditions. We almost got blown out of the freeway because of this feature not working on our 2017 van. I took it to the dealer and they can not duplicate the issue. TL* the contact owns a 2017 mercedes-benz sprinter 2500. While driving various speeds, a rattling noise was heard inside the cargo area. Also, during extreme heat, the passenger side would warp. The vehicle was taken to mercedes-benz of temecula (40910 temecula center dr., temecula, ca 92591, (951) 216-7800) where no failure was found and the contact was informed that the vehicle was designed in that manner. The vehicle was then taken to mercedes-benz of long beach (2300 e spring st, signal hill, ca 90755, (562) 372-2707) where the contact was informed that the vehicle needed to be insulated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure several times and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact back to the dealer. The contact also filed a complaint with the federal trade commission and was informed of a pending recall in regards to the vehicle structure. The approximate failure mileage was 80. *Tt consumer stated the bumper was damaged and replaced when the truck was delivered in the dark. The cargo floor was defective 2 florrs were ordered. While driving slowly (10mph), roughly straight, on a gravel road, the power steering suddenly failed. I was able to steer, but steering effort was very high. The lower hose connected to the cooler for the power steering fluid had fallen off and all the fluid had been expelled. I could see no reason for this to have happened. The clamp was still connected to the hose. There was no evidence of anything hitting the hose. There was no evidence of damage to the hose. I re-attached the hose. I drove to the nearest auto-parts store (~ 70 miles, mixed gravel and pavement) and refilled the power steering fluid. I continued to check the hose frequently. I found that driving slowly (10-15 mph) on gravel roads, the hose works lose and has to be pushed back on every 10 miles or so. I think there IS constant risk of sudden loss of power steering. Sudden loss of power steering in a corner with a heavy vehicle like this could be catastrophic. the two images below show the connections to the cooler for the power steering fluid before and after a section of gravel road that IS about 10 miles long. The road was driven at about 10 mph. The recommended speed for this road IS 25 mph. The lower hose in these images IS the hose in question. In the second image notice that the clamp IS on the flare. From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced.In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators.It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by Daimler Vans USA, LLC (Daimler) as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers to identify incidents related to Rear Wheel Speed Sensors (RWSS) failures. ODI's analysis identified 6,710 incidents of RWSS failure (unique VINs) in MY 2012-2018 Mercedes- Benz and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles upfitted to campers or recreational vehicles (RVs) representing 81 percent of all Sprinter RWSS reports. Complaint and warranty analysis indicated that the majority of incidents (approximately 99%) were related to RWSS moisture intrusion condition in the Sprinter 3500 5-ton variant, which accounts for 98 percent of upfit campers, where moisture build-up and crystal dendrite formation develop in parked RVs and lead to sensor failures. According to the Daimler Information Request (IR) response, if the wheel speed information is detected as implausible by the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit, the ESP system enters a failsafe mode where:-Driver torque requests are no longer accepted;-Cruise control, if used, would be deactivated; -The ESP/ABS system shuts off; and -Multiple warning lamps and messages advise the operator to take the vehicle to the workshop. While the majority of reports involved only ABS and/or ESP warning lights and messages on the instrument cluster due to faulty sensor signals triggering a failsafe mode, some reports cited intermittent sensor failures resulting in increased vehicle speed while in cruise control and degraded ABS or ESP. Degraded ESP functionality may impact driving stability of the 5-ton vehicle.On Feb 3, 2021, following discussion with ODI, Daimler submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a defect in the RWSS disabling the ESP control unit functions in approximately 48,667 MY 2012 through 2018 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 3500 vehicles manufactured from Jan 4, 2012 through Oct 25, 2018 (Recall 21V-042). In its DIR, Daimler indicated that RWSS sensor failures are prevalent in camper vans due to sustained periods of non-use, during which time the moisture may not dry out, remaining inside the plastic housing package. If the moisture within the RWSS dries and the RWSS returns to normal operation, the failsafe mode and the warning lights will disappear at the next ignition cycle, but the sensor fault remains stored within the ESP control unit and can be accessed through a diagnostic evaluation. ODI will continue to monitor field experience in Sprinter non-RVs and Sprinter 2500 RVs 3-ton and 3.5-ton variants (approximately 626 vehicles).Daimler will notify owners of the recalled vehicles and advise them to take their vehicle to a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer, who will replace the RWSS with a repackaged sensor with high robustness against moisture intrusion. Daimler began notifying dealers and owners in Feb 2021. Cause Aftermarket CAN device could be installed into the vehicle's CAN network. Such devices can be but are not limited to, remote start modules, CAN blockers, or high idle modules. Remedy A successful control unit programming session cannot be ensured while aftermarket devices are connected to the vehicle's CAN network. Some of the device companies supply a bypass to allow control unit programming.

Complaint 3: VMI shows US Approved Emission Modification (AEM) AND vehicle is currently registered in Canada. Cause Cause 1: Canadian client traveling in the US. Cause 2: Vehicle came from Canada, but is now registered in the US or held by a US auto dealer. Cause 3: Vehicle came from the US, but is now registered in Canada Remedy Remedy 1: Vehicles registered in Canada are not eligible for the US Approved Emission Modification (AEM). Remedy 2: Verify the vehicle is currently registered in the US, or is owned by a US auto dealer.
