The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle stalled and was towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the engine had failed due to an EGR cooler malfunction. The engine was replaced but the vehicle later experienced failures with the check engine warning light remaining illuminated and there was exhaust smoke odor inside the vehicle while driving. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed the contact that the EGR cooler had failed, and coolant was leaking into the manifold. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V757000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 70,000.
my 2015 ram 1500 has a fuel sensor fail light on the dash. i have seen that the 2016 rams had a recall for this reason, and am wondering why the 2015"s were not. i have seen where a lot of the 15's have had the very same problem. thank you for your time, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2015 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and while idling, the power steering assist suddenly became inoperable. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at initial startup. The dealer was contacted, and it was confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
Abs light traction light and brake light so I have no Anti lock brakes working and Cruise control dose not work because of this issue dodge dealer sad it was a recall dodge manufacture says it is not so this is a safety issue
ABS MODULE failure. Computer chip on back order. Dangerous
I was traveling northbound on [XXX], just before [XXX], at approximately 35 mph on dry asphalt in my 2015 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel just after refilling the fuel tank with 13.999 gal. of diesel fuel. While the vehicle was being driven both fuel-tank retention straps broke. The fuel tank dropped from its retained position and was observed resting on the asphalt beneath the vehicle. The vehicle lost all power causing a near-miss incident while attempting to navigate out of traffic. After coming to a stop, the vehicle was moved to the side of the road and parked just east of [XXX] on [XXX]. Passenger and eyewitness [XXX] experienced the entire incident and also observed the fuel tank beneath the vehicle and the broken straps. The vehicle could crank but would not start; and the fuel lines and electrical supply were both damaged. The check-engine light illuminated, as well as the fuel low and fuel sensor fail messages occurred during and after the incident. AAA towed the vehicle directly to Byers Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram on XXX. Dealer repair order XXX was opened XXX, and the vehicle was physically inspected on XXX. The dealer documented: “VERIFIED CUSTOMER CONCERN. CHECKED AND FOUND REAR FUEL TANK STRAP MOUNT IS RUSTED OUT. NOTHING TO HOLD TANK IN VEHICLE.” The dealer further documented that the vehicle “NEEDS FRAME OR REPAIRED FOR REAR FUEL TANK STRAP.” No recall repairs could be made; therefore the disabled vehicle was returned. The concern is that failure of the fuel-tank retention system caused the fuel tank to drop onto the roadway while the vehicle was moving. The dealer subsequently found that the rear fuel-tank strap mounting area was rusted out and that there was “NOTHING TO HOLD TANK IN VEHICLE.” I request that NHTSA investigate whether corrosion at the fuel-tank strap/frame attachment area can progress to the point that the fuel tank can no longer be safely retained. The ABS Control Module (p/n: 68228991AD) failing and not able to locate any new replacement parts. The failed module results in loss of traction control, electronic slip protection, loss of cruise control, as well as issues with my 4wd, and most importantly no Anti-Lock brakes. Occasionally i will get a no start issue stating "CAN BUS FAIL" resulting from the ABS module. If I unplug the module and re-seat it, the can-bus issue goes away. Luckily it has not resulted in a crash, however I am scared it will as I drive 115 miles daily for work. I have reached out to ATE (the manufacturer) they were not able to assist in the issue. According to Dodge that particular ABS module has been in "engineering review/discontinued" since 2020. Which would make the truck have only been 6 years old at the time it happened. I have been searching for a replacement for almost 3.5 years now but they do not seem to exist.
ABS Module failures. ABS, Traction Control and Cruise Control are all inoperable due to this failure. At time of original complaint (10/11/2022) dealership informed us parts are on back order and approximately $600 USD. The dealer determined that the ABS module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure by phone, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 163,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ram 1500. The contact stated that there was an abnormally strong diesel odor coming from the vehicle at startup and while driving, with black smoke coming from the exhaust pipes while accelerating. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle was overheating and that the catalytic converter was contaminated. The contact was initially informed that the repair was covered under Emission Recall Number: V08; however, the contact was later informed that the catalytic converter replacement was not covered and was required prior to performing the recall repairs. The contact declined to pay for the repair and associated the failure with Emission Recall Number: V08. The manufacturer was notified of the failure by phone, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 177,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ram 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel); however, the fuel system regulator had metal shavings inside. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, diesel fuel was leaking into the interior engine oil and black smoke was leaking from the exhaust, and the vehicle went into LIMP Mode. The "Electronic Throttle System" message was displayed. The vehicle was towed back to the same local dealer, where it was diagnosed with a PCM failure and it was determined that the fuel system regulator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired under recall warranty; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed back to the same local dealer, where it was determined that two fuel injectors, two fuel rails, and the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred and the vehicle was diagnosed as needing a computer replacement. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.

I am submitting this complaint regarding my 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 3.0L, VIN [XXX]. My vehicle previously received an EGR/emissions-related repair in XXX. The vehicle records also show emissions-related campaigns/repairs, including VB1, V08, and VA7. I am concerned that Ram/Stellantis is not honoring applicable EGR coverage associated with the class action lawsuit XXX v. FCA US LLC, Civil Action No.XXX, in the [XXX]. This case concerns alleged defects involving EGR coolers in 2014–2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel trucks. The court-approved settlement provides coverage relating to the EGR cooler issue. I contacted Ram/Stellantis and the dealership and requested that they review my VIN and the applicable recall and extended warranty information. I was told that the applicable coverage was not showing or was not being honored. I was also given manufacturer case number XXX. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether my VIN is covered by the applicable EGR recall, warranty extension, or court-approved settlement and whether my previous January 2023 EGR repair affects eligibility for later applicable coverage. My vehicle currently has approximately 168,000 miles. I can provide repair orders, recall documentation, dealership communications, and other supporting records. I respectfully request that NHTSA document this complaint and investigate whether Stellantis/Ram is properly complying with applicable recall and extended-coverage requirements. The side curtain airbag inflator in our 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel spontaneously exploded without any impact, warning, or deployment command. The inflator violently ruptured inside the headliner, ejecting high‑velocity metal fragments and debris throughout the cabin. The blast destroyed the side curtain airbag system and caused severe interior damage. The explosion was forceful enough that we initially believed the vehicle had been vandalized. After removing the headliner, our upholstery technician identified the source as the airbag curtain inflator, which had ruptured internally. He immediately stopped work due to the extreme safety hazard, liability concerns, and the clear presence of a catastrophic component failure. This failure created a life‑threatening shrapnel hazard inside the passenger compartment. Had this occurred while driving—especially at highway speeds—the sudden detonation, debris, and loss of side‑impact protection could have caused loss of vehicle control, severe injury, or fatal collision. The vehicle now has zero functional side airbag protection and cannot be safely operated. There were no warning lights, no airbag indicators, and no prior symptoms before the inflator ruptured. We contacted both the manufacturer (Stellantis/FCA) and our local Ram dealership. Both refused to inspect or repair the vehicle, stating that our VIN is not currently listed under an active recall. However, this model year does have an existing side curtain airbag inflator recall, and the failure mode we experienced is identical to the known defect involving explosive inflator rupture and shrapnel ejection. The manufacturer is currently refusing communication and has declined to evaluate the vehicle despite the severity of the safety defect. This incident demonstrates a critical and dangerous failure of the airbag inflator system that may affect additional Ram 1500 Rebel vehicles of the same model year. We request NHTSA investigation, and expansion of the recall.
Dealership held vehicle for approximately 2.5 months for major service totaling nearly $6,900 (primarily covered by extended warranty with ~$1,000 paid out-of-pocket). Upon return, the vehicle failed to function properly and was released in a dangerously compromised, life-threatening condition—specifically with a brake line left completely disconnected from the caliper, loose/wiggling, and actively leaking brake fluid. Vehicle had to be towed to an independent facility (John Kent Auto + Truck Repair), where I paid $215 to diagnose and rectify safety issues caused/missed by Tate Dodge. This hazardous mechanical failure occurred while driving the vehicle with my family on board. Shockingly, a SUET CAKE was apparently deliberately left sitting inside the engine bay near the battery, a second hazard to myself and the public - rodents could eat the engine wires. Condition, extreme safety hazards, and gross service negligence officially documented via Anne Arundel County Police Department Incident Report #2026199618. Dealership management has ignored all communication and requests for remediation."
The contact owns a 2015 Ram 1500. The contact stated that the dealer performed an unknown software update associated with an unknown class-action lawsuit settlement without the owner's consent. Following the software update, the vehicle experienced cooling system failures, including oil intrusion in the coolant reservoir and brown and burnt coolant. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions and was eventually diagnosed with a turbocharger oil leak. The turbocharger was replaced under warranty; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer several times, and the diesel particulate filter (DPF) was replaced. Additionally, while driving 68 MPH, the vehicle stalled, and the low oil pressure warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the engine oil and oil filter were replaced; however, the failure worsened, and the engine made an abnormal knocking sound. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, and was diagnosed with a blown head gasket, and the engine was replaced; however, the failure persisted, resulting in additional failures, including emissions failures. The vehicle was towed to an independent diesel mechanic, where no diagnostic trouble codes were found. The contact stated that the new engine failed at 100,000 miles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in the driveway, there was a part hanging down from the vehicle. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that the front fuel bracket was fractured and had detached. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and the failure was associated with Warranty Extension X75 (Fuel Tank Strap Mounting Bracket), which was associated with the vehicle; however, the contact was informed that the installation would be an out-of-pocket expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 14 Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) reports and 6 EWR Death & Injury (D&I) reports describing post recall remedy failures of the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system in certain Model Year (MY) 2013-2018 RAM pickup trucks. The subject vehicle models include 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks equipped with a column mounted shift lever. The failures of the BTSI described in the VOQs occurred on vehicles that had all previously been repaired under recall 17V-821 or 18V-100.Both recalls address a potential condition which can cause the BTSI locking pin to become stuck allowing the transmission to be shifted out of Park without depressing the brake pedal and/or without having a key in the ignition.Shifting the transmission out of Park when not having the brake pedal depressed can result in a vehicle rollaway. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to review the effectiveness of the 17V-821 and 18V-100 recall remedies, understand the root cause of additional vehicle rollaway incidents, and identify any other possible root cause that may affect the performance of the BTSI system. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 380 reports from consumers alleging an intermittent or complete loss of power steering assistance in certain 2013-2016 Ram 1500.The failure allegations occur at various speeds with limited detectability to the driver. On March 23, 2016 Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA) conducted recall campaign 16V-167 to address a possible contamination of the electrical power steering unit in certain model year 2015-2016 RAM 1500. The recall involved 440 vehicles and potentially resulted in loss of power steering assist.Consumer complaints indicate a similar failure may be occurring in vehicles that are out of scope of the recall.A Recall Query has been opened to determine if the scope of the recall mentioned above is correct or if another defect might exist that causes the alleged steering concerns. The reports cited above are listed in the attached document.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response materials from both FCA and BMW, NHTSA determined that sufficient information to identify a comprehensive recall population could not be produced by FCA and BMW.During the investigation FCA filed recalls 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087 which include vehicles not identified in the initial subject population by ODI. ODI also received recall 21V586, involving loss of motive power due to failed CP4 fuel pumps on certain BMW manufactured vehicles. An information request letter response received from BMW indicated that failed pumps on their vehicles were caused by an interaction between pump internal components and US market diesel fuel, leading to increased slip and eventual particle-generating wear surface. Additional work will be done to identify whether a similar root cause is associated with the FCA recalled population and if similar wear dynamics occur on pumps supplied to vehicle manufacturers other than those included in the recalled population.ODI has upgraded this investigation to an EA in order to 1) determine engineering specifications of internal pump components that are correlated with pump failure leading to loss of motive power or other safety related hazards, 2) identify vehicle populations equipped with alleged defective pump variants, 3) assess if vehicles equipped with alleged defective pump variants result in an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety and 4) gather and review any other relevant information related to high pressure fuel pump failure associated with the subject populations of recalls 21V586, 21V880, 21E094, 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087.Review of the above information will allow NHTSA to confirm root cause and recall remedy viability, and identify and evaluate vehicle populations equipped with pump components that may pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID using the following complaint identification numbers: 11257550, 11351441, 11361603, 11361616, 11365300, 11365426, 11365858, 11366401, 11372337, 11373793, 11374797, 11376793, 11377871, 11378173, 11384377, 11386063, 11387018, 11399710, 11402550, 11415339, 11418868, 11418870, 11427075, 11434276, 11436807, 11437226, 11437249, 11437273, 11437292, 11437294, 11437394, 11437399, 11437403, 11437405, 11437423, 11437528, 11437565, 11437579, 11437580, 11437590, 11437679, 11437744, 11437781, 11437842, 11437993, 11438006, 11438008, 11438121, 11438138, 11438155, 11438392, 11438629, 11439359, 11439879, 11440397, 11443030, 11446542, 11448163, 11453556, 11458918, 11460558, 11469337
Basis – On December 16, 2016, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE16-014 to investigate 43 vehicle rollaway incidents with operators alleging they had shifted to Park and then exited the vehicle prior to the rollway incidents. These complaints involved multiple Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) model and model year vehicles that share a common electronic rotary shifter design. Of the 43 consumer complaints, 25 complaints alleged crashes, and eight complaints alleged at least one injury. Subject Vehicles – When NHTSA opened the investigation, the subject vehicles were model year (MY) 2013-2016 Ram 1500 vehicles and MY 2014-2016 Dodge Durango vehicles equipped with a rotary electronic shifter. However, NHTSA expanded the scope of the investigation to include subsequent model years of the same model vehicles when the Agency learned that those new model year vehicles use the same rotary shifter. Additionally, all subject vehicles manufactured by FCA are equipped with electronic rotary shifters supplied by Kostal Automotive. Reason for closing - During the course of this investigation, ODI did not find evidence that a vehicle-based design or manufacturing defect was the cause of vehicle rollaway incidents on the subject vehicles. Nevertheless, given the risk of a vehicle rollaway, FCA’s CSN actions provide automated vehicle securement when an operator attempts to exit the vehicle without successfully achieving a Park position with the rotary shifter mechanism. ODI closely monitored the subject vehicles on which the CSN actions implement a vehicle securement strategy and found that the CSN actions were effective in reducing the frequency of vehicle rollaway incidents in the subject vehicles. ODI analyzed the incidents when a CSN had been implemented and a rollaway still occurred, and ODI was unable to find an actionable defect that caused vehicle rollaway incidents. ODI found that the failure rates on subject vehicles that received a CSN remedy were similar to the failure rates on other vehicle populations and additionally had similar mechanisms as other vehicle populations such as slippery surfaces and various mechanical failures. Furthermore, as discussed above, after FCA’s release of the CSN actions, consumer complaints have decreased significantly. Given the absence of an identified safety defect based on available information and FCA’s customer satisfaction campaign which addresses the failure mode, further action is not warranted at this time. Accordingly, this Preliminary Evaluation is closed. However, the Agency reserves the right to take further action, if warranted. Please see the attached detailed closing summary for more information. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
On July 23, 2015, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched Safety Recall 15V-461 to remedy security vulnerabilities in approximately 1.4 million model year (MY) 2013 through 2015 vehicles equipped with Uconnect head units (HU) 8.4A (RA3 radio) and 8.4AN (RA4 radio) manufactured by Harman International. On July 24, 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Recall Query, RQ 15-004, to investigate HU security vulnerabilities and remedy effectiveness in the recalled population and to determine whether similar units have been supplied for use in other FCA vehicles. In an August 11, 2015 letter, FCA submitted a second Part 573 safety recall report expanding the scope of the Uconnect RA4 model radio to include additional 7,810 MY 2015 Jeep Renegade vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2014 through June 25, 2015 (Recall 15V-508).Scope analysis indicated that Uconnect radios installed in FCA vehicles not included in recalls 15V-461 or 15V-508 (subject recalls) are not equipped with built-in cellular access or short range wireless communication features and, thus, do not contain the security vulnerabilities addressed by the subject recalls. SUBJECT VEHICLES: MY2014 through 2015 Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles; MY2013 through 2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500/5500 pickup trucks; MY2013 through 2015 Dodge Viper vehicles; and MY2015 Chrysler 200, 300, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Charger and Challenger vehicles.According to FCA, long and short range wireless vulnerabilities identified in the recalled vehicles could allow unauthorized third-party access to, and manipulation of, networked vehicle control systems.Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities, coupled with reverse engineering of networked microprocessor control modules, could result in unauthorized manipulation of vehicle control systems. This unauthorized manipulation of vehicle controls and systems could expose the driver, vehicle occupants or other highway users to an increased risk of injury.FCA and its network provider, Sprint, conducted a nationwide campaign to block access to a radio communications port that was unintentionally left open.On July 27, 2015, short range wireless vulnerabilities were also blocked. Finally, third party security evaluation and regression testing identified vulnerabilities that were either remedied by Sprint or through updates to the FCA Uconnect software.ODI identified a total of 30 complaints or field reports on unique vehicles submitted by FCA (29) or received by NHTSA (1) alleging incidents of theft from a vehicle or anomalous performance that the owner alleged were caused by, or may have been caused by, remote hacking.Twenty-six (87%) of these reports were submitted after a magazine article was published on July 21, 2015, describing the remote hacking of an FCA vehicle by researchers who were able to affect the operation of various vehicle control systems, including the service brakes, steering, throttle and ignition. Most of the complaints involved vehicle systems that were not safety critical (e.g., complaints related to radio, navigation system, or air-conditioning control) and did not affect vehicle control.Three complaints reported engine stalls. One owner reported sudden unintended acceleration allegedly related to hacking.None of the complaints or field reports reviewed involved the steering and braking vehicle control effects demonstrated by the research hackers prior to the recall. There were no confirmed incidents of hacking in any of the records reviewed by ODI.The remedies completed by Sprint and FCA appear to have eliminated vulnerabilities that mi
