Incident 2 of 2: I am filing two separate formal complaints regarding two incidents in which my 2022 Ram 1500 eTorque unexpectedly shut down while driving, posing serious safety risks and raising concerns about an unresolved vehicle defect. Second Incident: May 30–June 23, 2026-While traveling on a mountain road, my truck again shut down unexpectedly. Without cell service, I was unable to call for assistance. After approximately 15 minutes, I restarted the truck and drove home. The following day, the truck would not start, requiring a tow to another Ram service facility. Although the dealership again focused on the 48-volt battery, it could not confirm the cause of either shutdown. I was told a failed fuse prevented the truck from starting, but no underlying cause was identified. Repeated, unexplained failures present an unacceptable safety risk to me, my family, and other motorists. I continue to drive with the concern that my truck could shut down in traffic or in a remote location, potentially resulting in serious injury or loss of life. The approaching expiration of the 48-volt battery warranty further compounds my concerns, as I could face significant repair costs for a problem that remains unresolved. I respectfully urge NHTSA to investigate these incidents and determine whether they indicate a broader safety defect requiring corrective action. I believe repeated failures and inability to identify the cause warrants serious regulatory attention before another event occurs.
Incident 1 or 2. I am filing two separate formal complaints regarding two incidents in which my 2022 Ram 1500 eTorque unexpectedly shut down while driving, posing serious safety risks and raising concerns about an unresolved vehicle defect. First Incident: September 25–November 4, 2025-During rush-hour traffic on a major Idaho highway, my truck suddenly shut down while I was traveling in the far-left lane. I had to maneuver onto the left shoulder to avoid being struck by another vehicle. After waiting approximately 30 minutes for a tow truck, I was without my vehicle for nearly six weeks while the service center assessed the problem and awaited parts. Repairs included replacing the 12-volt battery at my expense and the 48-volt battery under warranty.
I have a 2022 RAM 1500 Longhorn Limited VIN [XXX]. It had a real problem a couple of years ago with stalling to a stop and die when making slow left hand turns. Went to the dealer twice. They claimed it was nothing but after the second visit, it no longer did it anymore. It’s done it twice in the past couple of months. This evening it did it at a three way stop sign with no turn. When it shuts off it’s in drive of course and it auto shifts to park and sets the emergency brake automatically. Then I can start the engine again but I have the press the emergency brake switch button to release it. Then the low voltage light appears on the instrument cluster and the voltage gauge stays only about a quarter of the way up above zero on the negative side. To remedy this I have to shut off the engine and sometimes open the door for a while, close it and then start the engine and all is well again. I know RAM plays dumb when I describe this to them. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The rear drivers side glass spontaneously shattered.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that the driver’s side sun visor became detached at the elbow hinge and was dangling in the view of the driver while driving. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving, the steering wheel seized and failed to function properly. The contact pulled over safely, and after restarting the vehicle, the vehicle temporarily operated normally however, the failure recurred. Upon restarting and driving the vehicle, the vehicle lost steering functionality, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and drive up on the embankment on two wheels. The contact stated that the running boards previously failed to operate, creating a concern for passengers exiting the vehicle. While attempting to tow the vehicle to the dealer, a warning light flashed on the instrument panel. The manufacturer was notified, and the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with an electric power steering (EPS) internal rack and pinion failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 53,000.
The sun visor (driver and passenger) break with normal use. This can cause the visor to suddenly drop into the drivers field of view or potentially strike the driver in the head depending on if it is being used in the standard down position or if the extension bar is being used on the front or side position. This could cause the driver to have a physical reaction even if the risk of injury from the strike is relatively small, thus causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. Mine fell down into my field of view while I was stopped at a red light, when I attempted to lower the visor. Fortunately I was stoped at a stop light and was able to remove the obstruction prior to moving the vehicle.
I am reporting a recurring engine defect involving the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) in my 2022 RAM 1500 Big Horn equipped with the 5.7L HEMI eTorque engine. Since purchasing the vehicle in March 2023 with approximately 4,555 miles, the truck has experienced four separate MDS-related failures despite multiple repair attempts by authorized RAM dealerships. On February 7, 2025, at approximately 38,115 miles, a RAM dealership diagnosed an MDS solenoid that had physically separated and required extraction and replacement. On May 1, 2026, at approximately 66,149 miles, another authorized dealership diagnosed an MDS failure involving cylinder No. 1 and performed repairs under warranty. Despite these repairs, the engine experienced another serious failure at approximately 73,000 miles. The most recent failure involved metal contamination and catastrophic internal engine damage, leaving the vehicle completely inoperable. I am concerned that the repeated MDS-related failures indicate a potential defect in the engine's cylinder-deactivation or valvetrain components. Failures involving these components may cause significant engine damage and potentially result in an unexpected loss of engine power while driving, creating a safety risk for the driver, passengers, and surrounding motorists. The vehicle has undergone multiple repairs for recurring MDS-related problems, but the issue has not been permanently resolved. I believe the final engine failure may be connected to the previously documented MDS failures, although the exact mechanical cause has not yet been independently confirmed. I am requesting that NHTSA review these recurring failures to determine whether they indicate a broader safety-related defect affecting RAM vehicles equipped with the 5.7L HEMI MDS engine.
The truck has stalled twice while in motion. Leaving me stopped suddenly in middle of the street. This has happened on 2 separate occasions. I did not think to save the dates. Initially I thought maybe I wasnt giving it enough throttle, but after reading more into it I see there was a recall for the previous year model and this may be considered problematic as well. The truck made me apply the brake to restart, and release the emergency brake since it applied on its own. The first stall I had to turn sharp and fast to try getting to the side of the road to make room for coming and going traffic and avoid being in a collision. The second stall I was luckily the only driver on the road at the time. I'm reading it could be the MGU system and I have also noticed my battery voltage starting to fluctuate more. I jave not taken to the dealer yet as this is my means of transportation for work and we are a 1 income family of 4. I do not get a rental if I have to leave the truck at the dealer.
The vehicle experienced a sudden powertrain failure at a busy intersection failing to automatically restart during an auto start/stop cycle on October 6, 2026. Upon manual override, the mild hybrid motor generator unit (MGU failed to adequately charge the 48V/12V electrical systems. This failure leaves the driver highly vulnerable to a total high-speed vehicle stall in active traffic due to rapid battery depletion. The manufacturer and dealership is unlawfully denying federal coverage for this emissions/hybrid component. At the time of the incident the vehicle had approximately 59,248 miles on it. I called the dealership (as I believed this would be covered under the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty) that day describing the failure. The earliest appointment I could get was October 16th. By the time my truck went in for the appointment the mileage was 60,130 miles. The dealership Identified the failure as the charging system for the Ram Hemi E-Torques motor. Specifically the Serpentine Belt Tensioner Part #: 05281543AD, 05281956AA, and 68518738AA. Also prescribed a software update. The total quote for the repairs was 1534.80. The dealership denied warranty coverage under the powertrain stating the vehicle had exceeded 60,000 miles. I showed them a picture of my odometer at 59,248 miles dated for the day i reported the problem and scheduled the appointment. They then informed me that standard accessory parts (belts, tensioners, etc.) are not covered under the 60,000mile warranty. They also informed me they are not covered under the 80,000 mile emissions warranty either despite their failure resulting in a complete failure of the federally mandated emissions system. The dealership indicated approximately 30-40 codes were triggered during the incident including a system code for the MGU. I requested a record of these codes and the dealership is unable/unwilling to provide.
Back up camera shows blue on reverse.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500 TRX. The contact stated that while driving over road bumps, the suspension system failed to engage. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the suspension control module had failed and required replacement. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,000.
Three times in the past month, I have been turning left and had the vehicle turn off. Twice the emergency brake automatically applied and the truck auto-shifted to park, the 3rd time my steering and engine turned off. The 1st time I thought perhaps I had accidentally hit the start button, the 2nd time I was fairly sure I hadn't, and the 3rd time both hands were on the wheel so I could not have. This 3rd time, I continued to roll thru the intersection until I rolled to a stop and the gear selector remained in drive. I am taking the truck to the dealership today. Luckily, there was no other vehicle near me when any of these instances happened but im worried that will not be the case in the future.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. After waiting approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle was able to start. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who inspected the battery, alternator, and starter but found no failures. The contact was advised to replace the key fob battery; however, after replacing the key fob battery, the failure persisted. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.
On three occasions over the last 6 months my truck has died completely. The first time all warning lights came on and there was no speed showing but the truck kept driving. When I finally parked and restarted everything was normal. The second time all warning lights came on the cool air turned hot and then it just died while driving. I was very close to parking so no danger there. This last time I was parked in a swamp hunting and when we got back to the truck it was completely dead. I was able to jump it thankfully as we were in the middle of nowhere and it was hard to get to, not sure help would have been able to get in there. When restarted it once again had all warning lights on, said I had no gas, and wouldn't provide my speed when driving.
My 2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn V6 eTorque stumbles and cuts out during hard acceleration, this issue, when it happens has caused a dangerous performance issue to the point that I have almost been struck from behind while attempting to join the flow of traffic, the actions of either the PCM or some other engine control system cuts all motor RPM to barely an idle while traffic around me are at speeds of 40+ MPH while I am attempting to accelerate, I get a brief warning message on the display screen that flickers for less then one second (I am unable to read the warning) this is extremely dangerous. I also have been getting UCONNECT ERROR - none of these are leaving error codes in the vehicles memory.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V263000 (Fuel System, Diesel); however, a failure occurred after the repair. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with high-pressure fuel injector pump failure. The contact was informed that the high-pressure fuel injector pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted by phone. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V263000 (Fuel System, Diesel) and the recall repair was performed. However, a year after the recall repair was performed, the fuel pump failed, causing damages to the fuel system. The contact stated that the fuel pump had no issues prior to the recall repair. The vehicle was towed to a dealer. The contact stated that the pump made an abnormal sound while driving 55 MPH, and the vehicle shut off. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The dealer confirmed the failure; however, parts were not available to repair the vehicle. The dealer agreed to cover the repair under a recall warranty. The failure mileage was 144,000.
For the 6th time this year. I was going to take off from stopped when I went to accelerate and my truck shut off, showed switch to park. When I went to apply my brakes. It automatically engages the parking break while moving. This time. A vehicle near rear ended me with my kids in the car due to the abrupt halt. Truck had a full tank. Seat belts were worn. Just engine dying and slamming itself into park. I’ve been searching and seen lots of complaints about similar models and no recall for the 2022 1500. This is becoming a reoccurring issue that is endangering the safety of my children
Approximately 10 mins into my drive there was a burning smell in my cab, then within a few seconds there was a loud popping/exploding sound. I pulled into a parking lot within 100 feet and exited vehicle. I went to front of vehicle to see if there was smoke and after finding none I leaned back inside my truck’s cab and realized not only was the burning smell stronger but there was visible smoke lingering. At that point I saw that one of the back stationary windows was shattered. Looking closer I saw that below the window the glass was charred and the plastic trim had melted slightly. I stayed out of the vehicle and started researching the possible cause. I read several reports of issues with 5th generation Ram trucks, like mine, experienced issues like mine caused from faulty rear defrosters. After consulting with someone over the phone, I pulled the fuse for the rear defrosters to be certain there would no longer be any type of electric current flowing to the defrosters.
On October 1, 2026, my 2022 Ram 1500 Rebel with the 5.7L HEMI eTorque mild-hybrid system failed to restart after an automatic engine stop-start event at a red light. The engine shut off as designed when I stopped. After about 90 seconds the light turned green and I released the brake, but the engine did not restart, and the truck sat motionless in the traffic lane. When I pressed the accelerator, the engine revved and the truck lurched forward unexpectedly. At that point a battery warning light and an auto stop-start warning (stop-start symbol with an exclamation mark) appeared on the dash. No warning lights appeared before the failure. I pulled over and was able to restart the truck, but the dash voltmeter read about 12.8V while running instead of the normal 14.4V, meaning the 12V battery was not being charged. I drove to my destination. After I shut the truck off and restarted it, voltage returned to about 14.4V. Note that this is not the first time this has occurred and I often keep the automatic start/stop off because it seems to have so many issues.
It won’t let me do cruise control and continues to throw some sort of TPMS isn’t working verbage
Sunshade attachment point at the headliner breaks. The sunshade them falls down in front of the driver blocking visibility.
9.15.26 Vehicle came to an abrupt stop at a low speed and put auto brake on and vehicle shut off. I had to restart the vehicle manually. I had already shut of the auto shut off prior this. 9.17.26 Vehicle began to stall but started back up with gas pressure. 9.23.26 Vehicle stopped and went into auto brake, shut off at low speed again. Restarted with the start button. Got to my destination, while idle the hazards lights turned on all by itself. Also, the radio screen will flicker every now and again. 9.23.26 The vehicle was picked up by the dealership to have it looked at.
I was in an emergent situation and beyond for my own safety but also to follow the law i had android auto already connected and used [XXX] to hands free call [XXX] without taking my eyes off the road since the emergent situation was someone almost ran me off the road. When i told [XXX] to call [XXX] [XXX] wasted precious time asking me if im sure that i want to call [XXX] while im trying to report the person who almost ran me off the highway at 75 miles an hour while they went almost 85 90. That is ridiculously insane and when i probed [XXX] as to why it did this it said because it used too call [XXX] without need. I promise no one who is actually in need of it would ever give a XXXXXX if [XXX] occasionally called [XXX] by accident espcially when it involves precious milliseconds not minutes. I "sent feedback" but that never does a XXX thing and when i tried to follow the instructions i needed to use to grab the logs to add to this report the andoid auto section didnt even exist and ever so conviently the logs for that specific interaction couldn't be found either which i find extremely suspicious after the 100's of shady/illegal/harmful things that google/alphabet has done to hide their own fault whenever their products fail. I did after this finally get in contact with the police at XXX dispatch but since i was driving they just asked for my name and info if they needed to get ahold of me so i dont have any information on a police report yet or may not ever recieve info on that regard. I am making this report because it's the only way ive found to report this information outside of google so that hopefully something may get done because that is absolutely unacceptable and google needs to fix it. Idc if they pay a settlement or whatever i just care that it gets XXX fixed because nobody should have to feel what i felt when i was trying to call emergency services and making sure i wasnt misdialing was more important than the emergency INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 80 consumer complaints alleging an engine stall and loss of motive power on model year (MY) 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUV vehicles. The particular engines in the subject vehicles are equipped with the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC (FCA) 5.7L Hemi eTorque system. The eTorque system is a mild hybrid system that lets the vehicle partially power itself. It accomplishes this by converting the captured energy from the braking system into electricity for the battery pack, which is then used to power a variety of electrical components. ETorque engines replace the alternator with a 48-volt battery-powered belt drive and a motor generator. The motor generator provides extra torque to the crankshaft during gear changes. Simultaneously, the motor generator uses the 48-volt battery pack to increase torque. Many of the complaints state that the vehicle's engine would shut off, often while travelling at slow speed, the vehicle would shift into park and apply the emergency brake. The vehicles were sometimes able to be restarted. In addition, complaints state that the malfunction warning light with the battery fault symbol appeared on the dash. Many complaints state that a low voltage condition fault is present, sometimes not being able to restart the vehicle. On April 13, 2023, FCA announced recall 23V-265 describing a defect in certain 2021 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 5.7L eTorque engines. The recall described a defect in the powertrain control module software can cause an incorrect fuel mixture condition in the engine, and result in an engine stall. In February of 2024, ODI provided the complaints on the 2022 Ram 1500 and Wagoneer vehicles to FCA. After reviewing the complaints, FCA stated that “the loss of motive power was likely not caused by an over rich fuel condition (as outlined in recall 23V-265), but rather some other cause (e.g., an electrical concern that causes the engine to shut down).” A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, root cause(s) and consequences of these loss/stall of motive power incidents. Additionally, ODI may expand the scope of the subject population during the investigation, if needed. The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE21-021 on October 14, 2021, to investigate incidents alleging a stall/loss of motive power as a result of high-pressure fuel pump failures in certain model year (MY) 2019-2020 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 heavy duty trucks equipped with 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines. During the investigation, ODI sought to determine if the related defect allegation was limited in scope to the recalled population. After review of information request response materials from both FCA and BMW, NHTSA determined that sufficient information to identify a comprehensive recall population could not be produced by FCA and BMW.During the investigation FCA filed recalls 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087 which include vehicles not identified in the initial subject population by ODI. ODI also received recall 21V586, involving loss of motive power due to failed CP4 fuel pumps on certain BMW manufactured vehicles. An information request letter response received from BMW indicated that failed pumps on their vehicles were caused by an interaction between pump internal components and US market diesel fuel, leading to increased slip and eventual particle-generating wear surface. Additional work will be done to identify whether a similar root cause is associated with the FCA recalled population and if similar wear dynamics occur on pumps supplied to vehicle manufacturers other than those included in the recalled population.ODI has upgraded this investigation to an EA in order to 1) determine engineering specifications of internal pump components that are correlated with pump failure leading to loss of motive power or other safety related hazards, 2) identify vehicle populations equipped with alleged defective pump variants, 3) assess if vehicles equipped with alleged defective pump variants result in an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety and 4) gather and review any other relevant information related to high pressure fuel pump failure associated with the subject populations of recalls 21V586, 21V880, 21E094, 22V406, 22E048, 22V767, and 22E087.Review of the above information will allow NHTSA to confirm root cause and recall remedy viability, and identify and evaluate vehicle populations equipped with pump components that may pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID using the following complaint identification numbers: 11257550, 11351441, 11361603, 11361616, 11365300, 11365426, 11365858, 11366401, 11372337, 11373793, 11374797, 11376793, 11377871, 11378173, 11384377, 11386063, 11387018, 11399710, 11402550, 11415339, 11418868, 11418870, 11427075, 11434276, 11436807, 11437226, 11437249, 11437273, 11437292, 11437294, 11437394, 11437399, 11437403, 11437405, 11437423, 11437528, 11437565, 11437579, 11437580, 11437590, 11437679, 11437744, 11437781, 11437842, 11437993, 11438006, 11438008, 11438121, 11438138, 11438155, 11438392, 11438629, 11439359, 11439879, 11440397, 11443030, 11446542, 11448163, 11453556, 11458918, 11460558, 11469337
