I am submitting a vehicle safety complaint regarding my 2011 Nissan Versa SL. VIN: [XXX] Incident Date: XXX Time: Approximately 7:30 a.m. While driving to work and making a right turn from [XXX] onto [XXX], the driver-side airbag suddenly deployed without a collision or impact. Prior to the deployment, the vehicle experienced abnormal electrical symptoms involving the steering wheel. The horn had previously stopped working and later began sounding continuously. After the airbag deployed, I noticed a burning odor, and approximately 20 minutes later, the inside of the steering-wheel/airbag area was still very hot. I disconnected the negative battery cable as a safety precaution. My insurance company referred the vehicle to Caliber Collision, where an SRS diagnostic scan showed: B1049 – CURRENT – Driver Airbag Module OPEN B1057 – CURRENT – Driver Airbag Module SHORT B1050/B1055 – HISTORY – Driver Airbag VB-SHORT B1051/B1056 – HISTORY – Driver Airbag GND-SHORT B1013 – HISTORY – Control Unit I photographed the scan results. Caliber informed me that they do not repair this type of SRS/electrical malfunction. I am concerned that an airbag deployed without a crash or impact while the vehicle was in motion, accompanied by abnormal electrical symptoms and multiple SRS fault codes. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this incident as a potential vehicle safety defect and determine whether similar incidents have been reported involving the 2011 Nissan Versa or related SRS components. On September 11th, my wife was involved in a car accident while driving her 2011 Nissan Versa. The collision resulted in the vehicle rolling over and ending up upside down. Shockingly, none of the airbags deployed during this serious incident. A family member recommended that I report this to Nissan, which I promptly did. However, their response, received last Friday, was rather concerning. According to Nissan, the airbags were not designed to deploy in the event of a rollover crash, and they suggested there was no further action to be taken on their end. Today, I consulted with an attorney's office regarding this matter, and they advised me to report the incident to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a crucial step. Consequently, I am submitting these details to NHTSA to ensure that this incident is properly documented and investigated. Safety is paramount, and I believe it is essential to bring attention to this situation so that appropriate actions can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
On 7-25-23, my wife and I were riding in our 2011 Nissan Versa locally and noticed a banging noise coming from the front end of the car, especially when hitting bumps or uneven payment. When we parked the car at home, I noticed a small piece of metal shaped like a coil spring on the road where we usually park. I phoned our mechanic at Ryan Automotive Goodyear in Moon Twp and asked him if he had time today to see where the banging noise was coming from. We arrived at Ryan Automotive around 3pm. Our mechanic [XXX] said that the front coil spring has broken and the top engine mount needs to be replaced as well. There was a recall on the front coil springs back in 2015 that I had done at West Hills Nissan in Moon Twp, which was sold to #1 Cochran Nissan. Cochran Nissan has no record of my car being serviced at West Hills Nissan along with the recall work. I am wondering if West Hills Nissan ever replaced the coil springs or did they use the recalled coil springs for the replacement. I am trying to find out if the front coil spring recall can still be honored at a local Nissan Dealer. When I searched for official Nissan recall centers near me, #1 Cochran Nissan does not come up. As you know, a broken coil spring can easily fall below the strut and slice the sidewall on your tire in the blink of an eye, especially on the highway. This is a dangerous situation, so I would like to get the recall on the front coil springs done at a local Nissan dealer, otherwise I will consider trading the car in toward a newer car. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] mobile and [XXX] . [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
upon startup, light illuminates for DRIVER/PASSENGER AIR BAGS OFF. This light intermittently shuts off during driving which tells me something is wrong or not stable with the air bag system even though this VIN has no unrepaired recalls.

Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 139,000.
The passenger seat belt keeps locking up anytime me and my wife put the seat belt on. For the seat belt to loosen we have to unclip the seat belt but anytime we even stretch the seat belt and then put it back in the clip it tightens up again. This is when we are stationary and not moving but it also happens even when we are just driving and I’m not even pressing the brake pedal when it happens.
The contact owns a 2011 Nissan Versa. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH and going over a pothole, the vehicle began to drift to the left. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. Driver door handle will not open from inside car at times. The exterior handle locking mechanism gets stuck not allowing the door to open from the inside. When this happens, I need to roll down the window to reach outside and jiggle the exterior door handle in order to be able to open the door from inside the car. This poses a serious safety hazard of the driver not being able to exit the vehicle in an emergency. This is a common issue with the Nissan Versa car on many car forums online. I believe there was a recall issued for newer model cars, but not the 2011 year.
I do not live in the salt snow States my coils snapped my wheel almost flew off and the dealer is very difficult
The horn ,alarm system was effected the air bag light came back on as well the horn IS not working or blowiing the keys IS not locking the door and now rockaway nissan wants me to replace the air bag and the the horn relay for a total of 130075 plus labor its not right I need some help with this if you could send a recall form again to replace the replace we are in a pandamic and am not working please see what you could do to solve this problem
The contact owns a 2011 Nissan Versa. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the accelerator pedal was depressed however, the vehicle hesitated. The contact felt the hesitation coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle as the low tire pressure warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over and saw that the front passenger’s side tire was completely flat and torn all the way around. The contact called roadside assistance and a spare tire was placed on the vehicle. The contact then drove to a dealer and was informed that the front passenger’s side coil spring fractured, which caused the puncture and damage to the tire. The dealer replaced the front driver’s and passenger’s side coil springs along with the tire. After the repair, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V573000 (Suspension) which he linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the recall and informed him that the Vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 188,000. The tire puncture caused the tire to burst, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle. The puncture was more like a shredding of the entire circumference.

Cracked coil spring was replaced in 2016 per recall. While driving on 10/12/2020, suspension issues occurred again making the car undriveable and barely avoiding serious accident and injury. There was a loud crack from under the car and the vehicle became unstable. I got to a safe spot to pull over and had it towed.
After receiving many calls and letters for air bags recalls, I set an appointment with the agent josh for thursday july 16, 2020 at performance nissan at 1345 south federal highway, pompano fl 33062, at 7:30 am. When talking with josh, he told me that there are two recalls in my nissan. I asked him to do both recalls at the same time. He said both recalls could take one hour. We set the appointment and he gave me the phone to talk to performance nissan for confirmation. On thursday july 16, 2020, I went to the appointment. It took me ,more than three hours at the place. However, at the end they told me they did one recall, and they ordered the parts for the other recall, which part they will have in three days. when they gave the car, I felt that it did not sound as it used to before the recall. The ac did not work perfectly, but I thought that was because they did not finish with the air bag recall. On friday july 17, 2020, my wife drove the car to work as it IS her car. But when she came back, she told me that the car had problems and she did not want to drive it again. I said to her that the problem IS because they did not complete the recall. on wednesday july 22, 2020, my wife told me to drop her at work. I took the car, and when I started it I felt the car was making noise and shaking. For I did not drive it , and I saw at that time that my wife was in danger while driving the car. After I dropped her at work, I called perfprmance nissance to report that they damaged my car while performing the air bags recall. They called me to drive the car to them for diagnostic. I told them that they must send someone to tow the car. they instead gave me a phone number to call for pick up the car. They picked up the car by 3;00 pm.on thursday 23, 2020 email: [xxx] redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(B)(6). *Cc
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. See 2016 Blomquist Report at www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/documents/expert_report-hrblomquist.pdf.Consequently, all frontal inflators using propellant 2004 that do not contain a "desiccant" (a substance that traps and holds moisture) in US vehicles are under recall. These "non-desiccated" inflators either have been or are required to be replaced. In some cases, the remedy part for these recalled inflators was, or will be, an inflator using either propellant 2004 or 2004L that does contain a desiccant. None of these "desiccated" remedy parts (which were installed in older model year vehicles) are currently under recall for a degradation concern. Certain subsets of desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004 for use as original equipment, however, have been recalled for a degradation concern. All Takata inflators produced with propellant 2004L contain desiccant, and none of these desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L are under recall for a degradation concern. There have been no reported field ruptures in any non-recalled desiccated PSAN inflators. It is understood that desiccants fully saturate at some threshold, at which point any additional moisture will not be captured. This means the degradation process observed in non-desiccated inflators using propellant 2004 may also occur in non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004, assuming additional moisture enters the inflator and high temperature cycling occurs. Based on available information, desiccant saturation can occur within the first five years in the worst environments, and the time required for full saturation is affected by multiple factors. While no present safety risk has been identified, further work is needed to evaluate the future risk of non-recalled desiccated inflators using propellant 2004.Three entities -- Takata (now known as TK Global), the Independent Testing Coalition, and Exponent -- have been studying the long-term behavior of Takata desiccated PSAN inflators using propellant 2004L (as well as 2004) in the presence of moisture and temperature cycling. The research efforts, which include development of predictive modeling techniques and field sample analysis, are ongoing. To date, none of the researchers have identified field evidence showing that propellant 2004L is undergoing a degradation process that leads to aggressive deployment and potential rupture. However, the time in service of such inflators remains short compared to that of the inflators using propellant 2004. Further study is needed to assess the long-term safety of desiccated inflators using propellant 2004L.The Office of Defects Investigation is opening this investigation to examine whether a safety defect related to propellant degradation exists in non-recalled desiccated PSAN frontal inflators manufactured by Takata. This investigation will require extensive information on Takata production processes and surveys of inflators in the field. Lists of recall actions that may have used desiccated PSAN inflators as remedy parts, as well as the makes and models originally manufactured with them, is available with the downloadable version of this document (see nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=EA21002 -- note this information is subject to change/revision as the investigation proceeds). This investigation does not supersede EA15-001, which remains open.
In a letter dated September 10,2015, Nissan North America,Inc. (Nissan) notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of a safety defect that may result in coil spring fracture in approximately 218,019 model year (MY) 2007 through 2012 Nissan Versa vehiclesproduced from May 8, 2006 through November12, 2012 and originally sold or ever registered in the following 22 states and the District of Columbia: Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin (NHTSA Recall 15V-573).Nissan indicated that the recalled vehicles may contain front coil springs that received inadequate phosphorous coating, have low residual stress, or a combination of both.Surface imperfections resulting from coil-to-coil contact when the spring is compressed may lead to crack initiation.Exposure of the surface imperfections to road salts, in regions with heavy use of road salts for snow and ice control, may promote crack propagation in the spring that could result in spring fracture. If the coil spring fractures it may puncture the front tire and possibly the brake line while driving, which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.ODI's analysis of complaints it has received from the public (VOQ's) and Nissan complaint data submitted in response to the information request letter for PE15-019 identified a total of 468 non-duplicative reports alleging coil spring fractures in the subject vehicles, including 142 VOQ's and 367 Nissan complaints (41 of the incidents reported to ODI were also reported to Nissan). While the recall region accounts for approximately 43 percent of vehicle sales, the analysis found that 94 percent of the complaints involved vehicles sold or operated in those states.Approximately 27 percent of the VOQ's reporting coil spring failures in the recalled states indicated that the failure resulted in a punctured tire.ODI also identified one complaint that alleged brake line damage from a failed spring.Nissan's recall will replace both coil springs free of charge.Based on Nissan's safety recall, this investigation is closed. The 142 VOQ's referenced in this resume are: 10236143, 10405369, 10443746, 10452956, 10491553, 10497737, 10503060, 10504557, 10512390, 10512975, 10514582, 10516024, 10516085, 10521216, 10522261, 10526334, 10533856, 10537404, 10537407, 10548678, 10552124, 10559853, 10562485, 10565283, 10572591, 10578519, 10583059, 10583154, 10583496, 10583673, 10584979, 10585327, 10585377, 10585751, 10586397, 10586444, 10587798, 10588347, 10588427, 10592366, 10592498, 10592780, 10593373, 10593621, 10595215, 10596802, 10598404, 10598877, 10606859, 10606998, 10610082, 10618059, 10640845, 10644269, 10645075, 10649515, 10653189, 10659632, 10662158, 10663102, 10667071, 10667845, 10669949, 10670829, 10671894, 10676522, 10680544, 10680740, 10682397, 10691419, 10692629, 10693347, 10694156, 10694420, 10701250, 10702765, 10703126, 10704658, 10705882, 10706351, 10711805, 10712045, 10712922, 10714243, 10715041, 10715175, 10716106, 10717254, 10717320, 10717403, 10717412, 10717489, 10717563, 10720958, 10721782, 10721824, 10722113, 10722459, 10722915, 10723873, 10723972, 10723973, 10724158, 10724899, 10725002, 10725328, 10725377, 10725542, 10726251, 10726736, 10726741, 10730138, 10730154, 10730342, 10731050, 10731692, 10731799, 10731901, 10732054, 10732062, 10733059, 10733144, 10733309, 10733349, 10733607, 10733781, 10733854, 10735347, 10735353, 10735606, 10736199, 10736227, 10743474, 10743634, 10743790, 10744
