These records cover every 1994 Plymouth Grand Voyager. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
6 recalls name the 1994 Plymouth Grand Voyager. Newest first.
Vehicle description: MINI vans equipped with 2-spoke luxury wheels manufactured july 1992 through june 1993; or equipped with 4-spoke sport wheels manufactured from july 1992 through september 1993. the steering wheel armature stamping can crack and separate from the center hub attachment to the steering column.
If the steering wheel separates from the center hub attachment to the steering column, loss of control can occur increasing the risk of an accident.
Dealers will inspect the steering wheel for cracks and any wheels with cracks will be replaced. all other vehicles will have a reinforcement plate installed to prevent steering wheel separation in the event cracking occurs.
Vehicle description: MINI vans. the bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt IS loose, the gas strut IS over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles IS higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
Vehicle description: MINI vans. the wiring that initiates the driver and/or passenger air bag could electrically short circuit to ground. a short circuit to ground that exists immediately after turning the ignition key to the "on" or "start" position can cause the air bag(s) to inadvertently deploy.
Inadvertent air bag deployment can injure a front seat occupant.
Dealers will perform an electronic diagnostic check. any short circuits identified in either the driver's or passenger side air bag initiator wire circuit will be repaired.
Vehicle description: light duty passenger minivans without remote release. this IS not a safety recall. there has been no determination that a safety defect exists with the minivan latches. chrysler IS conducting a service campaign to replace the liftgate latch assembly of the affected minivans. in a collision, the rear liftgate latch assembly could…
If the liftgate latch opens, occupants can be ejected resulting in significantly increased risk of injury or death.
Chrysler dealers will replace the liftgate latch with a new stronger latch assembly without charge. chrysler began notifying owners of these vehicles beginning september 1995.

Chrysler will replace the liftgate latch with a new stronger latch assembly without charge. chrysler began notifying owners during december 1995.
Wheels with misformed lug nut seats were installed on these vehicles. This causes reduced nut to wheel contact area and limits the wheel self-centering capability during installation. This results in loss of wheel lug nut torque retention.
Loss of lug nut torque retention may lead to wheel lugfailure which may cause wheel separation and an accident.
Inspect the wheel assembly plant code; replace wheels known to have the problem and install new lug nuts.
My cruise control system does not work. I have checked all the fuses. They are all ok. When contacting several mechanic and reading on-line from other owners with similar problem, it IS commonly revealed that the air bag spring in the steering wheel may have gone bad which IS not uncommon. The vehicle, otherwise IS operable. I wonder if this revelation IS true, are there any other serious risks that could be associated with this.
TL* the contact owns a 1994 plymouth voyager. The contact stated that she had to replace the window shield wiper motor three times in a one year period. The contact found nhtsa recall campaign ID number: 99v189000 (visibility: windshield wiper/washer linkages), which dealt with the driver's side pivot assembly. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was informed that there was nothing that could be done to repair the problem. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 68,000. updated 8/8/12 *cn updated 08/14/12
TL* the contact owns a 1994 plymouth grand voyager. the contact was driving approximately 55 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle as it operated as normal. the failure began to recur intermittently so the vehicle was taken to various independent repair facilities where they were unable to diagnose the failure. the fuel pump was replaced but the failure continued to recur intermittently. the failure mileage was 200,000 and the current mileage was unavailable.
Vehicle handling degraded due to rear axle/beam failure. the handling of the minivan was significantly different. I inspected the vehicle and noticed the rear wheel had a significant negative camber when it has a solid rear axle/beam. I jacked the car up and inspected the rear / axle and beam and saw a near complete rust through of the rear axle/beam. the rust resulted in the rear axle bending upwards near the right rear wheel casting/hub. this in turn yielded the negative camber. the failure was caught prior to occurring while at normal speeds (55 mph). there IS no question that if this had failed at 55 mph it would have resulted in complete loss of control. the drivers side rear wheel assembly would have only been held on by a shock absorber and brake line. I have not yet finalize how to repair this but looking at the rear axle/beam assembly it will take a complete replacement of this assembly. I'D expect this to be a $2000 repair. I have detailed photographs and a report that I would be glad to forward. a major suspension component should not rust through to failure ever if it will result in loss of control. the dodge design connects the two rear wheels cast iron hubs via a thin walled tube. this thin wall tube keeps the rear wheels aligned and at the correct camber. this tube rusted through such that the main support tying the whole rear suspension together IS lost. this van spent several years in ny. I would say any dodge minivan running in the north east IS at a significant risk of this failure. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1994 plymouth grand voyager. the contact IS experiencing a leak in the fuel system next to the exhaust manifold. he took his vehicle to the local dealer and was informed that his vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign ID number 00v268000 (fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system). they replaced the fuel rail, but would not repair it with a free service charge. the current and failure mileages were 180,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 1994 plymouth grand voyager. while driving 4 mph, the rear driver side axle snapped. the vehicle shook violently and the contact heard a squealing noise right before the failure occurred. this IS the fourth time that the axle has been towed and repaired. the current mileage IS 115,000 and failure mileage was 110,000.
Fatigue cracking of the driver's side door hinge pillar around the hinge. the crack has progressed roughly 50% of the way around the hinge and will lead to complete separation of the hinge from the pillar without repair. this car has had no accidents. the incident date IS the approximate date the crack was first detected. *jb
Nhts campaign 99v189000 concerns a failure of windshield wiper linkages on 1993 plymouth voyagers leading to total loss of wiper function. this happened to my daughter today during a storm, forcing her to return home very slowly. no accident, no one hurt. (note that I am a registered professional engineer.) upon her return, I inspected and found that: 1. the wiper motor was running and could be audibly heard while the wipers sat motionless. 2. the two wipers were linked together and could be moved easily by hand. 3. the running wiper motor would not move the wipers. at that point I removed the 3 bolts holding the wiper motor in place and looked inside the wiper arm cavity. I found wiper drive arm to be detached from the rotating arm on the drive motor shaft. I have digital photographs available if you would like to see them. the reason for my report IS this: the van which this happened to IS a 1994 grand voyager, same body style as the 1993. how does one suggest that the 1994 model should also be recalled? regards, jeff box jeffbox@ieee.org. *nm
Consumer closed the sliding passenger door which has been difficult to open and close for some time, and currently it fell off. Also, when driving the automatic locks kept locking, and the bell kept going on. the interior lights flashed, and the door ajar light came on.*ak
Without warning the top hinge of the hydraulic lift of the tailgate snapped while I was driving. hydraulic "tube" was sent into the ceiling of the van, causing the interior and ceiling to have severe damage. hatch cannot be opened without removing hydraulic assembly.*ak
Car was recalled to correct air bag light malfunction, but presently the airbag light continued to come on, and it smelled as if something eletrical was burning. my radio went out, the interior lights wouldn't come on and the car simply wouldnot even turn over. the car was repaired, siting a fuse on 11/23/04. the smell of burning rubber or something electrical was noted , the interior lights went dim, lights appeared on dash, speed was reduced so rapidly it felt as if something has fallen from the bottom of vehicle. I believe that my instrument cluster panel IS shorting out due to this malfunction. please help me.*ak
While driving 70 mph, the vehicle was involved in a frontal collision. both frontal air bags failed to deploy and both frontal seat belts failed to lock. this caused the passenger to sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. the vehicle was towed to a garage. the cause has not been determined at this time. please provide further details. *Jb *tc
Plastic headlights get cloudy and significantly reduce light output and thus visibility during night time driving. I have experienced this with several chrysler corporation minivans and a nissan altima, however, a quick tour thru a parking lot will identify numerous car makes and models with clouded headlights. if the plastic can't be manufactured in a way that prevents it from getting cloudy or yellow, manufacturers should be required to use glass. *Ak
While driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the consumer was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic could not duplicate the problem. please provide further details. *jb
I was driving a group of students when I heard a loud explosion and lost all gears on my transmission. I stopped the vehicle, tried to put it in park and it kept rolling. The interior of the transmission had blown. At the same time, it blew out the starter and the main drive. If I can find a used or rebuilt transmission, it will cost me $1,000 for the transmission plus labor costs. Been searching 2 weeks with no luck. It's about time someone takes these reports seriously. An investigation needs to be started. I bought this van from my dad who replaced the transmission in 1999. It's 2004 and it needs replaced again.*ak
This IS in regards to the gen 3 seat belts I don't really have a complaint because nothing has happened to us in our vehicle, however, I feel that this IS an issue that needs further investigation. as an owner of a 1994 plymouth grand voyager, I am concerned for the safety of my family. *la
Cooling system fan broke because of the aluminum bracket that held it in place. The bracket was attached to a steel rod which caused too much stress and eventually resulted in the fan brackets breaking. this problem had occurred twice. *ak *ts *jb
The driver side airbag on our 1994 plymouth grand voyager deployed while driving at approx 30 mph. there was no collision, road bumps or anyother physical jarring of the vehicle. there was no cause for the airbag to deploy. the driver (my wife) sustained minor injuries (broken nose, cut lips and brusing) and she was able to stop the vehicle safely. fortunately she was not on a major highway. this was reported to chrysler, who has been very uncooperative and rude. the chrysler special investigations file number IS 11586772 (we have not heard from them).*ak
2 items of concern. the airconditioning unit has failed. we own a blue grand voyager minivan and the paint IS peeling from the roof and engine hood of the car. we have noticed many of the same color and year trucks, vans and cars with failing paint. a recall should happen. paint should not start peeling after 4 years of a cars life.*ak
Intermittently and ongone problem with ABS indicator light. Dealer notified. *Ak
While driving oil began to leak from the vehicle. *nlm
The transmission was replaced 3 times.*jb
Consumer called complaining about having problems with the transmission. Consumer also stated that the vehicles transmission has been replace three times. Dealer was contacted and stated that there IS nothing that they can do . *nlm
No failure on this vehicle I own a vehicle with gen 3 seat belts subject to a class action lawsuit, and I am reporting this to the nhtsa. dt
As I was driving the vehicle I noticed that the airbag light on the dash came on. Than later on I also noticed that my rear window wiper blade was not working. I was told by a friend that it could be a wiring problem that the manufacturer should replace. dt
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
Mr. Larry a. Sackey submitted a petition to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) by letter dated april 18, 2003, requesting that nhtsafurther investigate the defective collapsible steering shaft system on 1987-1995 vehicles manufactured by the daimlerchrysler corporation.in part because of 49 cfr ? 30120(G), nhtsa has decided to limit the scope of the petition vehicles to 1993-1995 models, excluding the 1993 jeep grand cherokee and 1994-1995 dodge RAM series trucks that were recalled (93v210 & 96v230) for steering column failure.if the analysis of these vehicles had identified a potential problem, the scope could have been expanded in an investigation.a review of odi's data base shows no recent complaints and a lack of a complaint trend concerning the subject issue on the subject vehicles as a whole or by individual models.therefore, the petition IS denied.for details, see federal register notice volume 68, no. 130, july 8, 2003.

Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi IS closing this investigation.
