On certain minivans, the driver's air bag may become disabled due to a failure of the clockspring, which IS located in the hub of the steering wheel.
This condition will manifest itself through illumination of the air bag warning lamp, and could eventually result in a driver's air bag open circuit, if the part IS not replaced in a reasonable amount of time.
Dealers will replace the clockspring assembly on all covered vehicles with 70,000 miles or less. for those vehicles with more than 70,000 miles, daimlerchrysler will offer an extended lifetime warranty under which it will replace the clockspring at no charge if it fails. daimlerchrysler will also reimburse owners who have paid to have the clockspring replaced on their vehicles. the recall began on october 12, 2004. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: MINI vans built with 3.3L and 3.8L engines have fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will install a seal on the vehicle fuel rails to prevent external leakage of fuel from the fuel rail crossover tube, should the existing o-rings continue to degrade. owner notification began on january 25, 2002. due to the large quantity of vehicles involved in this campaign, the owner notification will be phased over the next several months. however, if a vehicle IS leaking fuel from the o-rings, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: MINI vans built for fleet sales only. the headlamp module does not identify the park lamp as "drl" as requirement of fmvss 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
These vehicles do not comply with requirements of fmvss no. 108.
All fleet owners/operators will be mailed non-removable decals with the required "drl" letters.
Serpentine belt has jumped off tensioner 4 times in past 3 weeks under 2/WET and 2/ dry conditions. Replace tensionr and pully and belt
The rear brake line rusted thru, causing failure in braking.
Federal super steel tire 657, on the right rear, blew out at 70 miles an hour on the interstate, tread came apart, causing the van to spin around twice, into the median backwards, and smashed into the guardwire and support post. Broke the rear bumper, crushed in the tailgate, broke a tail light and crushed the metal below both tail lights. My wife and daughter were in the car at the time. tire had 30,000 miles on it, rotated as required and air pressure checked on all 4 tires in the morning of the day of the accident. Tire had only been on the car a year, but date of manufacture was 08 2004. blacks tire sold and installed the tire, wouldn't do crap about it, charged almost full price (pro rated, they claim), and tire manufacturer won't even comment or do anything about it.
The vehicle caught fire when I was about to leave my house, I had started it and then was about to put it in gear when it exploded, I had to jump out the passenger side and then there was another explosion followed by another.
I've purchased a 1999 grand voyager and noticed that the driver side strut tower was rotting out and the passenger side was starting to rust as well , but not to the degree as the drivers side.. I looked up and found no recall this situation, but was informed that chrysler ,plymouth , dodge , knew about this since 1996 but did nothing to correct it until 2001. I enjoy my vehicle but the repairs for this problem are a bit too much for me at this time due to my disability ,and the fact that I am on a very limited income. IS there any one that can assist me in getting my vehicle repair? *tr
There was a recall on this vehicle. I took it to a local dealer to be fixed. Had classic "no airbag, no horn, no cruise" symptoms. Dealer replaced airbag clockspring, but did not fix the problem of "no airbag". The dealer's stance IS "we don't troubleshoot, we only replaced the part." they let the vehicle leave their service department in an unsafe condition without notifying the customer of an issue, which was only discovered after the vehicle was picked up. Dealer refuses to replace clockspring, and insists on a diagnostic fee to troubleshoot an issue that I have already diagnosed myself. I ended up having to obtain a replacement clockspring on my own, and fit it to the vehicle. The airbag, horn, and cruise control now work on the vehicle. Chrysler refuses to do anything about it. *tr
While driving along at approximately 65 mph the gas gauge suddenly went from 1/4 to zero. In addition the tachometer went to zero , the temp gauge went to the off gauge and the speedometer went to 120 and stayed there. The ABS light also came on and stayed there. this IS a major safety defect and my research reveals that it IS a known problem and due to poor cold solder joints on the instrument cluster circuit board. multiple vehicle owners have reported this problem and many people have paid for repairs that they should not have had to pay for because of a defective printed circuit board problem. If the problem has been in existence since production it seems reasonable that the problem should be fixed at no cost to the vehicle owner. Not knowing vehicle speed, fuel level, engine temp IS a major hazard and an accident waiting to happen. *tr

Air bag light stays on and has since first purchased, horn has not worked for about 8 months, cruise control quit working 3 months ago. Reading other complaints it appears there was a recall stating the problem IS with the column clock spring. If I could receive a recall for the manufacturer to just provide a replacement column clock spring my nephew would place it on the van.
Van was bought privately in summer of 2008. During the first road trip with the voyager, the transmission went and was replaced with a rebuild transmission. In september of that same year, fuel pump and battery had to be replaced. Two months later, head gasket blew, was repaired but damage to engine was unknown. In winter of 2008, repeated problems with oil & brake fluid leaking out from calipers. Brakes always needed some type of work: pads, drums, bearings, calipers. in 2009, water pump had to be replaced, yet van still felt hotter then what it read. Exhaust started coming through the passenger side vents .it was repaired, but started again. Found hoses getting holes burnt through, and needed to be repaired. in 2010, replaced headlights, but night time illumination was still poor, even with high beams on. Battery needed to be jump started more & more, and an excessive amount of battery acid had to be removed from a terminal. The battery actually looked like it had been burnt. More leaks found caused by holes through hoses. Yet again, the water pump had to be replaced in july. then in october 2010, things got very scary, the serpentine belt fell off for the first time while driving about 10KM, while turning up into the driveway. I couldn't complete the turn due to the loss of power steering and was almost hit head on by oncoming traffic. The belt was put back on. 2 days later the belt fell off again, & again. Mechanic replaced belt and parts, drove around like crazy & thought problem was fixed. 6 weeks after, serpentine belt falls off again while driving at night, during a snow storm, on a canadian rocky mtn highway, with full electrical shut down of van, limited cell phone service, and our 4 small children. This incident was extremely unsafe, dangerous, scary, and expensive! 3 weeks later, head gasket blows again, and the van IS done.
Serpentine belt on 1999 plymouth grand voyager 3.8L has "jumped" off 4 times in the last year. usually happens under wet conditions. car has had to be towed multiple times. repairs attempted include replacing tensioner, belt and simple reassembling. *tr
While driving our 1999 plymouth grand voyager during a rain storm the vehicle lost power steering and began to overheat. the cause was found to be that the serpentine belt had slipped off of the pulley. belt was replaced and vehicle was driven home. this IS not the first occurrence of this failure. *Tr
TL* the contact owns a 1999 plymouth grand voyager. While driving approximately 10 mph, the air bag warning light briefly illuminated on the instrument panel and continued to do so intermittently. The contact received nhtsa recall campaign ID 04v480000 (air bags). The dealer did not repair the vehicle since the warranty was no longer valid. The failure continued to occur. The air bag service light remained illuminated at all times. The contact also stated that the horn would not function. When she was involved in a crash the air bags did not deploy upon impact. The contact didn't mention if there were any injuries. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 125,000.
1999 plymouth grand voyager expresso dash panel has flat lined and all service lights remain on. Tach, speedometer, fuel, temp, rear wiper, and mileage no longer work. Vehicle sometimes won't start. *Tr
Left side strut tower rusted through on 1999 plymouth voyager, I noticed this after we had bought it in 2005 and was told that it would not be covered from chrysler, found out that I was not the only one this had happened too, chrysler made the mistake and they should stand behind it, I was getting maintenance when it fell apart, lucky it didn't happen on the highway. *Tr
Rusting of strut towers on 1999 plymouth grand voyager. *Tr
Serpentine belt fell off after driving through large hidden puddle. Lost power steering and had close call negotiating around immediate curve ahead. Installed aftermarket gates kit designed to prevent belt slipping off. *Tr
Total brake failure while operating vehicle 1999 grand voyager I did research and it seems that this quite common. *Tr
The strut tower on my '99 plymouth grand voyager has rusted out on the drivers side. my dealer has informed me that it IS a safety issue and needs to be addressed right away. when looking on-line at this problem, many other people have the same issue. it seems that they should have a recall, or fix the problem. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 plymouth grand voyager. while driving approximately 35 mph in rainy weather conditions, the power steering failed. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and roadside assistance was called to the scene. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and the serpentine belt was replaced. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer again for the same failure. currently, the vehicle IS in the process of being repaired. the failure mileage was 152,000 and current mileage was 155,000.
Steel hydraulic brake line to rear brakes ruptured while driving (braking), resulting in complete loss of brake fluid and braking ability. inspection showed brake line was corroded through. rupture was located in solid tubing under vehicle, below driver's seat, where the brake line turned and headed towards rear of vehicle. vehicle was safely brought to a stop using parking brake. chrysler dealer service department replaced 4 rear brake lines, 2 flex lines, booster and master cylinder. the corroded tubing was replaced with flexible steel wrapped lines. from the invoice the parts replaced were: item description (followed by fp number) master cyl 5039003 (4683264); booster 5100002 (4797614); line tand 5062001 (4683291); tube junc 5062001 (4683696); tube junc 5062001 (4683697); bracket b 5057002 (4683441); fluid bra 1081006 (4318080-ab); line valv 5062001 (4683320); line valv 5062001 (4683321); lock brak 5057002 (2208893, quantity 2). total charge for parts, labor, tax = $1,547.31. *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The driver air bag clockspring can develop an open-circuit condition resulting in nonfunctional driver-side frontal air bag, horn, cruise control (if equipped), and/or steering wheel radio control (if equipped).in its october 5, 2004 letter to nhtsa, daimlerchrysler stated that it will conduct a safety recall and replace the clockspring assembly on all my 1998.5-2000 daimlerchrysler minivans, built between march 1998 and august 2000, with 70,000 miles or less.it will also provide a lifetime warranty for this component on my 1998.5-2000 minivans, regardless of mileage.the details of the corrective action are described in daimlerchrysler's letter (see recall no. 04V-480).the agency believes that further expenditure of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists with respect to those vehicles covered only by the lifetime warranty.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see page 2 for additional information.
Complaints report air bag warning light illuminates, and this may be accompanied with a non-functioning horn and/or cruise control (if equipped).this IS indicative of an open-circuit clockspring failure (results in non-functioning driver's air bag), similar to the failure condition that was the subject of daimlerchrysler's recall of model year 1996-1998.5 minivans (recall no. 02V-293).this recall query has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea04-013).
