On certain minivans, the driver's air bag may become disabled due to a failure of the clockspring, which IS located in the hub of the steering wheel.
This condition will manifest itself through illumination of the air bag warning lamp, and could eventually result in a driver's air bag open circuit, if the part IS not replaced in a reasonable amount of time.
Dealers will replace the clockspring assembly on all covered vehicles with 70,000 miles or less. for those vehicles with more than 70,000 miles, daimlerchrysler will offer an extended lifetime warranty under which it will replace the clockspring at no charge if it fails. daimlerchrysler will also reimburse owners who have paid to have the clockspring replaced on their vehicles. the recall began on october 12, 2004. owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Vehicle description: MINI vans built with 3.3L and 3.8L engines have fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will install a seal on the vehicle fuel rails to prevent external leakage of fuel from the fuel rail crossover tube, should the existing o-rings continue to degrade. owner notification began on january 25, 2002. due to the large quantity of vehicles involved in this campaign, the owner notification will be phased over the next several months. however, if a vehicle IS leaking fuel from the o-rings, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: passenger minivans equipped with integrated child seats. the shoulder harness restraint webbing was incorrectly routed around the metal reinforcement bar on these seats.
The child seat occupant may not be properly restrained in the event of a collision.
Dealers will inspect the routing of the shoulder belt webbing and any found incorrect will be properly routed.
I was driving and the whole dash panel went out, gas, speed , horn gauges
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. While driving at various speeds, the horn failed to function and the air bag light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the clock spring failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 04v480000 (air bags). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
At certain times the serpentine belt will slip off of the pulleys and quit powering the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. this can be worsened by rainy conditions. changing belt tensioner works for a year or two.
The dash panel dies and the ABS light turns on followed by the check engine light due to the computer throwing a code. I have removed the dash panel three times and found the problem IS at the female plug on the back of the panel, by using a wiggle test. The dealer wanted $250.00 for what they claimed only had on circuit panel when I knew better. It has two. I repaired it by using a strong zip tie to hold the plug up. This worked for years. Now it's the same old problem but it IS no longer on and off depending on the temp.of the inside of the vehicle. It IS 100% dead so now here I go again. Take the dash apart and try to get it to function. I use my gps for milage, speed, and fuel. That and a usb light made for a pc. I have delt with the faulty tenshioner and serpentine belt problem twice. Now it IS all the relays from heat burnt out. It started with the starter relay and went south. Tail lights and so on.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that while driving at 15 mph attempting to accelerate, the vehicle failed to accelerate. In addition, the fuel gauge gave an incorrect reading. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed that there was fuel spewing from the fuel rail. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel rail needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 00v268000 (fuel system, gasoline) however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 241,338.
Brake line to rear brakes above fuel tank ruptured and lost all brake fluid
Driving to store. Weather was clear ~ 85 degrees f, road was clear, no rain, time approximately 10PM. while driving, I moved into the center lane (major road, three lanes both ways) for a turn to the store, during my turn to the left, I noticed that my power steering was not functioning and very hard to control/steer the vehicle. after struggling to straighten out my van (1998 plymouth, grand voyager SE) I noticed that my engine temperature had gone off scale / over heating. at this point I stopped the van in the middle of traffic. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. While driving approximately 30 mph, the steering failed without warning and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact had to maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road. When the hood was opened, the contact discovered that the driving belt was out of the pulley. The belt was placed back into position. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. while driving 60 mph on a major highway, the vehicle stalled multiple times. the fuel gauge failed to read properly and the instrument panel cluster malfunctioned. in addition, the power locks and windows failed to operate and the interior dome light failed the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that she smelled fuel coming from the vehicle. Also, the contact mentioned that the instrument panel failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump module assembly and instrument cluster assemblies needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 06e091000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 77,000. *tr
Computer failing to send signal to fan relay. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth voyager. The contact stated that the serpentine belt would detach whenever the vehicle was driven while raining. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there was nothing that could be done due to the design of the vehicle. The vin was not available. The failure mileage and current mileage was unknown.
I purchased vehicle used and found no problems with the vehicle with the exception of a squeaky serpentine belt. Put a little belt dressing on it and that was as far as the issue went. Then on a dark rainy night, went through a rain puddle-very slowly, and instantly, steering became very difficult. The worst part of this experience this night was trying to put belt back on pulleys, as you can imagine in the dark and no idea how to route it. Thank goodness there was a diagram in engine. With no knowledge that this was a very well known issue with these vehicles it was quite a surprise. After researching this online, and reading all of the consumer complaints I can't figure out what you people are waiting for!! Fatal accidents!! There has been more than enough info submitted and documented to warrant a recall and have the manufacturer take care of this. Oh-but guess what? Another company 'gates" has come up with a solution that apparently has had positive reviews. My order IS in and I am awaiting my retrofitted tensioner belt component kit so that I will feel safe enough to be out on the roads and that I will not become a hazard to other drivers on the road with me. The federal government comes to the aid of a big company like chrysler (plymouth) even when it IS more than obvious that they are building substandard cars. This IS not a major repair, but it IS certainly a problem that could very easily cause serious bodily injuries to many people from just one incident! It has now been fourteen years since this car was manufactured. How many years of complaints does it take to get someone to notice and take action? IS there someone above you that we have to beg, please help us! The little guys. Why should we have to beg, "please don't let my car be the one that IS going to kill someone."make the ones responsible-be responsible! Thank you (i think). *tr
Ok I didn't know how else to put this but to say that when raining this van and the funny part IS that when driving during weather conditions (i.e. Rain snow) the micro v belt slips off and makes the van hard to drive and may in time if not already cause and accident the first time it happened to us we went though a small puddle of water on an on ramp from one free way to another and the van became unstable and hard to steer we had a 11 and a 2 year old in this van and now it doesn't matter when we drive in the rain it happens I have been told that there IS a fix but the kit IS over 200 dollars and IS next to impossible for people to fix this on fixed incomes to this day we still deal with it but something should be done about it with chrysler and after doing a search on just google alone I found 1500-5000 different compliance on this one problem. *tr
Found the driver side strut tower IS completely rusted out. discovered online hundreds of complaints of same on the same vehicle and date range. plymouth chrysler know about this and describes it as cosmetic but this IS a structural problem. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that the serpentine belt would detach from the vehicle whenever it would rain. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the tension pulley needed replacing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 219,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact's vehicle was crashed into from the rear. The front driver and passenger side seats fractured, throwing the driver and passenger into the dash board. The seat then moved backward independently. The air bags did not deploy. The driver and passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The driver sustained neck, shoulder, back, hip and knee injuries. the passenger sustained injuries to the neck, shoulder, back, hip and a bruised hernia. The police reported to the scene and a report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Driving down road and all of sudden my guages go out on instrument panel-speedometer,fuel,temp, etc. it goes out and comes on whenever it wants to- I do a lot of traveling and rely on mileage re-imbursement but I get none cause my odometer and tripometer go out also, sometimes to never come on for a week or two. *tt
TL* the contact owned a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. The contact stated that the driver inserted the key into the ignition and turned it into the accessory position when the air bags deployed. The driver sustained injuries to the arms, chest and wrist. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that there was water intrusion, which could have caused the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and determined that it was not mechanical. The insurance company decided that the failure was mechanical, and classified the vehicle as being destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 63,800.
Tl*the contact owns 1998 plymouth grand voyager. the contact stated the air bag light was illuminated indicating that the air malfunctioned. the contact reviewed nhtsa campaign number 04v480000 (air bag) and notified the manufacturer. the manufacturer stated the vin was not a part of the recall. the contact was concerned that the air bag could deploy without a warning. The failure mileage was 176,000.
I have a 1998 plymouth grand voyager with the 3.3L moter, every time the van goes through a puddle of water the drive belt comes off. the problem has been around for a long time, what has to be done IS the belt tenser and pullys need to be changed to fix the problem. the dealership refuses to fix the problem. *tr
Dashboard instrument panel keeps coming on and going off, ABS light comes on then the instrument panel goes off. Speed IS unknown, amount of gas IS unknown, oil, etc. This IS ridiculous in the fact that so many have been complaining about it and the company still hasn't recalled the vehicles to have this issue fixed. Yes I may have a 1998 plymouth voyager, but I don't feel that because of the incompetence that this company has that I should have to shell out money to have it figured out and repaired. I understand normal wear and tear but this IS not normal (for other vehicles, obviously very normal for this one in general). The strangest thing IS, if the vehicle IS warmed up from the sun, the panel seems to work, the majority of the time, where I live it doesn't work, and I have to guesstimate everything. How IS this safe?!?! *Tr
We own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager with a 3.3 liter engine. On friday, october 1,2010, my wife drove slowly through a puddle and the serpentine belt came off causing a loss of power steering and other system powered by the serpentine belt. This has happened to her once before and from what I have read on the internet IS a very common problem with these vehicles. My wife usually enjoys driving her van but now has lost all confidence in it. She states it's a very scary situation, not to mention dangerous. With all I have read it IS almost impossible to believe there has not been a recall to have this very dangerous situation corrected. *Tr
Randomly a short circuit in the instrument cluster has developed in the 1998 plymouth grand voyager. When this occurs, the dash board remains illuminated but the gauges do not function(speed, rpm, gear, temp, etc) and the vehicle doses not communicate to the transmission and the vehicle does not shift into overdrive gear. The brakes and airbag will illuminate on dash. The computer codes and reads ecm failure. Twice taken to dealership don drennan hoover al. *tr
I own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager SE. my gauges (gas, temp, rpm, and gear indicator) are all out. in reading online, this seems to be a problem with other people as well. I have to use a gps to be able to tell how fast I'm going. I've twice ran out of gas while going down the highway because I can't tell how much fuel I have remaining. *Tr
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The driver air bag clockspring can develop an open-circuit condition resulting in nonfunctional driver-side frontal air bag, horn, cruise control (if equipped), and/or steering wheel radio control (if equipped).in its october 5, 2004 letter to nhtsa, daimlerchrysler stated that it will conduct a safety recall and replace the clockspring assembly on all my 1998.5-2000 daimlerchrysler minivans, built between march 1998 and august 2000, with 70,000 miles or less.it will also provide a lifetime warranty for this component on my 1998.5-2000 minivans, regardless of mileage.the details of the corrective action are described in daimlerchrysler's letter (see recall no. 04V-480).the agency believes that further expenditure of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists with respect to those vehicles covered only by the lifetime warranty.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see page 2 for additional information.
Complaints report air bag warning light illuminates, and this may be accompanied with a non-functioning horn and/or cruise control (if equipped).this IS indicative of an open-circuit clockspring failure (results in non-functioning driver's air bag), similar to the failure condition that was the subject of daimlerchrysler's recall of model year 1996-1998.5 minivans (recall no. 02V-293).this recall query has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea04-013).
