11 recalls name the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager. Newest first.
On certain MINI vans, the clockspring assembly may have been wound incorrectly during the vehicle assembly process.
This condition will manifest itself through illumination of the air bag warning lamp, and could eventually result in a driver's air bag open circuit, if the part IS not replaced in a reasonable amount of time.
Dealers will replace the clockspring assembly on all vehicles with 70,000 miles or less. an extended lifetime warranty will also be placed on this component for all affected vehicles, regardless of mileage. daimlerchrysler will also reimburse owners who have paid to have the clockspring replaced on their vehicles. owner notification began november 18, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: MINI vans built with 3.3L and 3.8L engines have fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will install a seal on the vehicle fuel rails to prevent external leakage of fuel from the fuel rail crossover tube, should the existing o-rings continue to degrade. owner notification began on january 25, 2002. due to the large quantity of vehicles involved in this campaign, the owner notification will be phased over the next several months. however, if a vehicle IS leaking fuel from the o-rings, the vehicle should be taken into a dealer to have this repaired as soon as possible. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
Vehicle description: minivans. fuel can leak from the fuel tank at the interface of the fuel pump module attachment.
If a fuel leak occurs in the presence of an ignition source, a fire could occur.
Dealers will replace the fuel pump module attaching nut with a nut that includes tighter design tolerances. the sealing o-ring will also be replaced.
Vehicle description: MINI vans equipped with integrated child seats. the shoulder harness restraint on the integrated child seat can become difficult to extract when the safety belt latch plate becomes contaminated.
This can cause difficulty in releasing a child from the restraint.
Dealers will clean the latch mechanism. an extender will be added to the emergency release anchor for the child seat safety belts so that the release clips are more visible and accessible to the operator in the event that the retractor mechanism can not be unlocked. in addition, an instructional owner's manual supplement card will be provided.
Vehicle description: multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with integral child seats. this IS not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. however, it IS deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. on the integral child seat, the shoulder belts restraining the child retract and lock in place after the belt buckle IS…
The latch plate located in the seat cushion area must be free to move back against its stop after the buckle IS removed to allow the shoulder belts to be pulled out. always be sure the area around the latch plate IS free of food or other items that might prevent the latch plate from moving back.
Owners are being provided with a video tape and 2 harness clips. the video tape instructs owners on the proper use and maintenance of the child seats.
The bolts which secure the integrated child seat modules to the seat frame can break.
In the event of a vehicle accident, the child seat may not provide adequate protection to the occupant.
Dealers will replace the integrated child seat module bolts.
A static electric charge can build up on the ungrounded metal section of the fuel filler tube.
This condition could cause a spark to occur when fueling the vehicle and possibly ignite the fuel vapors.
Dealers will install a ground strap for the fuel filler tube.
In certain vehicles, the engine cylinder head oil galley plug does not seal properly and engine cylinder head oil IS not adequately retained.
Inadequate sealing and retention of the plug can result in oil leakage which could cause a fire in the engine compartment.
Dealers will install an expansion plug and retaining bracket over the cylinder head oil galley plug.
The fuel tank rollover valve can allow fuel to pass into the vapor canister resulting in the potential for fuel leakage.
Fuel leakage increases the potential for a vehicle fire.
Dealers will replace the fuel tank filler tube with a filler tube that has an additional rollover valve. The associated rollover valve vapor hoses will be rerouted.
The bolts which secure the rear bench seats to the seat risers may be embrittled and fracture.
In case of an accident, the bolt may fail and can cause the seat to break away from the seat risers, which increases the potentialof injury to its occupants.
Dealers will replace the rear bench seat to riser bolts.
Chrysler dealers will replace both child seat assemblies with revised seats containing retractor improvements. The revised seats will also increase child comfort by incorporating protective seat belt wraps to prevent belt chafe.
Affected component: body control module the bcm controls the following: wipers, fuel pump, vehicle power and much more. during a rainy day in oregon ciry oregon, the bcm failed. the car was moving into a parking lot at less than 20 mph. in the parking lot was a police vehicle. when the bcm failed, the vehicle lost fuel pressure and therefore engine power then power braking, power steering and the wiper control went erradic. I managed to get the vehicle stopped, narrowly missing the police vehicle. I had no power brakes, no power steering, and the wipers stopped. the bcm was to blame. had this occurred at highway speeds, I don't like to think what may have happened!!!
While driving at any speed (around 65 miles) my vehicle suddenly shutdown without warning due to fuel pump. I haven't fixed yet. And it has a electrical problems too. *tr
Engine would start and run a few seconds and then go dead. Engine would restart and run very rough for a few seconds and continue to go dead. Eventually engine would not start. Checked power at coil and there would be power for a second when switch was turned on and then auto shutdown relay clicks and power IS lost to coil. Replaced crank sensor and put a computer from same model van in and still will not start. No codes on scan tool. There IS fuel pressure on the fuel rail. *tr
Tl*the contact owned a 1996 plymouth grand voyager. While driving in reverse approximately 1 mph he smelled an odor of gasoline and the vehicle engulfed into flames. The fire began underneath the hood of the vehicle. the fire department extinguished the flames. the vehicle was destroyed and towed to an insurance lot. The failure was not diagnosed and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 160,000. updated 01/14/11*lj
Rusted strut towers on 1996 plymouth grand voyager front strut popped through almost crashed other complaint number found on internet probably a lot more 10090457. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1996 plymouth grand voyager. the contact stated that he has experienced computerized antilock brake failure several times. he replaced the computerized antilock brakes three times. recently, in december of 2007, the contact experienced the failure while driving 55 mph on the highway. there was no braking power, but he was able to coast the vehicle off the road. the vehicle has not been repaired. the dealer estimated that the repair would cost $4,000. the current and failure mileages were 78,000.
1996 plymouth grand voyager had an engine fire due to a leaking fuel rail - investigation revealed the rail was under an open recall that was never fixed and I never received notice of it. *Tr
1. Purchased used 1996 plymouth grand voyager in 2006. 2. Over 3 month period in 2006-7, drivers side seat back welds began to break as seat back was adjusted for normal driving. Drivers weight was under 200 lb. Seat not reclined or excessive weight placed on back. All welds finally broke. 3. Used nylon strap to hold up seat back until frame could be rewelded. observation - right front seat had been repaired in similar fashion before vehicle was purchased. This was not revealed at time of sale. potential injury/death if in accident or if seat had failed in critical driving situation. *Tr
My wife was driving my 1996 plymouth grand voyager and the left cv shaft support bearing broke off the differential. *tr
My transmission ,my starter, air con.,brakes, driver side window, belt, & pulley all have had to have work done on it but now I cant drive my van because of the transmission & I've only had my van since 03/21/2008. *tr
My husband was driving our van, and he got into a fender bender and was only going 4 to 5 mph, and he lightly hit a pole due to sun glare, and it did not make a impact at all , and both air bags popped out, and I was injury badly. The dashboard that was covering the airbag flew off, and cut my head open, and the bag fractured my nose, and my whole top part of my body IS sore and bruised. The air bags went off 30 seconds after the accident, and was very late. I could have been killed. My husband IS bruised and very sore from the bag hitting him on the chest. *tr
Failure of front strut towers on a 1996 plymouth grand voyager found upon vehicle inspection (safety issue). no incident occurred and the corrective action to be taken IS the replacement of both front strut towers. old part would be available if you request me to keep them. please advise. *tr
Smell of gas after driving for about 20 min. Lead to a pop sound from under vehicle. Smoke filled the inside of the van and after I brought it to a stop on a median the vehicle was engulfed in flames before I managed to exit. After exiting the vehicle and having the fire put out soon on with use of a fire extinguisher I noticed the evap canister had dropped all of its charcoal. Possible that gas was being directed into this canister and when it popped the fumes and gas ignited from the exhaust system. *jb
While driving, vehicle would stall for no apparent reason, at various speeds, the gauges dropped to zero, looked like vehicle was turned off. Taken vehicle to mechanic & he could not locate the problem.*ak
I took my 1996 plymouth grand voyager to my mechanic to help me locate a creaking noise in the front of the van. we finally figured out that it was the sway bar. but what we also discovered was the tower mount (that connects the strut to the body frame) was severely rusted. the rest of the body has very little rust. my mechanic contacted several dealerships to find out about a repair kit for this problem, learned that these dealerships are having the same problem with their courtesy vans. because the tower mount IS such an integral part of the working of the vehicle, I feel that this IS a safety issue. there should be no way that water can get up and stay in the tower mount and cause the mount to rust out. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while having a state inspection performed on the vehicle, the repair shop technician determined the vehicle did not have a check engine light. the manufacturer was alerted.
Incident 1. driving down the highway at 65 mph and the engine quits. pull over, after 20 min the van starts and drives fine for about a month. incident 2. driving down the highway at 55 mph and the engine quits. pull over, wait 20 min. The van starts and drives fine for about a month. incident 3. driving down the highway going 65 mph and the engine quits. Pull over and wait 20 min. the van starts and drives fine for 7 months. all these incidents happened in the hot summer months. *nm
1996 plymouth grand voyager SE rusted strut tower. went to check my oil level and could not believe how bad the strut towers where rusted I could push down on front fenders and watch the struts push the surrounding metal up so I typed in google search engine 1996 plymouth grand voyager SE rusted strut tower and to my surprise a lot of other people have this flaw in there vans to I cant believe I was driving my kids in this van with this problem I think the band aid that chrysler IS offering IS pathetic this problem should be fixed right and not at consumers cost please push chrysler to take care of there fault on this issue. *nm
Strut towers are rusting and pose a safety risk of crash and/or rollover when struts eventually break loose from the strut towers. *jb
Dt: when starting vehicle the radio did not come on , but the air bag light came on and stayed on. However, and the dash board lights did not come on. Had to restart the vehicle in order to get the radio to work, the air bag light to go off, and the dashboard lights to register. This happened on june 2, 2005. *Ak
Like sed befor on a few other complants I have a 96 plymounth grand voyager SE and my strut towers are rusting out at a fast pase and IS very un safe to be driving these vans with this problem... Strut tower failur can lead to crash and death if at highway speed buy causing defent roleover this problem shuld be fixed imeadetly by dcx
The air bag light stayed on. As a result, the horn did not work. A recall for the clock spring was issued, however, this vehicle's year was not included. consumer stated vehicle was unable to pass inspection. *Ak *nm
Consumer stated windshield wipers worked intermittently. Consumer had some calls with being in an accident because the windshield wipers failed during rainstroms. *Ak
During some regular maintenance my repair shop noticed that the strut towers in my 1996 plymouth grand voyager were badly deteriorated and the the struts were in danger of pushing through the top of the tower and consequently the hood. This situation would have rendered the vehicle uncontrollable and presented a dangerous situation if i, or my children, was on the highway. if not hidden under the hood I would have noticed it some time ago, long before the warranty expired. Also this kind of structural failure should not occur in a vehicle this young and IS indicative of a design fault. chrysler has issued a tsb number 23-044-02 acknowledging this problem and has a repair kit for it. Clearly they are aware of the problem and uninterested in helping people with a design flaw that takes many years to develop. They will not help customers who have bought a defective product unless your agency forces them to address this issue and I urge you to do so.*ak
Severly rusted strut tower on my 1996 plymoth grand voyager. After investigating the problem, I have found that numerous complaints have been filed. There was a recall on the 1998 and 2000 grand voyagers with the same exact problem. Estimated repair $4500.00. *Ak

This investigation IS closed.chrysler corporation has submitted a defect information report identifying a safety defect and outlining the proposed remedy.recall number 98v-185 has been assigned to this safety recall.
This engineering analysis was opened on january 31, 1997 based on information gathered during preliminary evaluation (pe), pe96-051. The pe was opened on august 19, 1996, to investigate allegations of fuel leakage from the area where the fuel pump/sending unit joins the fuel tank.for brevidy, this area will be referred to as the pump/tank interface.these allegations were first received by odi on august 2, 1996 while investigating allegations of chrysler minivan throttle shaft hand-up, and uncontrolled engine speed, in pe96-036.while discussing that issue with a fleet, it was alleged that at least 10(out of 40) 1996 early production chrysler minivans leaked fuel from the pump/tank interface.analysis of the complaint and warranty data indicate fuel tank leakage incidents in the subject vehicles predominatly affected early production vehicles.the data involving confirmed incidents of tank/pump interface leaks suggest that those failures have been declining since july 1996.odi has received no reports of the subject condition involving original equipment pumps and tanks since september, 1997.currently this isssue does not reqresent a continuing field concern.odi will continue to monitor the subject vehicles for fuel leaks of any type.a safety related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resoured does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
Odi continues to receive complaints alleging latching/retractor mechanism problems.chrysler's assessment of the problem indicates that owners of the vehicles are not adhering to the cleaning requirements for the seat.the seat appears to malfunction if crumbs of food or beverage residue accumulates on the latching tongue in thewell located between the child's legs.odi has 19 complaints of retract lockup.seven of these complaints report cutting the straps to remove the child.two of the seven consumers allege the child was choking.chrysler reports 60 owner/field reports which indicated 19 harnesses were cut to remove the children.additional information IS needed to fully assess the safety consequence of the alleged defect and to evaluate the chrysler corporation's rational for not conducting a safety recall campaign.
Analysis to date indicates that some of the subject vehiclescontinue to experience fuel leaks from the fuel tank at the sending unit interface.most often the leak involves the o-ring seal.
