Vehicle description: minivans. the left hand windshield wiper pivot drive arm was not mechanically staked to the pivot shaft.
This could allow the drive arm to disengage from the shaft leading to a loss of wiper function. the driver's visibility would be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the left hand side windshield wiper pivot assembly.
Vehicle description: passenger mini-vans. covers on the solid stalk mounted seat belt buckles can become dislodged causing the release button to stick inside the cover. the buckle would then be only partially latched.
In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Dealers will install a cover retaining clip to the stalk mounted buckle cover to prevent dislocation of the buckle cover.
Vehicle description: passenger mini-vans. The center rear seat, right outboard side, safety belt anchor hook can become unattached from the body anchor position.
In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Dealers will replace the anchor hook retaining clip with a revised profile clip and a cover plate.
The bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt IS loose, the gas strut IS over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles IS higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
The steering wheel armature stamping can crack and separate from the center hub attachment to the steering column.
If the steering wheel separates from the center hub attachment to the steering column, loss of control can occur increasing the risk of an accident.
Dealers will inspect the steering wheel for armature cracks in the center hub attachment area. any steering wheels showing cracks will be replaced. all other vehicles will have a reinforcement plate installed to prevent steering wheel separation in the event cracking occurs.
The ABS hydraulic control unit can experience excessive brake actuator piston seal wear causing pump-motor deterioration.
If this condition occurs, the ABS function could be lost and reduced power assist would be experienced during vehicle braking increasing the potential for a vehicle accident.
Dealers will test the vehicle's anti-lock brake system and repair the vehicles if necessary. Also the warranty on all ABS components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). Owners will also be reimbursed for previous ABS component repair costs.

If the liftgate latch opens, occupants can be ejected resulting in significantly increased risk of injury or death.
Chrysler dealers will replace the liftgate latch with a new stronger latch assembly without charge. chrysler began notifying owners of these vehicles in october 1995.

If the liftgate latch opens, occupants can be ejected resulting in significantly increased risk of injury or death.
Chrysler dealers will replace the liftgate latch with a new stronger latch assembly without charge. chrysler began notifying owners of these vehicles in march 1996.
Fuel tank flanges were not bent as required to allow the specified clearance for the fuel tank mounting straps and fuel lines at the tank.
The unbent flanges to the fuel tank will damage themounting straps and/or fuel lines. The damaged mounting straps may break causingthe tank to drop and the damaged fuel line will leak fuel. In either case a firecould result if the spilled fuel IS exposed to an ignition source.
Repair the flange by bending to the correct angle; replace damaged fuel lines and mounting straps.
The zinc plating operation performed on the upper steering column shaft coupling bolt caused hydrogen embrittlement and breakage of the bolt.
Fractures of the upper steering column shaft couplingbolt result in a lack of coupling load on the shaft and loss of steeringcontrol.
Replace the zinc plated bolt with a phosphate plated bolt.

My vehicle brake light came on along with the anti lock light. I could hear a hum noise under the hood at the braking unit. Brake pedal got very hard and had to use both feet along with putting the vehicle into neutral to slow down and stop! Braking ABS system was replaced because of same failure 07/2009. Now being told no dealer has the equipment to test that system and chrysler corp told me there IS no warranty on those parts! I was told last time it was replaced that the pump/motor unit was warranted as long as I own the vehicle and all other parts of that unit extended warranty of 100,000 miles. Vehicle has been sitting the last three years! just decided to drive it again 11/2014. Can go out and drive it right now and everything works fine. But brakes give out at anytime, although the brake light no longer comes on! Seems once that system gets too hot the brakes fail. Let it sit for a day or two and it works again! Right now I can't get it tested. Everyone says they can't do it. Last dealer that did replaced the unit had me bring the vehicle there again. Then called me and said they had good news and bad news. Good news was they had the part. Bad news they couldn't test the system for go ahead from chrysler to replace it. Chrysler today said sorry, and hope we can be of service to you in the future! Now what? ps- since talking to chrysler after contacting them again, that dealer now says they don't even have the part anymore! After being asked by chrysler how do they have the part in stock but can't test the system! *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1992 chrysler town and country. While traveling at any speed, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact had to exert extreme force in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ABS hydraulic unit needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1992 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, he attempted to stop the vehicle but the brake pedal became extrememly hard to depress. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic ). The failure recurred threee times after the original repair. The manufacturer was notified but stated that they would not cover the repair costs after the third failure. The failure mileage was 20,000.
TL* the contact owns a 1992 chrysler town and country MINI van. The contact was driving 35 mph when the ABS warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. As the contact started the vehicle, she discovered that the brakes had seized and the vehicle would not move. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle, and provided no further assistance. The failure and the current mileage was 106,667. The serpentine belt falls off of my 1992 chrysler town and country whenever I go through a puddle... No matter how fast or slow I go. when the belt comes off everything goes, including the powersteering-not a good thing when its raining and the roads are already slick. I called my local chrysler dealer and was told that though there IS a fix for newer vehicles they don't make one for mine. I've tried replacing the belt, the pulleys, the tensioner, and nothing helps. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1992 chrysler town and country. the contact IS experiencing failure with the bendix-10 antilock brake system on his vehicle. in 1997, his vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign ID number 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the pump motor assembly was given a lifetime warranty at that time. the failures have resurfaced and chrysler stated that the brakes were previously replaced and there was no lifetime warranty; therefore, they would not re-honor the recall. the failure mileage was 149,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 1992 chrysler town and country. the ABS light illuminated. the brakes became very stiff and the brake pedal had to be depressed down to the floor. the vehicle was repaired, but, immediately afterwards, the ABS light illuminated again. the brakes were working properly. in may of 2007, the brakes became difficult to depress again, which made it nearly impossible to stop the vehicle. nhtsa campaign ID number 96v099000 (service brakes:hydraulic: antilock) was referenced. the powertrain was unknown. the current mileage was 230,000 and failure mileage was 219,000.
I own a 1992 chrysler with anti-lock brakes covered by nhtsa campaign ID 96v099000. It has 93,000 miles & chrysler has refused to pay for covered repairs under the above listed campaign. The vehicle has been out of service numerous times for brake problems & they have refused to cover the last repair for approx $500. According to your odi listing, all ABS components are covered to 100,000 miles. The servicing dealer has told me & the chrysler consumer representative that the repair should be covered & was covered by them at one time, but they have refused to cover the replacement of the ABS actuator on my vehicle. The chrysler ref# for my inquiry to them IS 15951884. *jb
The ABS on my 1992 chrysler town & country failed august 2006. our mechanic advised my husband that the ABS pump motor assembly and brake actuator piston assembly had failed, but that he believed that the ABS on the vehicle was covered by a lifetime warranty due to a recall. however, chrysler at first lied to us that there was no recall. after paying over a $1,000 to have the repair done, the parts failed a second time. this time, my husband went to the nhtsa website and found that there was in fact a recall~96v099000~ for this problem. he called daimler-chrysler today at 1-800-853-1403. he was told this time that 'yes, there was a recall, but that the information on your website was in error and that there was no lifetime coverage.' my husband then contacted the mechanic and obtained an alldata report that contained the chrysler service bulletin #685. the service bulletin not only has information that shows how to diagnose and repair the defective parts, but it also had a letter that chrysler supposedly sent to all vehicle owners. this letter states in part, "if problems with these components are found at any time during the entire life of your vehicle, chrysler will replace these components free of charge." my husband called daimler-chrysler a second time at the above number and even after reading the letter to the customer service representative contained in chrysler's own bulletin #685, he was told that daimler-chrysler had no obligation whatsoever to make the required repairs as there was no lifetime coverage. it was again suggested by chrysler that your agency erred in stating that there IS lifetime coverage and that my husband could not be reading the letter in the bulletin correctly and refused to honor the lifetime coverage provisions in your recall. *nm
Consumer was charged for a recall item on 1992 town and country. *Kb the dealer did not have the parts available to repair the ABS recall (96v099000 ). the part was ordered and the consumer was charged $75. the part was scheduled to arrive july 1, 2006 but to date the part has not arrived. *nm
Continuing ABS failure, I have had the ABS repaired several times under warranty, but the ABS system keeps failing. Now music city dodge IS telling me there IS contamination in the system and every thing in the brake system needs to be replaced to the tune of $3000.00. I can't see how this IS correct considering they are the only ones who have worked on the brakes.*jb
Recall campaign 97v079000 concerning liftgate support bracket. Owner took vehicle to the dealer for recall repairs, and had the work done. However, the defect had not been repaired properly. vehicle was back to the dealer on three occasions . They installed the screws to hold it on, and the screws kept falling out.*ak
Vehicle had no brakes. Dealer stated the wiring harness burned, and they could not repair the vehicle. Manufacturer insisted that consumer should cover the cost to repair the harness in order to determine the defectiveness of the brakes pump motor. *ak
The main serpentine belt of our 1992 chrysler town & country flies off when your driving when there IS a little water or snow on the road while driving down the road. when this happens--driving becomes very difficult (no power steering available then). it takes a while to get it fixed. I've been stranded quite a few times because of this problem. I have a friend with the same kind of van and has the same problem. *nm
When depressing the brakes brake pedal pulsated. This caused the vehicle to have extended stopping distance. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection. However, the mechanic was not able to duplicate the problem. *Ak
ABS braking system totally failed. *ph *la
While driving 35 mph driver smelled smoke. driver attempted to slow down to get to the side of the vehicle, but vehicle had no brake power. driver got the vehicle to the side of the road without incident. vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that accumulator and antilock brake pump failed, and had to be replaced. *Ak
Problems the brakes on the 1992 chrysler town and country.*mr the vehicle had a recall in 1996, for the brakes and traction control, as well as the ABS piston pump and the ABS hydraulic control unit. the same problems that occurred then are occurring now. The consumer feels that the vehicle IS a danger and chrysler has not done their job in fixing the vehicle.* cb *jb
While driving at 70 mph driver's side rear tire sidewall exploded. the driver was able to pull over to the shoulder, and had vehicle towed to the dealer, who replaced the tire. michelin, MX, 215/65r16985, dot #be376fg. *ak

After an extensive investigation and analysis, chrysler has identified the defect as a fatigue failure, origination in the heat affected region of the projection welds of the steering wheel hub to steering wheel armature attachment.the hub IS the portion of the steering wheel assembly that connects it to the steering column shaft and IS attached to the underside of the steering wheel assembly by 4 welds.if cracks develop in the heat affected region of the welds and propagate through the steering wheel armature to each of the welds, the steering wheel can separate from the hub.this IS a slow progressive failure which normally occurs at high mileage.in some cases complainants have reported a looseness or wobbling of the steering wheel prior to separation.to remedy this defect, chrysler will inspect the steering wheels of the affected vehicles for cracks in the hub area.if any cracks are found, the steering wheel will be replaced.all other vehicles will have reinforcing plates installed which would prevent a steering wheel separation should cracking occur.

Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi IS closing this investigation.
