Risk and remedy
Risk
If the steering wheel separates from the center hub attachment to the steering column, loss of control can occur increasing the risk of an accident.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the steering wheel for cracks and any wheels with cracks will be replaced. all other vehicles will have a reinforcement plate installed to prevent steering wheel separation in the event cracking occurs.
Vehicle description: MINI vans. the bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt IS loose, the gas strut IS over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles IS higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.

Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
Vehicle description: minivans. the left hand windshield wiper pivot drive arm was not mechanically staked to the pivot shaft.

This could allow the drive arm to disengage from the shaft leading to a loss of wiper function. the driver's visibility would be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the left hand side windshield wiper pivot assembly.
Vehicle description: MINI vans. the wiring that initiates the driver and/or passenger air bag could electrically short circuit to ground. a short circuit to ground that exists immediately after turning the ignition key to the "on" or "start" position can cause the air bag(s) to inadvertently deploy.

Inadvertent air bag deployment can injure a front seat occupant.
Remedy
Dealers will perform an electronic diagnostic check. any short circuits identified in either the driver's or passenger side air bag initiator wire circuit will be repaired.

Remedy
Dealers will test the vehicle's anti-lock brake system and repair the vehicles if necessary. Also the warranty on all ABS components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). Owners will also be reimbursed for previous ABS component repair costs.

The vehicle was taken to courtesy chrysler dodge jeep RAM of superstition springs (located at 6130 e auto park dr mesa, az 85206, 480-569-2991) where it was diagnosed that the actuator piston assembly and the pump motor failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and stated that they did not make faulty parts. The failure mileage was 200,000. The vin was not available.

The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who stated that the brake actuator piston assembly failed. After contacting the dealer and manufacturer in reference to nhtsa campaign number: 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic), the contact was informed that the lifetime recall warranty for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump motor assembly would not be honored. The failure mileage was 245,000.

The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the failure was caused by the anti-lock system which needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and stated that they would not offer any assistance with the repairs because the vehicle was over 100,000 miles. The warranty was not a life time warranty as stated in the recall. The failure mileage was 125,000 and the current mileage was 137,385.

We have a 1993 chrysler town and country MINI van, and discovered a few years ago about a well known problem these have, wet or even damp, the belts will be thrown off the engine causing everything from no charging to losing your power steering. I guess this IS a problem that chrysler knows about , but will not correct. All that IS needed IS to replace the smooth pulley belt adjuster, to a pulley with sides that keep it on................my problem, my wife nearly wrecked recently when the belt came off while going around a curve on the highway when the belt came off. I am lucky I didn't get a call from the highway patrol that day. Chrysler needs to replace these pulleys. It costs around $150-170 for consumers to buy the kit, we shouldn't have too. How many people have to die before chrysler fixes this. *Tr

Rio rancho chrysler dealer, located at 25 rio rancho rd., pomona, california 91766, in cooperation with the chrysler corporation has caused the following: a.failure to correct the ABS system leak and resulting ABS light coming and staying on. Within days of dealer??s repair work, the leak and ABS light problems were discovered. Now the dealer states it to be a new problem that occurred during the couple of days of dealer??s work. The dealer says the new problem IS the shorted ABS pressure switch, with a replacement cost of $565. The dealer further asserts the newly discovered shorted ABS switch has rendered ABS pump inoperative and causing the leak from brake fluid reservoir. The dealer IS wrong on both counts. The ABS system works well so long the brake fluid level IS adequate, and the leakage IS not from reservoir cap but from somewhere else in the ABS system, which was not corrected the first time. b.the repair should have been part of nhtsa recall 96v099000, without any charge to the owner. However, the dealer, in concert with chrysler corporation, replaced the ABS accumulator without any factual basis and charged the vehicle owner $521.88 for it. Even if one assumes that the accumulator needed replacement, there should not be a $274.38 charge for labor. Because it??s dismantling and remounting IS part of ABS piston, pump and motor replacement, which by dealer??s own assertion was covered under the above recall. c.the dealer in it??s quest to milk, gouge and hose the customer for more money, deliberately left the tps connecter ajar despite a second visit by the owner, rendering the vehicle unsafe stalling at or near idle speed in traffic and on highways. *nm

I have had my ABS pump replaced 4 times under the recall. most of the time the filter also must be replaced. we have spent almost $500 on this related repair. when I called the customer assistance line I was told they had a "commitment not to assist" and that "they will not help". this IS completely unacceptable. to not provide any recourse on this IS pathetic. in addition to costing us additional money, this failure has put me and my family at risk. the last time it failed, I cracked a bone in my foot because I had to hit the brakes so hard. to treat a customer like this IS completely unacceptable. *jb

Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi IS closing this investigation.
