Safety record from NHTSA: recalls, owner complaints, investigations and service bulletins.
These records cover every 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
8 recalls name the 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan. Newest first.
Vehicle description: minivans. the left hand windshield wiper pivot drive arm was not mechanically staked to the pivot shaft.
This could allow the drive arm to disengage from the shaft leading to a loss of wiper function. the driver's visibility would be impaired, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the left hand side windshield wiper pivot assembly.
Vehicle description: passenger mini-vans. covers on the solid stalk mounted seat belt buckles can become dislodged causing the release button to stick inside the cover. the buckle would then be only partially latched.
In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Dealers will install a cover retaining clip to the stalk mounted buckle cover to prevent dislocation of the buckle cover.
Vehicle description: passenger mini-vans. The center rear seat, right outboard side, safety belt anchor hook can become unattached from the body anchor position.
In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Dealers will replace the anchor hook retaining clip with a revised profile clip and a cover plate.
The bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt IS loose, the gas strut IS over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles IS higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
The steering wheel armature stamping can crack and separate from the center hub attachment to the steering column.
If the steering wheel separates from the center hub attachment to the steering column, loss of control can occur increasing the risk of an accident.
Dealers will inspect the steering wheel for armature cracks in the center hub attachment area. any steering wheels showing cracks will be replaced. all other vehicles will have a reinforcement plate installed to prevent steering wheel separation in the event cracking occurs.
The ABS hydraulic control unit can experience excessive brake actuator piston seal wear causing pump-motor deterioration.
If this condition occurs, the ABS function could be lost and reduced power assist would be experienced during vehicle braking increasing the potential for a vehicle accident.
Dealers will test the vehicle's anti-lock brake system and repair the vehicles if necessary. Also the warranty on all ABS components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). Owners will also be reimbursed for previous ABS component repair costs.
Vehicle description: light duty passenger minivans without remote release. this IS not a safety recall. there has been no determination that a safety defect exists with the minivan latches. chrysler IS conducting a service campaign to replace the liftgate latch assembly of the affected minivans. in a collision, the rear liftgate latch assembly could…
If the liftgate latch opens, occupants can be ejected resulting in significantly increased risk of injury or death.
Chrysler dealers will replace the liftgate latch with a new stronger latch assembly without charge. chrysler began notifying owners of these vehicles in october 1995.

ABS brake actuator motor failure. For the third time the ABS motor has failed. chrysler claims the part IS no longer serviced and will not honor the lifetime warrantee 96v099000. the part IS available in the aftermarket for about $350.00 after a number of calls to fiat chrysler they would only offer to buy the vehicle from me for $300.00 which IS the lowest value to be had by kbb.
Tl*the contact owns a 1992 dodge grand cherokee. The dealer stated that they have been making the repairs per recall 96v099000 service brakes, hydraulic: antilock since september 25, 2009. She will contact the manufacturer. The vin was not available. The failure and the current mileages were 172,104.
I have a 1992 dodge grand caravan MINI van. Front wheel drive with a 3.3 engine. Every time the serpentine belt gets the slightest amount of moisture on it...it comes off! At least once a month which requires paying a pro to reinstall it. The biggest problem IS that one loses all power steering not mention all functions controlled by the belt! The last time this happened to me was in rain on a busy two lane highway and I almost flipped the van! It happens without warning and with immediate loss of power steering. I have relocated the tensioner and pulley assembly with no satisfaction. The problem IS that chrysler designed these MINI vans with no shields installed to turn moisture from the entire pulley system (top or bottom) and the pulleys have no 'lip' to hold the belt in place allowing it to slide off when wet! IS there no way chrysler can be forced to install an oem product or shield to prevent this and save lives? This IS a very common problem in all chrysler MINI vans from apprx. 1992-2007. *Tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1992 dodge grand caravan. while driving 30 mph, the contact stated that the brake light illuminated on the instrument panel and the brake pedal was difficult to depress. a mechanic stated that the ABS needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign ID number 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). the purchase date and powertrain were unknown. the current and failure mileages were approximately 152,513.
Tl*the contact owns a 1992 dodge grand caravan. while driving 45 mph, the driver's seat belt buckle dislodged which caused the release button to stick inside the cover. there IS a safety recall for the seat belts: front: buckle assembly (nhtsa campaign ID # 97v148000) however, the dealer stated that his vin was not included. the current mileage was 223,087 and the failure mileage was unavailable. the purchase date was unavailable.
Dt*: the contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, extreme pressure on the brake pedal was needed to stop the vehicle. there was no warning prior to the incident that the brakes were faulty. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, where the dealer determined that the hydraulic control unit failed. the vehicle was not repaired due to the unavailability of parts. there IS a nhtsa recall # 96v099000 which pertains to the antilock brakes. the vehicle was repaired by the previous owner based on the recall, but the problem re-occurred.*ak
Dt: the contact received nhtsa recall campaign 96v099000 concerning anti lock brakes. the recall only offered a partial remedy. In order to completely repair the problem additional parts had to be replaced at the contact's expense. According to the recall, an extended or lifetime warranty would be offered on other anti-lock components. The dealer and manufacturer stated the recall was completed correctly, and the contact would be responsible for the remaining expense. *Ak
Dt: the contact stated recall 96v099000 repairs was done on the ABS brakes in 2004. However, he wa shaving a failure. The ABS light illuminated on the dashboard. Upon inspection by the service dealership the ABS controller failed. He has been in contact with the manufacturer. They claimed the part in question was not covered by the recall. No repairs have been made.*ak
Dt: 1992, dodge, grand caravan, intermittent brake failure, no power assist, the brakes will not stop vehicle quickly enough. also, right front brake calipers failed after going about 20 miles in stop and go traffic. consumer already replaced the hydraulic brake line and the calipers. but it did not solve the problem, which only left the brake actuator piston assembly and pump motor assembly. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer, and dealer could not see the problem, dealer said that if they could duplicate the problem they would fix it because the actuator pump and assembly motor were still under warranty. the intermittent brake failure was included in a recall 96v099000 concerning ABS module control failure. the problem was fixed then. consumer stated that the problem was intermittent so the dealer will not fix because they could not duplicate the problem. *ak
Dt: had the brakes and ABS unit replaced 3 times, and consumer IS very aggravated. Talked to chrysler, and they have the information. There was no warning that vehicle had no brakes. *Ak
The consumer was involved in past recall 730 by dodge that was poorly handled. the rear hatch attachment bolt was the item on recall. the consumer had taken the vehicle in for repair in july of 1997 because the bolts had broken, and had them replaced. then they broke again in august of 1999. on may 1, 2005 one of them broke again, and almost broke his wife's arm. on 5-3-2005, and the dealer said that the car was too old. they wouldn't fix it unless the consumer paid. the dealers response was inappropriate. the dealer checked with the districts office and validated that it wouldn't do it. also, the consumer was inappropriate. The third issue was the adequacy of the recall itself. the fourth issue was that the dealer just told him that he wouldn't fix both sides. *ak the oil pan leaked and the serpitine belt. recall campaign#97v079000. *sc
Consumer stated dealer refused to repair the recall for ABS brake system until consumer paid a diagnostic fee. *Ak recall campaign recall number: 96v099000 *tc
While sitting in the driver's seat seatback snapped and then collapsed onto the rear seat. this happened while I was simply reaching into my front pocket for my keys. I was not injured and feel very fortunate that my children were not in the back seat at the time the seat failed. I went to white bear dodge and talked to the service manager. he said that chrysler does not supply parts for seats, and that a new seat would not be available for my vehicle. I believe that this IS a safety related defect that the manufacturer must fix, and I need to know how to proceed. *ak
The consumer states the ABS system malfunctioned without warning. As a result the brake fluid leaks. please provide additional information. *nm
While driving 35 mph hood flew up. As a result, driver's visibility was impaired. No impact reported. *Ak
1992 grand caravan brake light and ABS light stay on for long periods of time. brake pedal at times will not depress. I am a 76 year old lady and I am having to park my vehicle because I am scared to drive it with brakes only intermittently working. told by independent mechanic that part of the ABS system needs replacing at a cost of over $2000?? This IS ridiculous!*ak
Bad paint its peeling flakeing the wood grain too faiding bad trans I just paid a dealership over 2 grand for a new one warranteed for only 3 years or 36,000 miles. bad power windows cable broke=over $400.= me gettingscrewd bad lug nuts little metal caps over lugnuts come off and then tire tool dosent fit so you end up at the dealership getting them cut off. keeps stalling headliner falling down headlights are totally yellow at night you cant see more than 50 feet on low beams so you have to have high beams on just to get low beam quality. breaks new rotors, mastercillender, hardwear, drums, shoes, pads, fluid, mastercillender caps, weel cillenders,= over $500. To the dealer and me and my fam stranded on the roadside for 4 houres getting recalled parts fitted only takes an act of congress and about three days with out a car unless they give you there "loaner" loaner=car no one would but twelve years ago. james reynolds sharon tenn gooberclese@hotmail.com owner of a 92 dodge grand caravan LE
While driving 20 mph driver applied the brakes and pedal was hard. consumer was unable to stop the vehicle, it skidded, and hit another vehicle. upon impact, both air bags did not deploy. no injuries were reported ABS light appeared on the dashboard, and remained on until the vehicle was turned off. consumer drove vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that a part of the ABS module needed replacing. The part was not on recall or under warranty. *ak
My 1992 dodge grand caravan LE coolant fan failed and the relay did not interupt which continued to feed power back to the fuse panel which in return caused my wiring harness to ignite into flames under the hood right over the left strut ! *Ak
Consumer stated that brake lights kept coming on, and brakes failed, and brake pedal felt hard. this lasted from 2-5 minutes each time. This has happened at least 4 times. Consumer was not involved in a collision, but was afraid that something might happen.*ak
Gear shift disengaged from park while vehicle ignition was off. Purse strap looped over gear shift as owner was exiting vehicle causing vehicle gear shift to move from park, vehicle began to roll backwards causing owner to slip under left front wheel. *ak
The hatchback support strut on my caravan failed today - the bolt that supports the strut in the car body sheared off, while the vehcile was stopped at a stop sign. The strut expanded inside the cavity in the body as far as it could once the bolt sheared. I brought my car in for the recall (97v079000) in about 1997. I know chrysler performed the recall because the new "bigger" washers are on the lift supports. as I have no way to examine the bolts for stress cracking, there IS no maintenance I can perform to insure the rear liftgate won't fall onto the head of me or someone in my family. Was this supposed to be a one-time recall for chrysler? I got the impression that this recall was supposed to "fix" the shearing bolt problem, but it IS surprising to me that it has returned. I think it IS very dangerous.
On at least five occasions while driving on highway vehicle stalled. once vehicle came to a complete stop it could be restarted. manufacturer and dealer have been informed of the problem.*ak
While driving when attempting to stop the vehicle excessive force had to be applied to the brake pedal to depress the brakes. vehicle failed to stop, causing extended stopping distance. emergency brakes had to be depressed to stop the vehicle. the cause of the failure IS undetermined. Consumer made contact with the dealership. *Ak

After an extensive investigation and analysis, chrysler has identified the defect as a fatigue failure, origination in the heat affected region of the projection welds of the steering wheel hub to steering wheel armature attachment.the hub IS the portion of the steering wheel assembly that connects it to the steering column shaft and IS attached to the underside of the steering wheel assembly by 4 welds.if cracks develop in the heat affected region of the welds and propagate through the steering wheel armature to each of the welds, the steering wheel can separate from the hub.this IS a slow progressive failure which normally occurs at high mileage.in some cases complainants have reported a looseness or wobbling of the steering wheel prior to separation.to remedy this defect, chrysler will inspect the steering wheels of the affected vehicles for cracks in the hub area.if any cracks are found, the steering wheel will be replaced.all other vehicles will have reinforcing plates installed which would prevent a steering wheel separation should cracking occur.

Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi IS closing this investigation.
