This IS not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. however, it IS deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. equipment description: ford IS replacing all firestone wilderness at 15, 16, and 17 inch tires mounted on ford trucks and suvs. ford reports tread separation can occur due to a combination of the sensitivity of the tire…
Should the tread separate at highway speeds, a vehicle crash could occur, possibly resulting in personal injury or death.
The replacement/reimbursement program for this campaign expired on march 31, 2002. however, customers can contact ford at 1-877-917-3673 or go on-line to www.ford.com for possible assistance.
Tire description: firestone wilderness at, size p235/75r15, produced at the decatur, illinois tire plant and all firestone radial atx and radial atx II tires, size p235/75r15. operation of these tires at low inflation pressures, high speed, and in hot weather, can contribute to separation of the tire tread.
If the tread separates from the tire, the driver can lose control of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash causing injury or death.
The replacement/reimbursement program for this campaign expired on august 29, 2001. however, customers should contact firestone customer service at 1-800-465-1904 for possible assistance.
Equipment description: aftermarket brake rotors for use on certain ford and mazda trucks. cracked castings caused cracks to appear on the outer diameter of the rotor hat or around the stud hole.
Loss of braking can result.
Aimco will reimburse consumers/installers for the cost of replacement rotors and installation. consumers are requested to return to the location where the rotors were originally purchased/installed for replacement.
The studs which attach the brake master cylinder to the power brake vacuum booster assembly can develop stress corrosion cracking after being operated for an extended period of time in the southern california location.
If a crack occurs, it could result in one or both studs fracturing. The master cylinder could then separate from the vacuum booster, when the brakes are applied, preventing the service brakes from activating increasing the risk of a vehicle accident.
Dealers will replace the power brake vacuum booster assembly.
During extreme cold, northern climate winter conditions, ice can form in the throttle body of the engine causing the throttle plate to remain in the highway cruising position after the accelerator IS released or the speed control IS deactivated.
The vehicle stopping distances can be increased possibly resulting in an accident.
Dealers will replace the air intake duct and valve assembly with revised units.
The parking brake control self-adjust pawl does not line up properly with the self-adjust rachet causing the pawl to slip over one or more teeth in the rachet.
When the above occurs, it can result in parking brake system ineffectiveness. The parking brake will not hold the vehicle, causing the vehicle to roll freely, if the transmission IS not left in gear.
A wedge will be installed which will serve to lock the parking brake self-adjust mechanism pawl into engagement with the rachet. Also, owners will be advised to release and reapply the parking brake whenever tooth skip occurs and will be reminded to always turn off the engine and leave the vehicle in gear when the vehicle IS parked.
Throttle stuck at high rpms and gas pedal stuck to the floor had to turn off the ignition before it blew up my truck. this was supposed to have been repaired in january by ford in ventura and now it IS happening again this has happened to so many rangers and one of us owners of will wind up killed. fix this please
Gas tank cracked at 86000 miles can't hold more then half a tank. transmission wearing out and driven lightly never used the bed of truck to carry things mainly freeway miles
How can the frame of my truck rust out faster than the bed or cab. The cab mounts are gone. The shackles of the leaf springs are paper thin and ready to collapse. When I drive down the road and hit a bump it sounds like the cab IS going fall to the ground. I am afraid one of these days , I'll get in an accident and the entire cab IS going to fly off the truck. The motor has outlasted the frame. Make laugh.
1993 ford ranger severe frame / suspension rust. on the rear leaf spring have had to replace front and rear hangers / shackles. the oem ones rusted completely through and let the leaf springs break loose. only contact was on the spring eyelet hitting the bottom for the truck bed. have also had to replace the cab mounts, also rusted completely through so that the rear of the cab was sitting on the frame. the frame IS also showing severe corrosion. the farther back the worse it IS.
TL* the contact owns a 1993 ford ranger. The contact stated that while the vehicle was being serviced, the mechanic noticed that the steering coupler was fractured in multiple places and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 176,000.
The governor for the 90 mph governor was recalled by the consumer agency responsible for recalls. the problem was that it was a potential fire hazard. I called upon ford several times over a period of years, as well as went by the ford shop and was told that it was not pertaining to my 1993 ford ranger. not until after the truck broke and would not shift did ford pretend to fix the problem as a recall, but, also charged 1000 dollars. the truck did not fill like it was fixed properly I approached the landers ford collierville of collierville tennessee and he stated it was fixed. they then tried to sell me another truck. any way the truck did not go another 500 miles before breaking and getting rear accident by a hit and run driver. ford took my 1000 dollars and did not fix my truck and are still ignorant to the day about my truck and recall. I am a commercial truck driver and in the period of 11 years have not put but 57000 miles and do not need a new truck from ford then or now or ever with such business tactics. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1993 ford ranger with firestone tires, size: p225/70/r14. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the rear driver side tire tread separated from the tire, causing the contact to crash into a highway divider. The contact stated that the vehicle was destroyed and the contact sustained injuries. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 93,000. The vin was unavailable.
Was driving around 50 to 55 mph when I seen smoke coming from truck so I pulled over to see what was wrong and seen transmission fluid pouring out of transmission onto exhaust pipe this has happen twice now don,t know why coming from front of transmission auto 3.0 engine only when I kick it in overdrive it happens. *tr
The frame has rusted until the truck IS no longer drivable. It IS four wheel drive and I have already replaced the rear spring shackles when they rusted out in 2006. I bolted a piece of angle to the transmission support to repair it after it rusted into and dropped the transmissiom and twisted the drive shaft into while driving down the road I took it up on 2/9/2012 to get a new exhaust put on it and and got a call from the service garage to come look at the under carraige of the truck. The bed has a rusted out support, the transmission support crossmember IS rusted into on the other side from where I repaired it before and the front support crossmember under the radiator IS rusted out. The support for the spare tire ruster out years ago. The engine and drive train work great but the truck IS scrap now because there IS nothing left of the frame and body supports. *tr
On my 1993 ford ranger,my brake & clutch mounting bracket failed due to stress fracture of welds. This caused lose of brakes and use of clutch. Ford has a recall on failure of studs on the power brake booster that IS mounted on this bracket, but nothing on the failure of the bracket. *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1993 ford ranger. the contact stated the front frame was corroded and rusted. The dealer was contact and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 138,761. updated 07/08/11*lj updated 08/05/11
Frame IS rotting - repaired the rear section and now the front IS rotting where the shocks/springs are mounted to the frame. the entire frame IS a mess but the rest of the body IS good. *Tr
Noticed gasoline runs from under truck when tank IS filled up with gas. on 11/30/2010, filler neck on fuel tank cracked profusely as well as fuel inductor line; fuel was pouring out under truck as I watched the gas gauge go from 1/4 of a tank full to empty in 2 seconds. Dealer indicates that original fuel inductor lines (that fits on top of tank) and tank are no longer available from ford dealer. Entire fuel system must be replaced. *Tr
Tl*the contact owns 1993 ford ranger. While the vehicle was parked the contact tried to apply the parking brake and it would lock in place. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be repaired. The dealer was contacted and stated that there was a recall on that year, make and model but his vehicle was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
1993 ford ranger fuel filler tube IS made of steel and mounted so road salt can corrode it. fuel filler tube leaks gasoline on pavement every time I refuel. part IS $429 plus install. leaking fuel at the gasoline station seems dangerous, would you agree? *Tr
Rear bumper literally fell off. investigation revealed non repairable rust to frame and bumper brackets. frame IS severely rusted. *Tr
Fuel filler neck has split at the tank connection bend. Fuel leaks profusely out of this split when tank IS filled. When the tank reaches full capacity, the fuel filler outer hose fills up partially. The fuel in the outer hose then leaks out onto the tank and ground. I am repeating this claim for 2 separate vehicles, a '93 and a '94. *Tr
Truck caught on fire for no reaosn. It was being warmed up. *Tr
While driving home the truck dropped on the passenger's side suddenly. The front spring housing on the passenger's side of 1993 V6 ford ranger truck rusted and broke. this could have been catastrophic if I would have been on the highway driving at 55 mph. Please advise if this was something that ford knew about, and if they were willing to fix it. The truck IS in good shape otherwise and runs well- just leaks a little engine oil. *Ak
I never received any recall notification on nhtsa campaign ID number 06e026000. the wedge alluded to in nhtsa recall was installed on the truck and did not solve the problem. the emergency brake would still not lock into place, and now did not work at all. *ak
TL* - the contact called regarding the 1993 ford ranger. the contact was traveling at 40 mph and the rear end of the vehicle suddenly came crashing down and severed the brake line, there were no warning indicators. the contact was able to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop. the vehicle was diagnosed as having corroded rear shackles. the front and rear shackles were replaced as well as the brakes. *ak updated 2/27/2007 -*nm
TL* - the contact's 1993 ford ranger caught on fire. there were no warnings prior to the incident. the contact was traveling approximately 65 mph with an odometer reading of 84000 at the time of the failure. the contact purchased the vehicle on 11/7/06 from a private owner. the throw-out bearing was replaced on 11/9/06. the road conditions were dry and clear. the vehicle sputtered so the contact pulled off the highway. The vehicle lost power, and a fire started under the hood of the vehicle. Passenger compartment also caught on fire and was destroyed.*ak updated 03/02/07. *Jb
Unexpected fire under hood after turning the defroster switch on. while driving in a parking garage my nephew who was driving at the time turned the defroster switch on and all of a sudden there was smoke bellowing out of the vents into the ford ranger pk/u cab. he pulled over to the side of the lot and someone ran up to him and told him to get out of the pk/u because he saw fire coming from under the hood. the guy was carrying a fire extinguished. He told my nephew to slowly lift the hood while he began to extinguish the fire under the hood. the flames where very intense that it melted the heater core cover, wiring, the a/c motor and fan and paint on the inside and out side of vehicle. it also melted the inside of the dash board where the on the other side would be your glove compartment. in the meantime nephew called 911 and fire dept was dispatched and they got there few minutes later and the fire had been put out already but as a precaution they foamed the car engine and unhooked the battery. he was told to not start the truck again and have it flat bedded to garage for inspection and possible repair. I called ford and they took report which will take 7-10 days to get inspector here in fl to look at vehicle. this was a 1993 ford ranger, 2 door, stand bed, 4CYL, manual. this truck just burst into flames with the only cause that mechanics have found so far was the motor burned from the inside out and heated so much that it melted the brackets holding in place and when it hit the heat core it melted it and also the fan motor IS melted and adhered permanently to this heat core now on the outside. my brother owns this vehicle since I gave it to him 1 yr ago but they are still family and their safety IS a concern to me. this should not have happened and this IS as the mechanic claims almost 99% sure it IS defective parts. the heat was so intensive even thought it was only for a few mins if that to due so much damage like it did. *Jb
Gas leaks from the filler neck and tank when refueling. The scent of gasoline lingers for a couple of days after fillup. the amount of fuel lost about 1/2 to 1 gallon. there IS the potential for a possible fire since this occurs at the gas station, from static electricity or heat from the catalytic converter. This truck has never been involved in an accident or used off road. I am a personal friend of the original owner, who sold the truck to my brother whom I obtained the truck from. *nm
Rear leaf spring brackets ( which attach leaf springs to the frame) have rusted out and leaf spring and axle came loose. This vehicle has less than 100,000 mi. It broke as I was pulling in to my driveway. Both brackets on right side were replaced as well as brake lines which were torn loose. Mechanic said left side brackets were ready to break also and will be replaced as soon as he gets them ordered. He said this was a very common repair on ford ranger pickups. Old parts are available. *Jb
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
Ford continues to sudy the problem attempting to determine why stud fractures are not frequently occurring in other parts of the country.likewise, odi continues gathering information to ascertain whether the recall scope should include other geographical areas.if evidence indicates the scope should be expanded, odi will reopen the investigation as warranted.
