The contact stated while pulling out of a driveway, the contact observed a grinding noise coming from the front end of the vehicle and the steering wheel violently yanked to the right. Additionally, the contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle pulled to the left inadvertently. The vehicle was stopped and inspected. The contact observed that the front passenger’s side tire was dangling by the rocker arm and the subframe. The vehicle was taken to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front passenger’s side subframe and the rocker arms needed to be replaced due to extreme corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 114,000.

On 4/8/22, the rear window of our 2009 Toyota 4runner just shattered and fell apart for no reason. We took it to get replaced at Safelite on 4/13/22 and one of their techs asked if we knew what caused the glass to break and we told him we had no idea. We told him it just broke out of nowhere from some strange reason, and he told us that it looks like the window breaking was caused by the overheating of the rear defroster and that it was a common issue with 2009 4runners. We were in shock to find this out and are grateful that our son or dog was not in the back seat when this happened. I found out online that Toyota issued a recall for this issue (Warranty Program ZG7) and I spoke with a Toyota customer service rep to see if we could be reimbursed the $100 we paid out of pocket for this manufacturer's defect and they said the warranty program ended in 2018 so they couldn't help us. We were very disappointed to be told this because this is obviously still happening with these 4runners and it's a major safety issue as well.

Less than 80K miles and frame IS completely rotting apart. While driving approximately 40 mph I lost control because the control arm completely separated from the frame! Completely unsafe and death traps
- Steering
Steering was very hard to do and really jerky.took it to dealership and was told that the rack and pin needed to be completely corroded and needed to be replaced. Yet another part I have to eat the cost due to corrosion. I have read multiple complaints about the same problems. Why IS nothing being done?

I have had it to the dealer 15-20 times and they can't find the cause. They said it had to fail for at least 5 seconds for it to register on the computer module. it never lasts more than 2-3 seconds and, I consider it 'very dangerous'. dates above are appx. it does it every day. *tr

Driving along a two lane u.s. Highway at the posted speed, I noticed that my fuel gauge was showing fully empty, and the warning light was flashing. pushing the odometer trip button, I noticed that I had not yet reached the mileage for a "normal" fill up, where I routinely get 20-21 mpg. at the end of that trip, when I turned the vehicle off and restarted it, the fuel gauge showed half full. using the trip odometer, I drove an additional estimated 30 miles to home. The fuel gauge continued to display half full. the next morning, I drove approximately 3 miles to the gas station, and was surprised when it took almost 15 gallons to fill the tank. the needle on the gauge then went to full. since then it has only come down to one half, yet my mileage now IS at the point (261-270) where I normally fill up when the needle near the empty line. I believe this problem IS no doubt widespread. *tr

I was driving in the left/fast lane on a toll road when another vehicle who was speeding in excess of 55mph entering the toll road crossing and cutting off the other lanes of traffic running into me on the passenger side forcing me into the concrete wall/barrier head on. His vehicle swung into again into my passenger rear side then bounced off. I was stunned, in shock, unable to exit on my side and didn't see it coming. I was thrown left into the frame and window and jerked around even though I had my seat belt fastened. The air bags did not deploy. I had front and side curtain airbags and had only just purchased the 4runner a few months prior. It was declared to be totaled. I permanently injured my neck, back and broke my nose. In addition, I have anxiety and panic attacks about driving. The other driver was cited at fault for failure to control speed and unsafe lane changes and his insurance paid for my totaled vehicle and what little insurance coverage he had for my personal injuries. I was just now notified that there was a problem with my vehicle's air bags and sensors (a recall), now that it IS almost exactly 4 years from the accident, there IS nothing I can apparently do to hold toyota at fault due to statute of limitations. This very upsetting. I am fully disabled now and will be on pain management and periodic physical therapy for the rest of my life, and can no longer even perform simple chores. *tr

TL* the contact owns a 2009 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and turning, the vehicle lost accelerating power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000. updated 03/21/13*lj the consumer stated the transmission slipped (revved to high rpms) while attempting to accelerate after slowing down below 15 mph (while making turns or slowing for traffic). This has caused dangerous situations where significant lag time between depressing the gas pedal and when the transmission engaged while making a left turn across oncoming traffic or when a quick acceleration was needed after slowing down. The potential for an accident IS high. Toyota should address the situation before someone gets into a serious accident as several other reports of this condition have been reported. There are a number of complaints on the internet with the same problem.

I purchased my 2009 4runner new last year. from the minute I drove it off the lot I noticed a problem with the transmission. Any time the vehicle slows below 15mph and then the accelerator IS depressed, the engine revs to a high rpm as if searching for a gear and does not accelerate as commanded. This IS very prevalent in slow traffic, slowing for a yield sign or turning corners. The biggest safety concern IS in slippery road conditions. When the vehicle finally does find a gear to shift into, it lurches forward. the shifting into gear from a high rpm on slick surfaces could cause the wheels to spin out. I almost experienced a loss of control of the vehicle because of this. I've brought it in to get repaired at the dealership twice. All they do IS flash the ecm and the problem persists. most importantly, toyota has acknowledged this exact same problem on the 2010 model by issuing a tsb. (Tsb-0166-10) from reading several toyota 4runner forums, this tsb fixes the problem. please put pressure on toyota to issue a fix for the 2009 model before someone gets injured or killed. *tr

I am filing my second complaint about my 2009 toyota 4runner. My first complaint was filed in february 2010. I complained to my dealership about the problem since right after purchasing the 4runner which we bought brand new in may 2009. The problem occurred when slowing down to turn corners to about 15 mph, and then stepping on the accelerator to speed up, the car revs, sometimes 2500-3000 rpms before the transmission engages and we lurch forward. Now, 17 months later and many trips and e-mails to my dealership, who can't get a response from toyota that makes sense, and my 4runner still exhibits the same problem. My husband had a kidney transplant in august 2009, which requires travel to a big city about 90 miles from home several times a month, that has heavy traffic flow. Last week, I had to make a quick acceleration to merge into oncoming traffic, and for the first time, the 4runner actually did the same thing it does on turns. When I stepped on the gas to merge into oncoming traffic, the 4runner just revved for a few seconds and then lurched forward into traffic. Luckily, no accident resulted, but we were very scared. I participate in forums on different car sites and there are many of us having the exact problems and yet toyota has no answer or puts us off with some lame explanations or worse, tells us that IS just the was the 4runner IS because of the computer. my dealership has reset the computer and did not remedy the problem. I am reporting this newest incident for documentation in case this problem actually causes an accident, my complaint will be on file. Thank you updated 09/28/10 *bf updated ivoq 09/29/10 *tr

2009 4 runner transmission: same as other complaints about slipping and lag time in engaging into gear at low speeds (like when slowing down to make turns or go over speed bumps). obviously not shifting correctly and IS a safety issue when turning across traffic and the vehicle does not respond properly when the accelerator IS depressed. toyota needs to investigate this as it looks like a recurring problem for this year and a safety issue. *tr

My granddaughter was driving a 2009 that I bought her for graduation in may 2010. In june 2010 she and some friends were driving and a fire started in the console area. There were flames and smoke. They stopped the car, went up to someone's house and got water to pour into the car and put out the fire out. If they hadn't been quick thinking, the car would be toast. Also, if they had wrecked and could not get out of the car, they would have had severe burns or death. We want the car fixed under warranty rather than our insurance. It was several weeks before toyota finally hired an independent engineering firm to determine the cause and we still don't have a solution. The car has been at the dealer almost 2 months. *tr

In a parking lot, while trying to stop and park on reverse, the vehicle kept accelerated on d (drive). I had not change the stick yet to reverse. I was just trying to stop. I had to step on the brakes very hard to control the car and turn off the engine and change the stick to p (parking). The rear right wheel left a mark on the pavement. *Tr

I am filing this claim to report a potential safety problem with the transmission in the 2009 toyota 4runner. I bought my 2009 4runner new in may of 2009 and from the first week noticed a problem with the transmission slipping, and it IS progressively getting worse. it happens consistently each time I slow down (but don't stop completely) to turn corners and then continue to accelerate,. the transmission doesn't respond, the car just sits there, and the engine goes from 1500 rpms to up to 2500 rpms before the transmission catches up with the engine again and the car then moves. I am concerned each time this happens, especially when there IS traffic following behind me in the turn. I brought it in to the dealership to check it out right after we bought it. They ran a diagnostic and told us that everything checked out ok. I had the technician drive it, and I went with him. he said that he couldn't feel what I was talking about, even though I felt it when he slowed to make a turn. He then told me that it was probably because it took the new electronic transmission a few seconds to communicate with the car's computer. Sounded like he was guessing at what might be causing the problem. I have since contacted customer care at toyota, and received a response in e-mail telling me to contact the dealership in my area, and that toyota had already done so on my behalf. he said if I didn't hear from the manager at my dealership by feb. 11, 2010, to contact toyota again. I haven't heard from my dealership as of feb 13. I have talked with other owners of this model, and they experience the same thing, and they have gotten the same runaround from the company. *Tr

On February 16, 2010, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened RQ10-003 to determine whether the scope of prior Toyota recalls relating to potential unintended acceleration were sufficiently broad, including, among others, Toyota recalls 07E-082, 09V-388, 10V-017, and 10V-023.NHTSA also requested information regarding potential electronic causes of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles.I. Pedal Interference from Floor mats, Carpet Covers and Plastic Pads in Carpets.During the RQ10-003 investigation, ODI reviewed a large volume of documents to assess whether additional vehicles should be recalled.Following the agency's analysis, NHTSA requested that Toyota recall additional vehicles.Toyota complied with the agency's request. The details of these recalls are set forth more fully in Toyota's reports to NHTSA pursuant to 49 CFR Part 573.These recalls are as follows:Recall 11V-112: (1) model year (MY) 2004-2006 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid; and, (2) MY 2004-2007 Lexus RX330,RX350, and RX400h (hybrid model). The total estimated population under this recall is 769,379 vehicles. This recall remedies potential accelerator pedal entrapment caused by a loose floor carpet cover (trim panel). Recall 11V-113: (1) MY 2003-2009 through 2009 Toyota 4Runner; (2) MY 2006-2010 Toyota RAV4; and, (3) MY 2008-2011 Lexus LX570.The total estimated population under this recall is 1,381,000 vehicles. This recall supplements recall 09V-388 and remedies potential accelerator pedal entrapment by an unsecured floor mat.Recall 11V-115: (1) MY 2006-2007 Lexus GS300 (all wheel drive vehicles); and, (2) MY 2006-2007 Lexus GS350 (all wheel drive vehicles). The total estimated population under this recall is 19,647 vehicles. This recall remedies potential accelerator pedal entrapment caused by inadequate clearance between the pedal linkage and a plastic pad embedded in the vehicle's carpet.II. Potential Electronic Causes of Unintended Acceleration. After NHTSA opened RQ10-003, NHTSA launched a ten-month study of potential electronic causes of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.NHTSA launched the study in the spring of 2010 in light of concerns aired in Congressional hearings.NHTSA enlisted engineers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with expertise in areas such as computer controlled electronic systems, electromagnetic interference and software integrity to assess whether electronic systems or electromagnetic interference played a role in incidents of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. That study has concluded. Two reports are associated with the study and are available on NHTSA's website.NASA's report is entitled Technical Support to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on the Reported Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Unintended Acceleration (UA) Investigation, NESC Assessment No. TI-10-00618 (Jan. 18, 2011).NHTSA's report is entitled Technical Assessment of Toyota Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) Systems (Feb. 2011).Both reports should be read in conjunction with each other. As stated in its report, NASA did not find an electronic cause of large throttle openings that can result in unintended acceleration incidents. NHTSA did not find a vehicle-based cause of unintended acceleration incidents other than the physical pedal interference causes that are being addressed by Toyota's recalls. This RQ is closed.

- 11007455Some 2005 2024 Toyota vehicles that have undergone water intrusion may exhibit a condition in which a musty odor is present. Follow the procedures in this bulletin to remediate the odor and address this condition. The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to provide general guidelines and procedures for odor remediation. This Service Bulletin provides a guide on how to prepare and treat the interior of the vehicle for odor remediation. Refer to the applicable model and model year Repair Manual and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) website for the most up-to-date safety and precautionary guidelines. This Service Bulletin is to provide a general overview and direction for the odor remediation process.
- 11007445The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. If these contaminants settle and remain on a painted vehicle surface, especially the horizonal areas of the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage can occur. This damage is the result of actual etching of the paint and appears as pitting or water spots. As acid rain droplets on the vehicle surface evaporate, the concentration strength of the acid increases, causing deeper and more rapid damage. This evaporation and corrosive action also occur more rapidly on dark colored cars as direct sun heat increases. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain (see Figure 1), frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.
- 11007444To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible.
- 11007443Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. If these acidic compounds settle on an exposed vehicle, especially the horizontal areas such as the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage to the painted surfaces can occur. Acid rain damage can typically be identified on vehicles by the presence of stains on the paint surface that resemble hard water spots. Unlike water spots however, acid rain damage cannot be removed by regular washing procedures. Also, because acid rain can etch and soften the paint, normal buffing or polishing repair procedures should not be attempted. This can cause further damage and result in visible depressions in the paint surface. The following are the three major categories of acid rain damage: Minor damage: requires only buffing to repair. Moderate damage: usually requires neutralizing, color sanding, and buffing. Severe damage: extending beyond 1/2 mil of clearcoat on a pearl, metallic, or solid color, requires neutralization, sanding, and repainting. In cases where acid rain damage is minor, neutralization and buffing with a liquid-type paint finessing product may provide an adequate repair. Only specially formulated products outlined in this bulletin should be used for that purpose. Unfortunately, other than minor damage, there is no simple method of determining the actual extent (depth) of acid penetration other than color sanding a representative affected area until there is no visible etching or depressions, followed by measuring the amount of paint removed with either a magnetic or digital-type film thickness gauge. The procedures in this bulletin are intended for use by qualified body/paint technicians and should not be attempted by inexperienced personnel. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.
- 11006161Some 2005 2024 Toyota vehicles that have undergone water intrusion may exhibit a condition in which a musty odor is present.
- 11006151The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds.

- 11005153Toyota vehicles are currently protected with RapgardTM protective film designed to protect the horizontal painted surfaces. This material protects from acid rain, environmental fallout, and rail contamination.
- 11005149Vehicles may occasionally be subjected to contamination by airborne iron particles shed from railroad tracks, train wheels, exposure to heavy machinery facilities, grinding, welding, etc. This type of contamination can be identified by the presence of small, red or brown particles on the paint surface. These particles are often difficult to see on dark color paints but can be easily felt when brushing a hand across horizontal body surfaces such as the hood, roof, or deck lid.
