After owning the truck since it was new and always having it serviced at a Ford Dealership we are told that the engine needs to be rebuilt after only having 38K miles on the truck. This is due to a Ford engine defect. It had to be towed to the dealership.
I took my truck to the dealership for them to fix the transmission recall. Afterwards it started shifting funny and was not normal like before, I started getting codes like P0721 I took it back and they said it had nothing to do with what they did. I don't believe that - the truck was fine before. They finally looked at it again and said the recall had been stopped and they could do nothing anymore until it was reinstated. They also said I need a new transmission now. This is pissing me off.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle revved abnormally while shifting from 5th gear to 1st gear and nearly completed the downshift. The contact stated that on several occasions, while driving, the vehicle shifted into 5th gear, and when the contact depressed the accelerator pedal, the transmission downshifted within 10 seconds. The transmission warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle unexpectedly went into LIMP Mode. The vehicle was taken to a service center, where it was diagnosed and determined that the lead frame had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. Several dealers were contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealers confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.
I was driving down the highway and the truck locked up the dash was twitching and a wrench light came on the truck kept going down in gears.pulled over to the side of the road was an hour away from home turned truck off and on again but Everytime you try to go it does it all over again you crank it try put it in drive dash lights flickering and it goes to neutral one a different gear put it in neutral then to park it might go a few feet but same thing happens all over again the truck is not safe or drivable.I called Ford because I seen their is an open recall but they said their is no remedy for it at this time and told me their was not a do not drive order issued on the recall and that the vehicles could be driven but mine is unsafe and they did not tell me when one would be available.I need help I'm stranded and don't know what to do.Thank you
Leaks oil from oil filter. Can’t screw on tight enough to prevent oil from coming through. Driver side door doesn’t latch properly slight shift went opening and shutting. While driving air comes in around the door and you can feel it try to open.
The component is the 6R80 transmission; the transmission is not available for inspection as i purchased an entirely new unit through ford. After having ford service department technicians perform the recall service, my vehicle began shifting erratically over the course of a few weeks. When I reached back out to the service department I was told- "It will take time for the vehicle to go through a re-learn procedure." I was instructed to give it a few weeks. After about 2 weeks the vehicle began shifting erratically between 6th and 3rd gear at highway speeds. It would randomly hold gears and then skip multiple gears; these issues began and progressed drastically in a span of 2 days. After this issue occured i took the vehicle back to an authorized Ford service department only to be told that the vehicle would need a new transmission and that the update would force the vehicle to "clear/reset, the system after every shutdown." Furthermore the vehicle would only display an error or warning light momentarily before locking the transmission in gears 3-5. At which point the warning light would disappear, after the "limp" mode. Once in this "limp" mode the vehicle would again randomly downshift in 1st or 2nd gear and then jump to 6th.
On 9/25/2026, I made an appointment with a Ford Dealer to receive a fix for NHTSA saftey recall 26V237 on 10/7/2026. Before 10/7/2026 Ford paused the recall. In their own notice Ford says this problem could result in loss vehicle control increasing the risk of a crash. They do not rule out that a crash could occur at high speed. It appears that before the pause, they applied a software fix to many vehicles which caused new problems. They should make a serious effort to effect a solution even if it requires replacing hardware.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train); however, the failure occurred after the recall repair. While driving at 62 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted, and the transmission warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over, and the vehicle made a loud thumping sound before shutting off unexpectedly. The vehicle was restarted but failed to shift into 1st and 2nd gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the lead frame needed to be replaced; however, the correct code was not retrieved for the repair to be covered free of charge. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.
I am writing on behalf of my father, [XXX], age [XXX], regarding his 2015 Ford F-150 (VIN [XXX]), which is covered by Safety Recall 26S28 for unintended transmission downshift. His truck has already experienced the defect. In early October, it unexpectedly downshifted while he was driving. He contacted Asheville Ford multiple times to schedule a service and has been told the recall has been paused. His request for a loaner or rental was declined. Ford's recall page describes this defect as one that can cause the rear wheels to slide or lock up and increase the risk of a crash. Ford's site now also instructs owners not to have the repair performed while Ford investigates problems with the software remedy. As a result, the truck has a confirmed safety defect that Ford is not currently able to repair. This truck is my father's only transportation. He cannot safely drive it, and Ford has not provided a timeline for a repair. We are asking Ford to provide a loaner or rental vehicle until the recall repair can be completed. We believe this is a reasonable request given that the vehicle is unsafe because of a defect Ford has acknowledged, and the delay in repair is due to Ford's own investigation. Thank you for your help. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Powertrain), and the recall repair was completed. The contact stated that after the recall repair was performed, the vehicle experienced transmission downshifting at high speeds and hesitation. The contact also received notification for Customer Satisfaction Program: 26N04 (Transmission Molded Leadframe Replacement). The contact stated that the failure initially occurred when an orange wrench icon illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the dealer refused to perform the program repair at no cost. The dealer stated that the failure originated within the output speed sensor located inside the molded leadframe and required the contact to pay for the repair out of pocket. The dealer stated that the component would not be replaced under the program because the vehicle did not display the specific Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) required for coverage. The contact stated that the code was absent because the dealer completed the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software update, erasing all stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Both the manufacturer and the dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 MPH, the transmission suddenly downshifted, causing the vehicle to abruptly stop in the middle of the road. During the failure, the wrench warning light illuminated, and the vehicle entered Limp mode. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence, where a code reader retrieved a DTC indicating the torque converter was stuck in the off position. The vehicle was later towed to a local dealer, where the contact was informed that the transmission overheated and required replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train), which confirmed the VIN was included. The contact associated the failure with the recall. The failure mileage was 144,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle downshifted from sixth to fifth gear. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V444000 (Power Train). The dealer was notified of the failure; however, the contact was informed the part for the remedy remained unavailable. The failure mileage was 100,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifted into first gear, causing the engine RPM to increase. The wrench warning light illuminated, and the Drive (D) and Reverse (R) indicator lights turned off. The vehicle failed to restart and required towing on two occasions. The contact expressed concern that the unexpected downshift and potential rear-wheel lockup could result in a loss of vehicle control and a crash. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was notified and advised that the recall was paused, offering no further assistance. The dealer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 153,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the vehicle emitted a loud chirping sound and an exhaust odor entered the cabin. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with fractured exhaust manifold stud bolts and a warped exhaust manifold requiring replacement. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission would downshift to first gear as both the traction control and check engine warning lights would appear on the instrument panel. The contact used purchased a scanner which gave him a code for P0720(Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit). Upon investigation, the contact discovered that the vehicle was under recall for NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000(Power Train). The contact called two separate dealers where he was informed by both that the manufacturer had placed a pause on the recall remedy after they discovered that the software remedy did not repair the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 182,000.
I had recall 26S28 performed on my 2015 Ford F150. The intent of the recall is to prevent the transmission from unexpectedly shifting into second gear while at highway speed. Immediately after the recall service was performed, the transmission will fail to shift into low gear after coming to a stop before the vehicle is fully warmed up. Pulling away from a stop is very slow (transmission is in a high gear). This creates a traffic safety hazard if there is traffic approaching at an intersection or while merging into traffic. Other vehicles have to brake to avoid me. The servicing dealer has reproduced this problem, but Ford is unwilling to remedy it. There is an orange wrench symbol on the dashboard when this happens. The transmission performed normally under all conditions before this recall service was performed.
Vehicle had mechanical failure in the transmission at 70 mph. The PCM shifted my transmission in to 1st gear and locked up my rear tires at 70pm, which is covered under NHTSA 26V237000. Ford has an open recall: 26S28 for a software update, which is currently paused. They also have 26N04 to replace to failing lead frame within the transmission. Ford is refusing to repair the vehicle under 26N04 (hardware) while 26S28 (software) is paused, which are two separate issues. A software pause should NOT invalidate a physical component failure that is explicitly covered under an active safety mandate.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the transmission downshifted independently. The failure was persistent. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics, both of whom advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer was notified of the failure by phone and informed the contact that parts were unavailable. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train); however, the parts to complete the repair were unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 102,500.
2015 Ford F-150 Platinum, 6-speed automatic. Ford recall 26S28 (NHTSA campaign 26V-237, PCM software update for unintended transmission downshift) was performed at All Star Ford, [XXX]. BEFORE the recall service, this truck ran smoothly, quietly, and flawlessly. AFTER the PCM update, the transmission developed severe jerking and hard downshifting that never existed before the recall work. The dealership has held my vehicle since XXX. The mandatory post-update reset drive was skipped after the first update; the recall has since been re-performed twice and the malfunction persists - it was directly caused by the recall calibration. On XXX, the general manager stated the vehicle was "safe to drive" yet admitted he could not guarantee no further operational or safety issues would occur, and confirmed Ford engineers currently have no fix. I was also told Ford halted work because this recall update damaged my vehicle and thousands of others. I have been without my vehicle since May 2026. The recall remedy has rendered my vehicle unsafe to drive. I am filing so NHTSA is aware the 26S28 remedy is producing new transmission malfunctions. The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle downshifted from 4th gear to 2nd gear and the rear wheels locked up. The message “Service Vehicle Soon” was displayed and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an Auto Zone and DTC: P0720 was retrieved. A dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was informed that the DTC: P0705, P0706, P0707, and P1702 needed to be displayed for the vehicle to be repaired under Extended Warranty Program: 26N04. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (POWER TRAIN) as the possible cause for the failure. The failure mileage was 166,087.
I am writing to express my serious concern about a power steering failure in my 2015 F-150. Within the last few weeks, it began losing electronic power steering assist intermittently. The loss of assist happens suddenly, with no warning light or message on the dash. When it happens, the steering becomes extremely heavy and difficult to turn, and it can happen at any speed. The vehicle is very hard to steer without power assist, and becomes a serious risk to avoid an obstacle, hold my lane in a curve, or make a necessary maneuver in traffic. A sudden loss of steering control like this can easily lead to a serious accident, with the risk of injury or death to me, my passengers, and others on the road. Because of this I have already had a close call. The power steering went out while I was making a right turn at a traffic light on a major road. The truck drifted wide into the oncoming lanes, and I had to brake hard to avoid a collision. I pulled over and turned the truck off. When I started it again, the power steering seemed to work, and I was able to drive to the nearby Ford dealership to ask about the problem. Because I was about 30 miles from home, they advised that the best thing I could do was to get the truck back to my local dealer. When I brought my vehicle to my local dealer, the service department confirmed that recalls and bulletins exist. However, they told me that my truck's VIN does not fall within the affected range. This is the pattern I have seen every time: the power steering returns after the truck is restarted, but then goes out again at random, with not warning, and with no way for me to predict when. It is clearly not normal for a power steering system to fail on a vehicle with only 60,000 miles. A steering system is a critical safety component and should be expected to last well beyond this mileage. A failure this early points to a defect, not ordinary wear and tear,
While driving my 2015 Ford F-150, the vehicle experiences a severe and hazardous transmission defect. The transmission unexpectedly drops out of gear while in motion, resulting in an immediate loss of power and acceleration. Simultaneously, the 'D' (Drive) gear indicator light on the instrument cluster goes dark, and both the wrench warning light and check engine light illuminate, forcing the vehicle into an unsafe limp mode. This vehicle is subject to active safety Recall 26S28 / NHTSA 26V237 regarding unintended transmission downshifts and Transmission Range Sensor signal loss. I contacted an authorized Ford dealership to have this federally mandated safety recall performed. However, the service department explicitly refused to execute the recall repair, stating that the recall procedure does not solve the problem and makes it worse. The dealership is refusing to perform the required safety service, leaving my vehicle unrepaired and creating a dangerous ongoing safety hazard on public roads
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where a software update was performed under NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train); however, following the recall repair, the fuel economy was reduced and the transmission experienced intermittent hard shifting. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle needed a tune-up and spark plug replacements; however, the spark plugs had been recently replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 249,948.
The contact owns a 2015 Ford F-150. The contact received NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V237000 (Power Train). Ford Campbell sent a technician to the residence on August 9, 2026, to perform the update. While driving, the power train warning light was displayed. The technician arrived at the residence again to repair the vehicle. There was lag while driving, and the transmission unexpectedly downshifted. While driving 25 MPH, the power train warning light was displayed. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, Ted Russell Ford Kingston Pike (8551 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37919); and the vehicle was towed to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the software needed to be updated on several occasions. The contact was informed that the fuel pump, electrical system, and battery needed to be repaired. The dealer determined that the power control module needed to be replaced. The contact stated that installing and removing the software had caused the failure, and the technician was unable to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted by phone. The failure mileage was approximately 122,984.
The transmission control module recall was serviced and a diagnostic was paid for to ensure there was no outstanding issues with the transmission 300 miles later the transmission totally failed in forward gear and reverse. It will only go into park, no reverse and no forward gear, a complete electronic and mechanical failure 300 miles after a service! I CALLED Ford for assistance and they would only take a complaint. With no follow up.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
On March 21, 2025, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25002) to investigate instances of unexpected transmission downshifting without driver input in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford F-150 vehicles (subject vehicles) manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford). The complaints allege that, without warning or driver input, the subject vehicles experienced a sudden and rapid deceleration often accompanied by temporary rear wheel lockup, seizure, or skidding, resulting in a loss of vehicle control that increases the risk of crash and injury to all motorists, including those not within the subject vehicles. The MY 2015 and MY 2016 F-150 vehicles were equipped with the “6R80” transmission, while the MY 2017 vehicles were equipped with either the “6R80” transmission or the “10R80” transmission. This investigation was limited to MY 2015-2017 Ford F-150 with the “6R80” transmission. ODI identified 329 Vehicle Owners Questionnaires (VOQs) related to this investigation and sixty percent of these consumers were interviewed to confirm the details of their allegations. Consumers reported that their vehicles’ transmission suddenly downshifted to a lower gear, often to 1st or 2nd gear, without driver input or advance warning. Consumers described the downshift events to be regular and repeated occurrences, with some consumers stating that they no longer drive the vehicle due to safety concerns. Forty-three percent of consumers reported experiencing at least one wheel lockup event, during which the rear tires locked, screeched, or skidded during the transmission downshift. ODI also found that 114 of the 329 consumers reported having their vehicle’s molded lead frame or valve body assembly (which comes with a molded lead frame) replaced, 80 of which were confirmed through consumer submitted repair invoices. In its response to ODI’s Information Request, Ford provided an assessment of potential root cause of failure for the subject vehicles and how this failure is different from the failure associated with MY 2011-2014 Ford F-150 vehicles that was addressed by four safety recalls (16V-248, 19V-075, 19V-433, and 24V-444). Ford has identified that the defect in the recalled vehicle population involved lead frame supplier production issues resulting in signal loss from the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. Ford has identified that the alleged defect in the subject vehicle population involved degradation of electrical connections within the lead frame due to thermal cycling and vibration over extended time in service resulting in signal loss from the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS). Signal loss from the TRS can result in an unintended shift to neutral, unintended upshift, or unintended downshift which are regulated by a gear “shift map” based on the vehicle’s speed at the time of signal loss. According to Ford’s “shift map”, at speeds between 35-64 mph, the maximum allowable downshift would be to 2nd gear (i.e. a 6th to 2nd gear downshift event) which Ford has designated to represent the worst-case scenario for subject vehicles. Ford has also acknowledged that the worst-case scenario may also involve temporary wheel lockup. However, Ford has stated that the failure mechanism in the MY 2011-2014 F-150 vehicles—previously addressed through recalls—primarily involved OSS sensor signal loss that could result in 6th to 1st gear downshift events. This OSS-related failure mode is distinct from the TRS-related signal loss identified in the subject vehicle population. ODI has identified an additional potential safety defect associated with the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. Preliminary testing performed by NHTSA’s Vehicle Research Test Center (VRTC) showed that when the TRS experiences an intermittent signal loss, one possible outcome is a change in vehicle direction. Specifically, if a vehicle is operating in reverse up an incline when the TRS signal loss occurs, then the vehicle may shift into neutral causing the vehicle to change directions and roll forward. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to, among other things, perform component-level testing and vehicle testing, as well as review additional technical information to better understand the alleged defect that has been identified. To review the reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
On March 21, 2025, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Preliminary Evaluation (PE25002) to investigate instances of unexpected transmission downshifting without driver input in model year (MY) 2015-2017 Ford F-150 vehicles (subject vehicles) manufactured by Ford Motor Company (Ford). Based on NHTSA’s analysis of consumer data, information provided by Ford, and preliminary testing conducted by NHTSA’s VRTC, this Preliminary Evaluation is being upgraded to an Engineering Analysis (EA26001). During this Engineering Analysis, the agency plans to, among other things, perform component-level testing and vehicle testing, as well as review additional technical information to better understand the alleged defect that has been identified from this Preliminary Evaluation. On June 18, 2018, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE18-008) to investigate complaints alleging post-crash fires at the B pillar in the area of the seat belt pretensioners on MY 2014-2018 Ford F-150 Regular Cab, and Super Crew Cab Vehicles. On August 24, 2018, Ford Motor Company recalled (FSA 18S27 - NHTSA #18V568) the affected population. Ford's investigation found that some front seat belt pretensioners may generate sparks during deployment in excess of Ford's specification. Sparks in the pretensioner exhaust gases inside the lower portion of the B-pillar may subsequently ignite combustible components contained in the B-pillar, such as insulation or carpet, and may cause a subsequent vehicle fire. ODI also requested relevant information from other manufacturers to assess the potential scope of post-crash pretensioner fires. Ford will notify owners and require dealers to remove B-pillar insulation material and wiring harness tape, and install heat resistant tape, free of charge. The recall notification began September 28, 2018.Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.The VOQs associated with the closing of this investigation are: 11143035, 11130056, 11129828, 11128761, 11127993, 11127880, 11124717, 11123419, 11119651, 11119626, 11114065, 11113160, 11111822, 11097937, 11078447, 11014688
NHTSA opened AQ17-001 to determine whether Champion Ford Edinboro, Inc. (Champion Ford), of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, complied with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, 49 U.S.C. Chapter 301 (Safety Act) and its implementing regulations. The Safety Act requires, among other things, that a manufacturer notify its dealers of defects related to motor vehicle safety and non-compliances with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and, in turn, that a dealer not sell a new vehicle subject to a recall unless the recall remedy has been performed (49 U.S.C. ?30120(i)).NHTSA issued an information request (IR) letter to Champion Ford on January 4, 2017.Champion Ford responded to this request on January 19, 2017.Also on January 4, 2017, an IR letter was issued to Ford Motor Company (Ford) and a response was received from Ford on January 25, 2017.Finally, another IR was issued to Champion Ford on May 31, 2017, and Champion Ford's response letter was submitted to NHTSA on June 14, 2017.NHTSA's investigation indicated that Champion Ford did sell and deliver recalled vehicles that did not have the recall remedy completed at the time the vehicles were delivered to the customers.NHTSA therefore concluded that Champion Ford was liable for civil penalties for violations of the Safety Act, pursuant to 49 U.S.C. ?30165.Under a Settlement Agreement dated April 16, 2018, Champion Ford agreed to pay compromised civil penalties in the amount of $20,000.Champion Ford also represented in writing that it repaired all twenty-three (23) recalled vehicles identified in AQ17-001 and will strictly adhere to Ford's procedures requiring dealers to check for outstanding safety recalls prior to customer delivery.NHTSA's Recall Management Division has verified that all twenty-three (23) vehicles have been remedied of the safety recalls identified in AQ17-001.This Audit Query is closed.
On June 8, 2020, Ford Motor Company issued a safety recall (NHTSA Recall No. 20V-332) of 292,311 model year (MY) 2014-2017 Ford F-150 vehicles equipped with 3.5L Ecoboost engines and built from 9/1/2014 to 8/1/2016. Ford stated that the causes of brake fluid loss in the master cylinder are brake fluid contamination that can interfere with rear cup seal function, and rolling of the rearmost cup seal.Prior to total loss of the front brakes, depending on the amount of brake fluid loss in the master cylinder, the driver may receive an audible chime, message center alert and red brake warning indicator in the instrument cluster, and may experience a change in brake pedal travel and increased pedal effort. It should be noted that a small number of late-built MY 2014 and early-built MY 2017 F-150 vehicles are included in the recall along with the subject vehicles (MY 2015-2016).This Recall Query is closed based on the safety recall issued by Ford.
