Safety record from NHTSA: recalls, owner complaints, investigations and service bulletins.
These records cover every 1995 Nissan Quest. To see whether one car still needs a recall repair, decode its VIN or check it with NHTSA.
3 recalls name the 1995 Nissan Quest. Newest first.
Vehicle description: minivans. the fuel tank vent hose allows air to vent from the fuel tank during refueling. cracks have developed in the vent hose. if (1) the fuel tank IS overfilled, not allowing excess fuel in the vent hose to flow back into the tank, (2) the vehicle IS driven only a short distance after refueling and, (3) there IS subsequently…
Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Dealers will replace the vent hose.
The rear lamp socket may not illuminate because the metal can in the lamp socket moves or separates from the plastic socket housing.
This can result in malfunction of the stop or rear running lamps. center high mount stop lamp function IS unaffected. rear lamp malfunction can result in following drivers not being alerted to the subject vehicle's presence or intended actions, particularly in the case in which both lamps have malfunctioned.
Dealers will install a revised rear lamp socket and wiring assemblies.
An out-of-specification condition in the seat cable roller pulley assembly can allow the cable that connects the seat adjust lever to the latch to be pinched in the roller assembly.
Consequence of non-compliance: this condition can prevent the latch on the left side from fully engaging the seat rail. this does not comply with the requirement of fmvss no. 207, "seating systems."
Dealers will replace the puller assembly in the third row sliding bench seat latch assembly.
Brake caliper locks while driving because the shaft cylinder IS made of plastic which overheats and last for lesser than 3 months depending on driving habit. the brake pads lock in place slow the vehicle until the pads are completely worn out. Twice the brake material caught fire and demoblized the vehicle *tr
TL* the contact owns a 1995 nissan quest. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start. after having the starter and battery replaced, the contact took the vehicle to an authorized dealer and was informed that the fuel pump assembly would also to be replaced. The vehicle was not under recall. The failure mileage was 236,000 and the current mileage was 260,000.
Gasoline odor inside vehicle, went to local dealer with details of odi report 00v419001, the service adviser said no campaigns found for this vehicle. *Tr
(This IS my third complaint regarding the same issue. See earlier complaints (10208146 and 10208146) for additional details.) this IS the seventh (7TH) time the front-passenger-side lap belt retractor (mounted at the bottom of the door post / body frame) has jammed over the last several years or so. for the 6TH repair/replacement (and now the 7TH which IS pending arrival of yet another replacement part) I went to another dealership, busam nissan, 1501 east kemper road cincinnati, oh 45246 (513) 771-8100. the 6TH unit they installed lasted only about 2 weeks before jamming early this year. they then confirmed the failure and the dealerships service manager said they would get with the factory before simply putting in yet another warehouse-stocked "current-design" belt retractor that would likely have the same failure as all the others. after several months I checked in to ask what happened to the ordered part. they said the factory had yet to respond with a better/permanent solution. I said for now I'D rather go ahead and get another warehouse-stocked "current-design" one re-installed than continue to open-ended waiting with no working belt at all. and I'D keep coming back for repairs to get the factory's attention since it costs them each time a dealership gets reimbursed. at present I'm awaiting that warehouse-stocked "current-design" replacement unit to arrive. the service manager at busam nissan tentatively agreed with me that it might be that the lubricants have dried out, but that he could not "experiment" with it, such as gently warming up a unit in an oven to see if it would possibly help any internal lubricants re-distribute and allow the mechanism to properly release. he said that his or my doing so would end any free factory replacement possibilities and fixes. again, I doubt I'm the only one with this problem if this unit IS used in other nissan models as well. *tr
We have a 1995 nissan quest at 75,000 mileages that IS well maintained and runs very smoothly. we dropped off the car to apple nissan in york pa on 11/26 for a preventive maintenance (change of timing belt, water pump, thermostat, all driving belts) of its engine. after we paid $848 and drove it home, I found the coolant in the reservoir was totally empty so I added coolant on the following two days to maintain it at a proper level. on the third day (11/28) when I drove the car to work, its crankshaft broke and the whole engine was destroyed. the total driving distance IS less than 50 miles after the service. the nissan dealer blamed nissan inc. Had designed the crankshaft too small so the shaft IS easy to break and could be broken anytime like a tv and mine was not the only one, while nissan USA said the warranty was expired so it could not do anything about it. none of them would take any responsibility, whether the broken shaft was due to improper service or improper design by nissan. as a result, we became a victim who had to decide either paying additional $4,670+tax for the repair or letting the car ($4500 value before the service) towed to a junk yard. assuming a design fatigue life of a crankshaft IS 150,000 mile, the probability of the event occurs at 75,000 miles within 50 miles driving IS less than 0.1%. without the service, we might still drive the car smoothly. on the nissan USA side, they were aware that the crankshaft was too small so they increased the diameter in 1996 models. why didn't they warn the first owners so that I could have a choice to either trade in the car or let the car naturally die without spending additional money for new tires (3 weeks ago) and the engine service? the other faulty crankshaft cases can be found at http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ee93b52/1938 http://www1.epinions.com/auto-review-ccc-ad8a28c-396533d0-prod2. *tr
(This IS my second complaint lodged on this site regarding the same issue. see my earlier complaint for additional details on the possible causes.) this IS the fifth/5th time the front-passenger-side lap belt retractor (mounted at the bottom of the door post / body frame) has jammed over the last 5-6 years or so. The replaced part IS working for shorter and shorter periods before another failure. could this be due to aging of the stock of replacement parts? see nissan dealers records for exact dates: falhaber nissan, inc. 8680 colerain ave. Cincinnati (grosbeck), oh 45251 (513) 385-1400 (sales, service, body shop). it will not extend more than about 8-12 inches before the ratchet mechanism "catches" and prevents the seat belt from reaching over to the buckle by the center console. on the surface there seems to be nothing unusual about the installation -- the unit IS bolted in, and the belt simply feeds through a slot in the trim plastic. in frustration I discovered I was able to get it to extend a few times more by very rapidly snatching the belt until it would catch, I suppose simulating the deceleration of the vehicle during an accident (and the acceleration of the spring winding mechanism trying to restrain a "body" from flying through the windshield). then after retracting fully the belt would then extend fully for a one-time use, but only to seize up again after retracting. but this worked for only a very brief period (couple of days) then even that would not work. from my own experience I suspect this problem IS more prevalent than the few records on this web site would indicate. I suspect the engineers at the factory are not getting the feedback they need to correct the problem from the dealerships that (i presume) are reimbursed by nissan for repeatedly performing this free-to-the-consumer service. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1995 nissan quest. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. the failed crankshaft damaged the motor. the 23 mm crankshaft was replaced with a 25 mm crankshaft. the motor was replaced at a cost of $3,400. the current mileage IS 200,014 and failure mileage was 161,000. the consumer stated have a small claim hearing to attend in september and hope that the manufacturer to see should be responsible for repairs. The consumer provided numbers emails from the website pertaining to defect and court documents pertaining to this case. The consumer stated IS just asking for half of the repairs for the vehicle, however the manufacturer will only pay $1,000 due to the fact of the mileage on the vehicle. Updated 08/07/07 *tr
The nissan quest van had a structural failure of the crankshaft. I found that nissan began building motors with 23 mm crankshaft in 1993, but changed to 25 mm crankshaft in 1996 due to the lack of structural integrity of the smaller part. I had to replace the motor at a cost of $3400. I felt that since the original part was defective they should be held responsible for the cost of repairs. I have the defective part. *ak
TL* the contact owns a 1995 nissan quest. he was the original owner of the vehicle and there were 5 safety recalls on the vehicle. each of the safety recalls were related to the vehicle, and he never received any safety recall notice. there was never a change of address since purchasing the vehicle. The contact would like to have all of the safety recalls repaired, and an explanation from the manufacturer stating why he never received a notice. The current mileage was 72,792. *Ak
This IS the third time the front-passenger-side lap belt retractor (mounted at the bottom of the door post / body frame) has jammed over the last 3-4 years or so. see nissan dealers records for exact dates: falhaber nissan, inc. 8680 colerain ave. cincinnati (grosbeck), oh 45251 (513) 385-1400 (sales, service, body shop) it will not extend more than about 8 inches before the ratchet mechanism "catches" and prevents the belt from reaching over to the buckle by the center console. due to the frequency of failures, I wonder if I am simply getting recirculated used parts? the man in the parts department of my dealership says these are not stocked, has not noticed any "run" on this kind of item, old ones are destroyed, and they only install new ones. something not right. my driver's side and the middle and rear row seat retractors have never had a problem. my wife and others do nothing odd out of habit that I can tell as far as using that one belt. *jb
Fuel lines to fuel injectors deteriorate, leak raw gasoline onto motor, strong gas odor in passenger compartment. Very expensive to fix, very difficult to access for dyers - not covered in repair manuals 'how-to'. *Jb
Dt: the contact stated the nose of the crank shaft broke off the engine with out warning. This occurred while driving. The contact was able to stop the vehicle by pressing the brakes and putting vehicle in park. Because this happened less than a block from home the vehicle was pushed home. Upon inspection of the vehicle the contact's father discovered the crank shaft nose broke. No parts have been replaced or repaired at this time. *Ak
I am having to replace the right wheel cylinder in my 95 nissan quest for the 2ND time in less than 3 years. I was told that the first time I fixed it that it would be a long time before I would ever have to replace it again, well now it IS less than 3 yrs later and I am having to replace it again. There seems to be a problem and I would like some answers. *Jb
Dt: the contact owns a 1995 nissan quest. the contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in driveway it came out of gear and rolled into the neighbor's garage. the contact stated the vehicle was in park without the key in the ignition. the gear selector was still in park, but the transmission could have slipped to cause the vehicle to roll. the vehicle has not been inspected by the service dealer to determine the cause of the failure. but the consumer called the dealership. the manufacturer said that there was no recall on this problem and they would check into the matter.*ak
The crankshaft broke off due to a structural failure of the shaft. I spent the next 22 days trying to get nissan to replace the crank and repair the 1995 quest van. nissan began installing larger crankshafts in their 1996 models but they never offered to help with the repairs. I have a small claims court hearing oct 11 and would like to know of all the similar cases that have been filed to date. After 22 days I had the van repaired at my mechanics shop at the cost of $3371.00 I still have the crank. *nm
Shortly after purchasing vehilce gas smell was present, each time vehicle was taken in for complaint dealership was unable to denote gas smell. this vehicle was purchased may 1998. the recalled on the vehicle was in 1996. I am the second purchaser and was never notified of the recall. the vehicle started losing power and I was told that the timing chain was going out on the vehicle and it would be expense to repair. I was advise to replace when it when completely out. on november 2004 while driving alone the vehicle went completely out and had to tow to a garage. I was told that the crank shaft of the vehicle has dissentrated . I was told that nissan should repair it because it was a lifetime part and a factory recall on the vehicle in 1996. the nissan dealership was notified a advised me to bring the vehicle in and they would make the necessary repairs. they repaired the vent hose that had been iinstalled incorrectly and refused to repair the crank shaft problem. the estimate from nissian was $4000.00. I still owe $10,00.00 on this vehile.
I have a nissan 1995 quest. While I was driving to lake tahoe, ca, all of a sudden, the engine lost power, and I could not control the steeling wheel and break. The car almost fell off the cliff. I sent my van to an auto pepair shop right after I arrived in south lake tahoe, but the technician could not find anything wrong with my van, and I drove the van back without any problems. I heard my friend mentioned about this problem several years ago, but when I call nissan, they denied any compliants like this. Please investigate and get back to me. Thanks.
Brake lights fail on 1995 nissan quest
I own a 1995 nissan quest van the rear taillights continually fail do to a manufacturer defect in the bulb socket the socket was recalled previously but the fix does not work I talked to a dealer mechanic and he told me they could sell me new sockets for the taillights but they are no better then the ones installed during the past recall it IS extremely dangerous when the taillight go out without warning I have been nearly rear ended on 2 occasions .the sockets loosen up and the bulb then does not make contact I have tried to fix the problem my self and also tried to get the dealer to fix the problem please help before someone gets hurt!!!
Driving on interstate highway for approximately 2 hours at 70 mph, without warning, engine quit entirely. Had to weave in traffic to avoid other vehicles and coast to the median. after resting 15 minutes, engine would restart. traveled and additional 1-1/2 hours and same thing happened. after restart, traveled for an additional hour without incident. took vehicle to mechanic the next day and could not find a problem. this IS a dangerous situation to have the vehicle quit at high speeds on the highway. from reviewing other complaints on you web site, it IS apparent that this IS a common occurrence and the manufacturer needs to address this danger to the owners. *jb
Consumer's 4 1/2 year old son was able to shift vehicle out of gear, condition which caused vehicle to roll backward and hit the garage door. manufacturer was notified. Please provide any further information. *la
I bought a 1995 nissan quest van with 30,000 miles on it about 4 years ago(1999-2000). My complaint IS that every winter on very cold days, when we turn the heat on in the mornings you can smell a very bad raw gas smell. after the engine warms up it will usually go away but not always and sometimes when you come to a stop it will start again. I am talking about a very strong gas smell, not just a little bit. it IS enough that sometimes we have to get out of the vehicle it's so bad. Sometimes we roll the windows down, which IS not very comfortable seeing that it usually happens on the coldest days. I have taken it to a local nissan dealership 2 or 3 times and they have fixed all the recalls and bulletins put out by nissan on problems related to this. These never worked. I also took it to another auto repair shop 3 times to have it fixed. Nothing has worked to this point. This IS a little unsettling that the manufacturer of the vehicle cannot even find the problem and I can't keep pouring money into this vehicle and not seeing any results. Nor do I feel comfortable about my family riding around in this vehicle.*ak
While driving on the highway front side cornering lamp on the passenger side, that was located next to the headlights separated and flew off the vehicle. This occurred because the plastic piece on the back side of cornering lamp that held the lamp in place cracked. The screws were not loose.*ak
I bought this vehicle used, with approximately 106000 miles. The key comes out of the ignition without being in park. I can even take the key out of the ignition while the vehicle IS running or driving down the road. The first time I parked after purchasing the vehicle, I forgot to put it in park and came out of a store and the vehicle had rolled to the middle of the parking lot. Thankfully it hadn't hit another vehicle. When I put it in park, I have to be careful to make sure it IS in gear before I exit the vehicle. Keyless entry doesn't work if the car IS running.
Will start, run 5 minutes then die. the wiring to the radiator fan fuse box IS burnt. took it to nissan dealer who replaced the burnt wires, cost $75. they said the engine wiring needed replaced. I called a dealer near home and they said it would cost $3000 to fix this. this IS half of what the car IS worth. we have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, and ignition coil.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
Periodic exposure to liquid gasoline may result in extraction of antidegradants from the subject fuel tank vent hose.hoses which have suffered loss of antidegradant can develop cracks in areas of high strain.fuel may spray or drip from cracked vent hoses following tank fill.starting at JOB#1 1998 my (california emissions vehicles) and JOB#1 1999 my (federal emissions vehicles), the subject vent hose composition changed from nitrile rubber hoses with chloroprene rubber covers (nbr/cr) to fluoracbon rubber hoses which an outer layer blend of nbr/pvc.the changes wer made to improve hydracarbon resistance for complaince with new evaporative emissions regulations.the modified hoses are also significantly more resistant ot degradation and craciking. In a letter dated december 14, 2000, nissan notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall campaign to replace the subject vent hose in affectd vehicles with the redesigned hose.nissan will begin notifying owners of the affected vehicles on february 5, 2001.nissan will finish its owner mailings on september 10, 2001.owners will be notified in reverse order of vehicle age.
