When driving my 2009 Toyota Avalon my headlights sporadically go out. Mostly on the drivers side. I have replaced the headlight on 3 separate occasions with in the last 3 Years and each time it cost me $185.00 for labor and the headlight. I also got stopped by the POLICE for it! Now in 2023 the right head light goes on and off sporadically since March 2023. Again, I got stopped by the POLICE! Now it's JUNE of 2023 and both lights went out while driving home at night. We took it to a different repair shop and was FINALLY told that this has been a problem for the 2009 Toyota Avalon for a while as it was a manufacturing DEFECT. A head light ballast I think. Why should I pay to fix this as well as tickets from the POLICE for a manufacturing ERROR!!! Now I have to pay for 2 Ballasts and 2 headlights????.

Driver and passenger side headlights suddenly stopped working. , discovered that both light bulbs had shattered inside the head lamp housing. Dealer & toyota USA confirms that toyota has changed the headlight housing design that accomodates a different high beam bulb that will not shatter. Toyota refuses to replace the housing even though vehicle only has 60,000 miles on it. this IS a serious safety issue that needs to be elevated to recall status. Toyota used, a now expired, extended warranty to avoid this being a recall as it should be. how many affected vehicles have to lose day time running lights and high beams!

The telescopic steering column adjustment lever will not stay secure and comes loose frequently while driving allowing the steering column to collapse in or pull out. This IS a safety concern I reported to my toyota dealer (gilroy toyota - gilroy, ca) in july of 2019 when taking the car in to have the ac blower motor repaired and asking for a solution. After multiple calls I finally gave up. Now I'm back talking to the dealer regarding a recall on my 2018 highlander and asking them again about a fix for my steering column. They now inform me of a known issue with the telescopic lever detent clip and a technical service bulletin tsb-0147-13 and also that toyota had a warranty enhancement program - zty to address it which expired in september of 2019. The dealer now tells me they can not help since it has expired and gave me the number for toyota customer care 1-800-331-4331 but they refuse to help. This IS a safety issue but there has been no recall and I was never notified of the warranty enhancement program so I'm now stuck with an unsafe vehicle. I don't understand how this IS not a safety recall that toyota should continue to stand behind. do I have any recourse at all?

A power rear window sunshade IS an option that IS designed to be retractable. A push button switch below the dashboard IS supposed to toggle the perforated sunshade to the raised and retracted position. Once the sunshade IS raised normally, it cannot be retracted again. Any attempt to lower it results in a loud clicking noise as the shade tries to retract but cannot.. The problem IS exacerbated when backing up, since shifting the vehicle into reverse (r) should automatically retract the sunshade but cannot do so. My sunshade IS stuck in the raised position and cannot be lowered. Although I can see through the shade fairly well during daylight hours, vision IS obscured at night and presents a safety hazard. An online search revealed that many other avalon owners whose vehicles had this sunshade option had the exact same problem and struggled to find a solution. Many toyota dealerships seem to find the problem so difficult to solve that they must charge an exorbitant sum of money for a temporary repair that might not last very long. This IS an annoying problem that begs for a permanent and affordable solution!

In a june 21 "t- bone" collision in which I was hit by an SUV on the left side while driving on us 20 in western massachusetts, none of the side airbags deployed. This resulting in severe injury to my left rib cage (11 of 12 ribs either broken or cracked). The SUV had run a stop sign and was estimated to have been going 45-50 mph. The driver and passenger front airbags deployed, but not the side airbags that would have provided vital protection. I suspect that the sensors failed to trigger the airbag deployment.

Driving on an unlighted texas highway at night my hi-beam lights went out. When I checked them later , both sides the bulb had shattered. I was driving the speed limit of 70 at that time counting on those hi-beams to spot wildlife around the road area. After I lost the use of the high beams I had to lower my speed and the area which I could safely see had greatly decreased.

- 11007455Some 2005 2024 Toyota vehicles that have undergone water intrusion may exhibit a condition in which a musty odor is present. Follow the procedures in this bulletin to remediate the odor and address this condition. The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to provide general guidelines and procedures for odor remediation. This Service Bulletin provides a guide on how to prepare and treat the interior of the vehicle for odor remediation. Refer to the applicable model and model year Repair Manual and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) website for the most up-to-date safety and precautionary guidelines. This Service Bulletin is to provide a general overview and direction for the odor remediation process.
- 11007445The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. If these contaminants settle and remain on a painted vehicle surface, especially the horizonal areas of the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage can occur. This damage is the result of actual etching of the paint and appears as pitting or water spots. As acid rain droplets on the vehicle surface evaporate, the concentration strength of the acid increases, causing deeper and more rapid damage. This evaporation and corrosive action also occur more rapidly on dark colored cars as direct sun heat increases. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain (see Figure 1), frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.
- 11007444To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible.
- 11007443Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. If these acidic compounds settle on an exposed vehicle, especially the horizontal areas such as the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage to the painted surfaces can occur. Acid rain damage can typically be identified on vehicles by the presence of stains on the paint surface that resemble hard water spots. Unlike water spots however, acid rain damage cannot be removed by regular washing procedures. Also, because acid rain can etch and soften the paint, normal buffing or polishing repair procedures should not be attempted. This can cause further damage and result in visible depressions in the paint surface. The following are the three major categories of acid rain damage: Minor damage: requires only buffing to repair. Moderate damage: usually requires neutralizing, color sanding, and buffing. Severe damage: extending beyond 1/2 mil of clearcoat on a pearl, metallic, or solid color, requires neutralization, sanding, and repainting. In cases where acid rain damage is minor, neutralization and buffing with a liquid-type paint finessing product may provide an adequate repair. Only specially formulated products outlined in this bulletin should be used for that purpose. Unfortunately, other than minor damage, there is no simple method of determining the actual extent (depth) of acid penetration other than color sanding a representative affected area until there is no visible etching or depressions, followed by measuring the amount of paint removed with either a magnetic or digital-type film thickness gauge. The procedures in this bulletin are intended for use by qualified body/paint technicians and should not be attempted by inexperienced personnel. It is the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.

- 11005153Toyota vehicles are currently protected with RapgardTM protective film designed to protect the horizontal painted surfaces. This material protects from acid rain, environmental fallout, and rail contamination.
- 11005149Vehicles may occasionally be subjected to contamination by airborne iron particles shed from railroad tracks, train wheels, exposure to heavy machinery facilities, grinding, welding, etc. This type of contamination can be identified by the presence of small, red or brown particles on the paint surface. These particles are often difficult to see on dark color paints but can be easily felt when brushing a hand across horizontal body surfaces such as the hood, roof, or deck lid.

While the quality and durability of paint on Toyota vehicles is continuously being improved, it remains the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to the first sale. To read, While the quality and durability of paint on Toyota vehicles is continuously being improved, it remains the dealers responsibility to protect and maintain the quality of the vehicles paint finish after receipt at the dealership prior to first sale. Perform frequent vehicle washing, as often as daily, during high heat and humidity periods to minimize the potential for paint damage due to acid rain exposure. This is especially important in geographical areas known for high frequency and concentration of acid rain and industrial fallout.
- 11003594The condition known as acid rain is caused by airborne chemicals or particles in the atmosphere, which mix with rainwater, nighttime dew, or high humidity to form acidic compounds. While Toyota paint quality, durability, and resistance to environmental factors is continuously being improved, it remains the responsibility of the dealer to protect and maintain the vehicles paint finish from the time of arrival at the dealership until retail delivery to the customer. In areas known for high frequency and/or concentration of acid rain (see Figure 1), frequent vehicle washing during high heat or humidity periods will minimize the potential for paint damage caused by acid rain. It is further recommended that either reverse osmosis or deionized water be used to prevent water spotting.
- 11003592To prevent brake rotor rust from forming during transportation and storage, wheel film will be used instead of a cardboard type of anti-rust cover. The purpose of the wheel film is to shield the disc brake rotor from weather elements and initial rust before the vehicle is delivered to the customer. Consequently, the film should remain on the wheel for as long as possible. SUPERSESSION NOTICE The information contained in this bulletin supersedes Service Bulletin No. PD017-04. The entire bulletin has been updated.
- 11003589Acid rain results from rainwater or other airborne moisture that become acidic due to industrial chemical impurities in the atmosphere. If these acidic compounds settle on an exposed vehicle, especially the horizontal areas such as the hood, roof, and decklid, significant damage to the painted surfaces can occur.
