Coolant leak into the cylinders which has caused misfires & overheating. Vehicle no longer starts and has a complete engine failure. not even 75,000 miles have been put on the car.
The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of engine power, violent shaking on cold starts, and a low coolant warning light. A formal inspection has confirmed catastrophic internal coolant intrusion into the cylinders, requiring a complete engine long-block replacement. The official repair estimate from the shop is $9297.30 at 81,320 miles. This failure directly matches the manufacturing defect detailed in Ford TSB 19-2346 and is part of the open NHTSA investigation into 2015-2018 Ford Edge engine power loss. The threat of sudden engine failure while driving presents a severe highway safety hazard.
I have a 2018 Ford Edge with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. Currently the head gasket is cracked and coolant is constantly dripping out under hood. Im constantly running out of coolant and my engine light is on.
While driving our 2018 Ford Edge we noticed a sudden loss of power, hesitation, white smoke during operation and a loss of coolant. Vehicle idles poorly and sometimes dies when stopped at stop lights.
The 2018 Edge has been having Engine misfires for at least 3 months. Edge has had rough starts in the AMs - Check engine has gone on and off. Two main concerns is that the issue with the 2.0 Eco boost is the coolant intrusion into cylinders causing a whole engine replacement. Currently the 2018 Edge only has 65,723 Miles Ford has quoted the repair at a cost of 11k I was prompted to take vehicle in because when I was driving on the Highway at 65mph the engine gives gives you a message the car is going to overheat - so it will automatically reduce engine power to not crack the engine block but not great when you are travelling at a high rate of speed.
Check engine light appeared, heat stopped working, and received alerts for overheated coolant for 5 second intervals before it would disappear. Mechanic evaluation: Technician performed diagnostic inspection due to multiple engine fault codes, overheating, and engine misfire conditions. Upon inspection, technician found evidence of an internal cylinder head gasket failure allowing engine coolant to leak into the combustion chamber and cylinder wall area. Coolant intrusion into the affected cylinder is causing improper combustion, resulting in engine misfire, especially during initial start up. The internal coolant leak can also contribute to coolant loss, overheating, and internal engine damage.
"I am reporting a severe, known manufacturing defect involving internal coolant intrusion on my 2018 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost, which has caused total engine failure and rendered the vehicle entirely unsafe and completely inoperable. The vehicle began throwing codes P0300 (Random Misfire), P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire), and P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire) due to liquid coolant flooding the combustion chambers. The engine is now completely locked and will not start, stranding me at home with no transportation. This is a critical safety issue. Liquid coolant leaking into active engine cylinders poses an immediate risk of sudden engine stalling while driving, loss of motive power in traffic, and potential engine fire hazards. This failure matches Ford's own Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 22-2229), proving Ford has long-standing knowledge of this hazardous design defect. When I contacted Ford Motor Company corporate customer service for emergency assistance and towing to a dealership, Ford explicitly refused to assist me and instructed me to contact class-action plaintiff's attorneys instead. Ford is actively refusing to remedy a severe, known safety hazard for a stranded consumer. I request that NHTSA escalate its investigation into Ford EcoBoost coolant intrusion to force a mandatory safety recall before this defect causes a serious highway accident."
I have barely had my car now for 2 years and have had nothing but problems with it since the day I bought it it spends more time in the shop then any other vehicle I’ve owned! I’ve had to relaxed the coils 8 times now in the past year 5 of them in the past 5 months! The coolant continues to leak into the fuel system calling it an COOLANT INTRUSION which is causing havoc on my cold my engine my catalic converter to get extremely hot and causing my coils to burn and melt leaving me stranded alone on dark freeways costing me hundreds now thousands from having to have it towed to time in the shop parts and labour not to mention countless hours and days missed off work unable to get there or being late already lost one job and on the verge of losing another! The lady 2 coils that I had to replace weren’t lasting more than a week to a few days! I know there are countless complaints about this issue and major problem! WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN ANYTHING DONE ABOUT IT YET WHY ISN’T THIS BEEN RECALLED ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO GET KILLED BECAUSE THEIR STATUS ON FIRE AND BLOWS UP?? I’m ready to start Law suit this is not right nor ok! We trust these manufacturers to build safe reliable vehicles and if not then they need to replace or repair them! This is the only vehicle I have and I’m disabled and can’t just go out and buy a new car let alone continue to pay for repairs I shouldn’t ever have to pay for over and over again! Please help?! You want dates? I have several dates!
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at 5 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle began to overheat, with white smoke emitted from the front and rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where diagnosis revealed coolant leaking into cylinder three. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was 106,425.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while idling, a loud rattling sound was heard from the vehicle. The sound occurred for a month before the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a fractured flex plate. The dealer informed the contact that the issue was a known problem; however, the vehicle was not covered under warranty due to the age and mileage. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was losing coolant, but there was no leak found. The vehicle was towed to Meineke, where it was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to an unknown dealer, but no issue was found. There was coolant added to the coolant reservoir. The vehicle was placed on a pressure machine for 4 hours, and a small leak was found. The contact was informed that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The thermostat and cap were previously replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. There was smoke coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the dealer had not thoroughly checked the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 95,655.
Vehicle began a slight engine miss and acceleration hesitation occasionally. Over a year it began to be more often. I had the car in for maintenance several time to diagnose the problem but the engine light never came on there was no code. After another year it became worse and the engine light came. The mechanic says that a cylinder has water intrusion from the cooling system. The mechanic states that the vehicle needs a new engine. Research shows this is a common problem with this model engine. Ford has no fix currently for the engine. My mechanic says that a new engine is around $8,000-9,000.00.
I own a 2018 Ford Edge with a 2l Eco Boost motor. I bought it 3 months ago. The car now has 39,000 miles on it and the engine started bucking and cutting out as I drove down the rode. I took it to the dealer and they said it is coolant intrusion. They have to replace the engine at a cost of $10,000. After reaching out to Ford they refuse to cover or even help cover the cost. The defect is a well known design flaw and is well documented on the internet. I think they need to be forced to recall these motors before someone gets killed or injured from the cars erratic behavior. When it happens its like the car slams on its brakes for a moment and it scares the crap out of you. I just paid $21,000 for this vehicle. Carfax was clean, no mention of any issues whatsoever.
Coolant intrusion on the engine block a manufacturers problem which now leaked into the engine block and the vehicle has 50,618 miles and needs a total engine replacement. This is a 2018 and it has internal engine failure, there is a lawsuit but I need my car now to get to and from work.
My 2018 Ford Edge with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine has approximately 80,000 miles. The vehicle recently experienced a significant loss of engine coolant with no visible external leak found. The coolant level was extremely low when checked. While driving the vehicle, the engine began running very rough and the check-engine light started flashing, indicating a severe misfire. Because of the sudden change in engine operation and concern about possible engine damage or loss of power, I turned around and stopped driving the vehicle. It has not been driven normally since. The vehicle has not yet gone through Ford’s full diagnostic procedure for internal coolant intrusion. I am aware that Ford has issued TSB 19-2346 concerning coolant intrusion into the cylinders on certain 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles equipped with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. Based on the severe coolant loss with no visible external leak and the subsequent misfire/flashing check-engine light, I am concerned that my vehicle may be experiencing the same condition. The vehicle is available for inspection. A Ford dealership recently inspected the vehicle for a separate flexplate concern and advised that it was not exhibiting the cracked-flexplate issue. The coolant-loss and engine-misfire condition occurred afterward. I am reporting this because a sudden severe engine misfire, overheating, or loss of engine power while driving could create a safety risk, especially if it occurs at highway speeds or in traffic.
Engine rough idling, power compromised, check engine light on, determined coolant intrusion into engine which had to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford Edge. The contact stated that an independent mechanic became aware that coolant was leaking into cylinder #3. The check engine warning light was illuminated. Additionally, DTC: P0303 was displayed. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Action Number: DP26008 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was contacted by phone and made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 114,700.
Have water intrusion into engine which caused engine to overheat and started knocking as I was trying to get off hwy to safety from other hwy traffic. And ford knows about this issue and will not do nothing until if fails. Well I failed on me and put me in a unsafe zone when it did and now its out of warranty and ford wants to charge me thousands to repair thier flaw they know has issues and can put customers into danger areas when fails
Coolant intrusion, Ford service shop states it needs a new motor. This is a known issue and the vehicle is not over 100k miles. Driving on highway and loss of power, swapped spark plugs and ignition coil, check engine light turned back on a week later and engine overheated. White smoke and loss of coolant.
My 2018 Ford Edge Titanium (2.0L EcoBoost) is experiencing internal engine coolant intrusion - the defect described in Ford Technical Service Bulletin 22-2229 (June 10, 2022), which covers 2015-2018 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost vehicles for coolant leaking into the engine cylinders. The engine loses motive power without warning: it revs but the vehicle barely accelerates, including at road speed - a sudden loss-of-power hazard in traffic. Symptoms began approximately 09/08/2026. The check-engine light is illuminated with diagnostic codes P0300, P0302, P0303 (engine misfires, cylinders 2 and 3), P0316 (misfire on startup), P0217, P1285, P1299 (overheating - the computer has entered cylinder-head over-temperature protection mode), P0299 (turbo underboost), P0012 (cam timing), P0172 (rich condition), and P0420. This matches Ford's own bulletin identifying coolant intrusion into the cylinders, a condition the bulletin says may require complete engine (long-block) replacement. The selling dealer (JD Byrider) was formally notified on 09/29/2026 and I have requested cooling-system pressure testing and cylinder inspection. Exact current mileage is unknown - the vehicle is at the dealership.
Ref existing NHTSA DP26008 report Significant loss of engine power An "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning After the vehicle sits and cools, the engine can run roughly A cylinder-misfire check-engine light can appear. defect addressed by FORD TSB 19-2346/22-2229. The vehicle has only 78,000 miles and requires approximately $12,000 in engine replacement. Car is unsafe to drive due to intermittent engine stalling/lack of performance
At a routine oil change visit, Akins Ford found the engine coolant low and added coolant. That had not happened before. Later, while my daughter was driving the vehicle, the check engine light came on and an engine warning message appeared. The engine lost power and the vehicle could not be driven normally. A scan tool read DTC P0303, cylinder 3 misfire detected. The vehicle was towed to Akins Ford in Winder, Georgia. On XXX Akins opened repair order 955703 and diagnosed a cylinder number 3 misfire caused by coolant intrusion into the cylinder. The dealer performed a borescope inspection and confirmed coolant in the engine. The dealer said the engine long block has to be replaced and estimated the repair at $9,051.31. The vehicle had approximately 83,931 miles. It is still at the dealership and has not been repaired. Ford issued Technical Service Bulletin 19-2346 on XXX, titled "2.0L EcoBoost - Coolant In Cylinders, White Exhaust Smoke And/Or Illuminated MIL." It covers 2015-2018 Edge vehicles with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. It describes a low coolant level and a runs rough condition with DTCs including P0301 through P0304, states the cause may be coolant intrusion into the cylinder, and directs dealers to replace the long block engine assembly. My vehicle is within that range. My failure matches the bulletin on model year, engine, symptom and diagnostic code. I contacted Ford on XXX and asked for assistance. Ford denied assistance and said the vehicle was too old because it is more than six years old. The vehicle has under 100,000 miles. My Ford case number is [XXX]. I am reporting this as a safety problem because the engine lost power while my daughter was driving the vehicle. I understand NHTSA opened defect petition DP26008 on XXXcovering the 2.0L EcoBoost engine in 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. There was no crash, no fire and no injury. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The coolant start leaking into cylinder#1 and cause a check engine light on and problems with the idle and engine performance, my care has only 40k mileage on it and the warantty already passed on it. Its a big ford fail of design or production and i want them to handle that. We can't buy expensive cars and not trust a big company like ford. I can't handle the repair cost out of pocket and i want to file an official complain against ford to carry all the repair cost and get my car repaired and ready to drive in safely.
Coolant leaking directly into the engine’s combustion chambers. Mechanical failure, not a simple leak: coolant crosses from the cooling jacket into the cylinders themselves, fouling combustion instead of regulating temperature. The defect traces to the engine block and cylinder head design, combined with a head gasket seal, inadequate. The resulting symptoms as a sudden, significant loss of power paired with an “Engine Coolant Over Temperature” warning on the dashboard, often followed by rough running once the engine cools and a check-engine light tied to a cylinder misfire. Stopped at a green light to turn left. When the oncoming traffic cleared. Hit gas and it almost stalled. Addition traffic approaching me had to slow down to avoid hitting me.
Coolant intrusion into cylinder 3, diagnosed at two different shops. This is a known defect in the manufacturing of the engine block and Ford corporate refused to assist us in any way in fixing it. $9600+ repair quote on a car with 121000 miles! There is am active TSB, so they know all about it! This should not be allowed!!!
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation opened these reviews into vehicles including this one.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received a petition on August 5, 2026, requesting a defect investigation into the 2.0 Liter EcoBoost engine on model year 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles. The petition alleges that engine coolant intrusion results in a significant loss of engine power, accompanied by an "Engine Coolant Over Temperature" warning message. The petition further alleges that after the vehicle has sat and cooled down, the engine runs roughly and generates a check engine light for a cylinder misfire. This defect petition is being opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI number 11754989.
