By letter dated september 12, 2005, owners were instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected. owners who have had their speed control deactivated are being notified that parts will be available and advised to make an appointment to reconnect the speed control beginning in february 2006. owners who did not have their speed control deactivated are being notified to have their system remedied beginning in february 2006. owners are urged to avail themselves of the free disconnect service as soon as possible because of the significant risk of fire. Remedy
As an interim repair, owners will be instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected. as soon as replacement parts are available (early april 2005), owners will be instructed to return to the dealers for installation of a new switch free of charge. owners may contact ford at 1-800-392-3673. Certain pickup truck, van, and MINI van conversions equipped with southern comfort built running boards that contain certain courtesy lights manufactured by american technology components, inc. these units contain a courtesy light or lights that might overheat when the wire harness IS exposed to excessive moisture and road salt.

Certain 4X2 sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 120, "tire selection and rims for motor vehicles other than passenger cars." the rear tire pressure IS incorrectly listed on the label for 4.2 vehicles.

Customers may inflate their rear tires based on the incorrect tire pressure information on the certification label.
Remedy
A supplementary label will be sent to customers to place near the certification label to identify the appropriate rear tire pressure. the customer may also have the dealer install the label on the vehicle, if they so desire. owner notification IS expected to begin during september or october 2002. owners who do not receive the free label and installation instructions within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.

On XXX my 2000 Ford Expedition caught on fire at around 2am. It had not been driven or turned on since XXX, and was sitting parked that whole time. It was parked in the parking lot of my apartment building, right outside of my unit. I was woken up by a loud pop which I believe was the tire exploding, and the flames were tall enough to see outside my second story bedroom window. My entire apartment building was evacuated by the fire department, and some doors were kicked in by them, including mine. After they put the fire out, the fire inspector looked for two hours to determine a cause and were only able to determine that the fire started under the hood, on the drivers side, close to the dashboard area. The vehicle was completely totaled in the fire, and my other car parked next to it was damaged from the fire as well, and the apartment building had a lot of damage from the fire and heat spreading to it. Multiple residents were displaced for a few days at the advice of the fire department, to let units air out from the carcinogenic fumes. The vehicle has been towed and signed over to AutoMoto Salvage yard. I was researching what could have started this fire and found this article where the NHTSA investigated over 600 spontaneous Ford vehicle fires including year 2000 Ford Expeditions, caused by cruise control deactivation switches, which are located in the same place under the hood that the fire department determined my fire originated. [XXX] My vehicle was not listed in any recall, but that article states that over 200 vehicles that caught fire were not either. I'm unsure if the salvage yard still has it available for inspection. It has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer. It was inspected by the fire department and police department - insurance did not do their own inspection. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the contact became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to prevent oversteering. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the steering shaft. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred because the aftermarket replacement part was too short. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 315,000.

My truck has been running fine with new parts on it. I went to my friend's house went in to switch my laundry, looked out her window and my was on fire!! Truck off and keys were not in ignition and it was parked in a driveway under a carport. it posed no problems on the way over there, no smells, no sounds, no nothing. And then bam! Hood shooting out flames.

I was able to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and a water hose, but the plastic parts were were melted on the driver side. When I came out of aldis also on pendleton pike the car wouldn't come out of park without key being in acc position foot on brake and playing with gearshit for approx 15 mins it was locked. Then the power windows also went out in the same time that this all happened. Now my car will not go into gear without messing with gearshift for several minutes and messing with ignition switch mutiple times before I can get car into motion.

Throttle feels like its sticking. The breaks feel like they get harder the longer you drive or use them. Its been extremely cold the last few weeks (air temp of -28F lows to -3F for highs). You let off the break from a stop sign or stop light and it will suddenly accerlerate by itself. Seems to happen anytime after 40mph, even if you slow back down to 10-15mph it will accelerate back up on its own, up to as fast as 65mph!) I need to downshift and ride brakes (which are hard as a rock!!!) to keep it from excelling though town and to try to keep the rpms at bay. when coming to a stop and turning its hard to steer and it makes jumpy/jerky movements forward when brakes are applied. when vehicle comes to a stop the rpms skyrocket until you shut down the engine. if you havn't given it enough time before you start it again, the engine and rpms soar up again. Things we've tried with no luck are, disengaging the cruise control, replacing the spring under hood where the throttle cable IS. Thought maybe it was stretched and not depressing fully to alow deceleration. After that we replaced the throttle body itself. Again, no luck on test drive. You can hear a click/ping in the pedal and see it come up once truck IS in park, give it time. Pedal seems to be partially depressed and there IS play. Have tried to stick foot under the pedal to try and get it to disenge. Worked the first few times that's also why thought it was the spring. No longer works to do that. Can seem to hear a difference either in motor or trany, acting as if it's working harder when it seems to take control of itself. Started happening 12-24-17. been to the shop many times with no answers as to why this IS happening. it's very scary and dangerous! After reading about all the others this IS happened to its hard to imagine that there hasn't been a recall or at the very least an answer yet!

I have owned a 2000 ford expedition for approx. 3 yrs. And on nov. 22, 2017 while my vehicle was sitting in the parking lot at my work(approx. 3HRS) it decided to light itself on fire! I later found out that there had been a recall on the speed control deactivation switch. I have never been notified of this recall and am extremely angry as I have put over $10,000 worth of upgrades to the vehicle. Had I been notified of this recall I would have taken care of it immediately. The recall number IS 05v017000 and ford recall number IS 05s28. I have contacted ford about this and have not had any response. Before I contact an attorney I would like to know if there IS anything the nhtsa can do to help? Thank you for your time.

The vehicle was parked in a store parking lot, not running/ignition off, and it caught fire under the hood near the brake master cylinder. The fire damaged everything in the upper portion of the engine compartment, the hood, the cowling and the grill. Probably not repairable.

#7 spark plug blew out destroying the coil on plug with it. All the threads are stripped out and theres no way to put a new plug in it. Was lucky I didn't have an engine fire from fuel venting out of spark plug hole. This IS a triton 5.4L V8

Consumers alleged that when it rained or snowed, water leaked into the vehicle around the windshield.moisture flowing through the seal that surrounds the front windshield follows a path through the seal into the generic electronic module (gem) and fuse box, and may cause the electrical components in the vehicle to malfunction.overall, the number of reports alleging wiper failures and lighting failures IS relatively small.in reviewing a large sample of the 1503 complaints for windshield leaks, odi's analysis reveals that 0.04% of the total vehicle population reported improper windshield wiper operation and 0.01% of the total vehicle populationreported lighting failures.the warranty claims reveal that approximately 0.10% of the population has been serviced for wiper malfunctions and 0.08% for lighting malfunctions as a result of windshield leaking. Odi's analysis of the field performance statistics and available technical information has not established that a defect trend exists in the malfunction, failure or intermittent operation of the front windshield wipers or headlights.see the attached summary report.

On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton V-8 and V-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi IS not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi IS aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi?s analysis showed, it IS possible for a spark plug to detach from the engine cylinder threads in the subject vehicles.however, odi?s analysis of 474 complaints describing such incidents found only a very few alleged any safety-related consequences.none of these showed any evidence of a serious safety consequence.given the large population and relatively long exposure time of the subject vehicles, the complaint analysis indicates that the risk to motor vehicle safety from the alleged defect IS very low.in view of the foregoing, it IS unlikely that nhtsa would issue an order for the notification and remedy of the alleged defect at the conclusion of the investigation requested in the petition.therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsa?s limited resources to best accomplish the agency?s safety mission, the petition IS denied.

To 150 ft-lb., respectively.odi has received three reports of wheels separating from 2000 model year expedition vehicles, including two crashes.two additional reports allege broken studs and/or loose wheel nuts.loose wheel nuts can allow the wheel to wobble and cause wheel stud breakage.there are no similar odi reports on 2000 model year lincoln navigator vehicles.the failures appear to be attributed to improper wheel nut torque; however, there IS no evidence that there are torque quality deficiencies at the assembly plants.due to the mileages the incidents occurred, it IS most likely that improper wheel nut torques were applied during servicing, because in all cases when loose wheels were re-torqued to a least 100 ft-lb., there were no failure re-occurrences.
